Unlike either its predecessor Alone in the Universe or 2001’s Zoom, From out of Nowhere didn’t appear after a prolonged period of silence from Jeff Lynne’s ELO. It arrived in November of 2019, nearly exactly four years after Alone in the Universe, a rapid turnaround that recalls Lynne’s work schedule as a bandleader and producer in the 1970s and ’80s. That’s not the only way From out of Nowhere conjures memories of the past. From the spaceship hovering on its record cover to the song title “Sci-Fi Woman” stirring up the ghost of “Evil Woman,” the album is designed to sound and feel like an Electric Light Orchestra album from the late 1970s. That was true of Alone in the Universe too, but From out of Nowhere makes that album seem fresher in retrospect. Here, there is no clever embrace of digital technology or even nods to disco: it’s all immaculate orchestrated pop punctuated with some old-time rock & roll. Listen not too closely and it may be possible to mistake these tunes for outtakes from A New World Record or Out of the Blue, since they have a similar pomp lushness. Listen a bit closer and the seams emerge. As elegant as they are, the melodies don’t easily lodge in the subconscious, but the bigger problem is that the production — by Lynne, who plays virtually every note on the record — is airless and precise. This dryness is a remnant of the digital age, where every element in a recording is exactly in the right place, and if it’s not quite a drawback, it does mean From out of Nowhere can be a bit of an uncanny valley: it’s close enough to a genuine item to satisfy, yet different enough to disarm. ― Allmusic

Continuing his extraordinary SACD series of Richard Wagner’s music dramas for PentaTone, Marek Janowski presents Tannhäuser in the original Dresden version, with a dynamic cast, choir, and orchestra that give the performance their all. Like the previous recordings in this project, issued in celebration of the bicentennial of Wagner’s birth, the performance is live and the sound quality is exceptional in capturing both the exciting playing of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and the dramatic power of the singers onstage. The standouts are Robert Dean Smith as Tannhäuser, Marina Prudenskaja as Venus, and the exceptional Nina Stemme as Elisabeth, leading a cast that is strong and evenly matched to the roles. The mutichannel format fairly accurately re-creates their movements and positions, so there’s little confusion about the direction of the vocals or trailing off. (The voice of the Shepherd, sung beautifully by Bianca Reim, is remote by design but perfectly audible.) The choir is rich and vibrant, particularly in the Pilgrims Chorus, and the Berlin orchestra has great presence and burnished sonorities; many listeners will prize this recording for its playing, perhaps even more than for the singing. Taken as a whole, this is a highly desirable recording of Tannhäuser that Wagner buffs should consider adding to their collections. Highly recommended. ― Allmusic

1983’s Airborne by Eagles guitarist Don Felder is truly style over substance. For a member of such a phenomenally successful and visible group to release something so nondescript is really food for thought. Felder produced this effort, and he has friends galore pack the proceedings with lots of musicianship, the late Carlos Vega is on drums, as are Joe Vitale, Russ Kunkel, and Tris Imboden; fellow latter-day Eagle Timothy B. Schmit provides backing vocals, and there are appearances by Jeff Lorber , Joe Lala, Kenny Loggins, Dave Mason, and Albhy Galuten, but those talents aren’t enough to pull this one out of the bargain bins. With a mega-producer like Galuten contributing, one would think it prudent to invite him onboard to co-produce: His magic is part of what is missing here. The record sounds like “The Heat Is On,” Glenn Frey’s very ’80s-sounding 1984 hit from Beverly Hills Cop, and years later that sound does not hold these songs up to the test of time. For the guy who co-wrote only one major Eagles title of note, “Hotel California,” this album of Felder originals just goes right through the listener. Kenny Loggins co-writes “Never Surrender” with the guitarist, but it just isn’t enough, melodies like the ones on “Who Tonight” show little creativity, and the transparent production gives those black-and-white numbers very little sparkle. “Who Tonight” has some of the feel of Danny Kirwan and Bob Welch’s post-Fleetwood Mac solo work, and had they guest starred on lead vocals, it would have made a world of difference. Also, some outside material or even a long instrumental version of “Hotel California” would have given this collection something to hold onto. “Never Surrender” could be “Life in the Fast Lane” redux with none of its memorable qualities. As a vocalist, he doesn’t have dynamic range and seems to emulate Joe Walsh without the charm. The vocals on “Winners” are downright annoying, while “Haywire”‘s decent hook gets lost in the translation; it might have been a better track for another artist. Airborne plays like an album that was given to the artist out of respect for his work in the trenches rather than because he had something worthwhile to say. ― Allmusic

Three CD collection. Although vintage British psychedelia is viewed by many these days as an Alice In Wonderland-style enchanted garden full of beatific flower children innocently gathering flowers or chasing butterflies, there was always a more visceral element to the scene. Pointedly free of such fripperies as scarlet tunic-wearing gnomes, phenomenal cats and talismanic bicycles, the power trio format that was popularized by the likes of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience spawned a host of imitators. As the 60s drew to a close and pop evolved slowly but inexorably into rock, psychedelia gave way to a sound that was harder, leaner, heavier, louder. Across three discs and four hours of music, I’m A Freak, Baby: A Journey Through The British Heavy Psych And Hard Rock Underground Scene 1968-72 investigates that largely under-documented period, incorporating everything from some of the biggest names in the burgeoning hard rock/proto-metal firmament (Deep Purple, Uriah Heep) all the way down to a significant number of provincial semi-pro bands who gigged extensively but were unable to land a recording contract during their lifetime. We feature some of British rock’s pioneering acts (The Yardbirds, The Move), a handful of bands who travelled far beyond their blues boom roots (Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, The Groundhogs), the infamous Ladbroke Grove scene (The Deviants, The Pink Fairies, Hawkwind, The Edgar Broughton Band), a smattering of inspired, where-the-hell-did-that-come-from one-shots like The Velvet Frogs and the mighty Egor, and a clutch of previously-unreleased recordings (The Kult, Hellmet, The Phoenix) that have even eluded the specialist reissue companies and bootleggers. Electronic pop singer/songwriter Dido burst onto the international mainstream at the close of the ’90s, issuing two of the U.K.’s best-selling albums of all time. Her debut, 1999’s No Angel, topped charts around the globe and sold over 20 million copies. The follow-up, 2003’s Life for Rent, performed just as well, bolstered by her comforting blend of electronic production and pastoral heart, which was heard on singles such as “White Flag,” her highest-charting and best-selling to date. Though separated by extended stretches of silence, each subsequent release enriched her catalog and helped her become one of the most beloved English artists of the early 21st century.

Born Dido Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O’Malley Armstrong in Kensington, she entered London’s Guildhall School of Music at age six; by the time she reached her teens, the budding musician had already mastered piano, violin, and recorder. After touring with a British classical ensemble, she accepted a publishing job. Meanwhile, she sang with a series of local groups before joining the trip-hop outfit Faithless — helmed by her older brother, the noted DJ and producer Rollo — in 1995. The group released its debut album, Reverence, the following year. The super deluxe edition of the 1969 album consists of two CDs, a blu-ray audio, a 2LP vinyl set and a bonus seven-inch single. Like with last year’s Music From Big Pink reissue, Bob Clearmountain has created a new stereo mix of The Band album and this features on the box is various places including the first CD and the 2LP vinyl.

The first disc also features six previously unreleased bonus tracks, while the seven studio bonus tracks previously issued in 2000 are also included on the second CD after a Live at Woodstock performance.

The blu-ray audio includes a 5.1 surround sound mix and a hi-res stereo mix of the album (the latter is presumably the new stereo mix). In addition the six bonus tracks from the first CD are also included and mixed to 5.1.

The box concludes with a 2LP black vinyl pressing of The Band, along with a seven-inch single that features ‘Rag Mama Rag’ b/w ‘The Unfaithful Servant’.

Henry Mancini was easily one of the greatest composers for film soundtracks, so putting together a collection of 17 songs nominated for various awards (Grammy, Golden Globe, or Academy Awards) was easy. But finding the proper mix of musicians was important. His daughter, Monica Mancini, is a talented singer in her own right, so she was an obvious choice. And it was only natural to invite tenor saxophonist Plas Johnson to reprise his most famous solo in “The Pink Panther Theme,” which he recorded with Mancini for the original soundtrack. For the most part, Mancini’s arrangements are utilized, but there are some twists. Stevie Wonder is featured on harmonica with the vocal group Take 6 in the pretty ballad “Moon River,” while organist Joey DeFrancesco shines in the breezy “Mr. Lucky.” But it is Monica Mancini who makes the biggest impression (along with her father’s music, of course). Her sensual rendition of “Moment to Moment,” and her lightly swinging duet with singer Kenny Rankin of “Dreamsville,” both of which are complemented by Tom Scott’s superb alto sax, make it apparent that she inherited her father’s musical genes. Among the several arrangements contributed by Patrick Williams, his gorgeous chart for Monica of “Dear Heart” features the singer backed mostly by George Doering’s sensitive acoustic guitar. As Donald Fagen of Steely Dan puts it in his brief note to the CD: “All bow before the High Priest of Hollywood Cool!” In other words, fans of Henry Mancini should snap up this rewarding CD right away. ― Allmusic

In January 2019, the Who confirmed that they were working on their first album of new material in 13 years (since their 2006 studio album of original material Endless Wire), due to contain “dark ballads, heavy rock stuff, experimental electronica, sampled stuff and Who-ish tunes that began with a guitar that goes yanga-dang”, as Townshend stated. Vocalist Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend recorded their parts of the album separately.

“Ball and Chain”, the first song released from the album (in September 2019), is a re-recording of a Pete Townshend solo song called “Guantanamo”, which was released on his 2015 compilation Truancy: The Very Best of Pete Townshend. A second song, “All This Music Must Fade” was released as a single on 3 October 2019 and a third, “I Don’t Wanna Get Wise” received a release on Spotify and iTunes in November 2019

The album was supported by the final leg of the band’s 2019 Moving On! Tour and will again be supported by their upcoming 2020 tour of the UK and Ireland.

Best known for his stint fronting art pop hitmakers Supertramp, Roger Hodgson was born in Portsmouth, England, on March 21, 1950. While growing up in Oxford, Hodgson started playing guitar before he was a teenager, and was soon writing songs while at boarding school. He began recording during the late ’60s, issuing a single in 1969 as part of the session band Argosy with Elton John (then known as Reg Dwight).

Also in 1969, he co-founded Supertramp, serving with Rick Davies as songwriter and vocalist for 14 years. Originally funded by Dutch millionaire Stanley August Mieseages, the group lost his patronage after their first two albums failed to generate much interest. However, 1974’s Crime of the Century was a major hit, launching the radio favorites “Dreamer” and “Bloody Well Right.” After scoring an international hit in 1977 with “Give a Little Bit” from the album Even in the Quietest Moments…, Supertramp reached their commercial peak with 1979’s chart-topping Breakfast in America, which yielded the smashes “Take the Long Way Home,” “The Logical Song,” and “Goodbye, Stranger” on its way to selling 20 million copies. ― Allmusic
