Axis: Bold as Love is the second studio album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Track Records first released it in the United Kingdom in December 1967, only seven months after the release of their highly successful debut, Are You Experienced. In the United States, Reprise Records delayed the release until the following month. The album reached the top ten in the album charts in both countries.

For the album, the group displayed several musical styles and critics saw it as demonstrating Jimi Hendrix’s growth as a songwriter. The album introduced “Spanish Castle Magic” and “Little Wing”, two Hendrix compositions which draw on his roots performing with rhythm and blues bands, that would remain in his live repertoire throughout his career.

As the lead singer of the Doobie Brothers from 1975-1980, Michael McDonald’s soulful voice and skilled writing gave the group classics like “Minute by Minute,” “Real Love,” and the perfect “What a Fool Believes.” After the group’s 1980 album One Step Closer displayed a tension that was almost audible, it was no surprise that a split was in the works. 1982’s If That’s What It Takes is McDonald’s first solo effort, and was recorded at the great recording studios like Warner Bros. and Sunset Sound and was co-produced by Ted Templeman and Lenny Waronker. The album’s biggest hit, the moody and sleek “I Keep Forgettin’,” continues McDonald’s unflinching look at heartbreak, and it is more R&B-influenced than the previous Doobie Brothers work. The buoyant “I Gotta Try,” co-written by Kenny Loggins, perfectly captures the early-’80s L.A. pop sound. While McDonald’s pop acumen is no surprise, If That’s What It Takes also offers McDonald the chance to do ballads. The poignant and spare “I Can Let Go Now” has some of his best lyrics. “Losin End,” which first appeared on 1976’s Takin’ It to the Streets, gets recast as an even bleaker rumination with a suitably sorrowful solo from Tom Scott. The melodically complex “Believe in It” has McDonald doing some great, offhanded gospel-tinged vocals. This debut juggles tracks of merit and those of less distinction, but the bright spots make this essential. ― Allmusic

The Grateful Dead made their reputation on the road with their live shows, and they always struggled to capture that magic in the studio. From the Mars Hotel, while not a classic, represents one of their better studio albums. Jerry Garcia sounds engaged throughout and takes the vocal reigns for most of the songs on the album — although he’s not the most gifted vocalist, he proves himself able and versatile. He sings the rollicking opener, “U.S. Blues,” with a tongue-in-cheek seriousness that gives the political song an edge, and he lends emotional sincerity to the atmospheric ballad “China Doll.” Garcia shines on guitar during the funk workout “Scarlet Begonias,” but the ensemble work is best displayed on the album’s centerpiece, “Unbroken Chain.” During this song, all the musicians are allowed to shine: Phil Lesh, the bassist and songwriter, provides tender vocals over a piano-based arrangement while the bridge allows the guitars and drums to stretch out in classic Grateful Dead style. This album is highly recommended ― Allmusic

In 1987, John Hiatt, clean and sober and looking for an American record deal, was asked by an A&R man at a British label to name his dream band. After a little thought, Hiatt replied that if he had his druthers, he’d cut a record with Ry Cooder on guitar, Nick Lowe on bass, and Jim Keltner on drums. To Hiatt’s surprise, he discovered all three were willing to work on his next album; Hiatt and his dream band went into an L.A. studio and knocked off Bring the Family in a mere four days, and the result was the best album of Hiatt’s career. The musicians certainly make a difference here, generating a lean, smoky groove that’s soulful and satisfying (Ry Cooder’s guitar work is especially impressive, leaving no doubt of his singular gifts without ever overstepping its boundaries), but the real triumph here is Hiatt’s songwriting. Bring the Family was recorded after a period of great personal turmoil for him, and for the most part the archly witty phrasemaker of his earlier albums was replaced by an wiser and more cautious writer who had a great deal to say about where life and love can take you. Hiatt had never written anything as nakedly confessional as “Tip of My Tongue” or “Learning How to Love You” before, and even straight-ahead R&B-style rockers like “Memphis in the Meantime” and “Thing Called Love” possessed a weight and resonance he never managed before. But Bring the Family isn’t an album about tragedy, it’s about responsibility and belatedly growing up, and it’s appropriate that it was a band of seasoned veterans with their own stories to tell about life who helped Hiatt bring it across; it’s a rich and satisfying slice of grown-up rock & roll. ― Allmusic

With the 1974 disintegration of the original Alice Cooper group, Alice was free to launch a solo career. He wisely decided to re-enlist the services of Bob Ezrin for his solo debut, Welcome to My Nightmare, which was a concept album tied into the story line of the highly theatrical concert tour he launched soon after the album’s release. While the music lost most of the gritty edge of the original AC lineup, Welcome to My Nightmare remains Alice’s best solo effort — while some tracks stray from his expected hard rock direction, there’s plenty of fist-pumping rock to go around. The disco-flavored, album-opening title track would be reworked on the stage as more of a hard rock tune, while “Some Folks” dips into cabaret territory, and “Only Women Bleed” is a sensitive ballad that became a Top Ten hit. But the rockers serve as the album’s foundation — “Devil’s Food,” “The Black Widow,” “Department of Youth,” and “Cold Ethyl” are all standouts, as is the more tranquil yet eerie epic “Steven.” Despite this promising start to Cooper’s solo career, the majority of his subsequent releases were often not as focused and were of varying quality. ― Allmusic

Junior Wells’ penchant for clowning around sometimes conflicts with his craftsmanship, but he’s all business on Come on in This House, his most unadulterated blues record since his highly acclaimed Hoodoo Man Blues of more than 30 years vintage. This is what has come to be known as an “unplugged” session — that is, predominately, although not exclusively, acoustic instrumentation. Producer John Snyder’s concept was threefold: to team Wells with some of the era’s top younger traditional blues guitarists — Corey Harris, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Sonny Landreth, Bob Margolin, and John Mooney; to have those musicians, in various combinations, accompany Wells on a variety of slide guitars; and to concentrate on vintage Chicago and Delta blues from the repertoires of Rice Miller, Little Walter, Tampa Red, Arthur Crudup, and Wells himself. The result is a virtual slide-guitar mini-fest and a demonstration of the timeless appeal of classic blues done well. Wells’ vocals are deep and manly; his harp playing is high-pitched, like a child’s pleading. A surprising highlight is the only contemporary tune on the disc, Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason.” New Orleans drummer Herman Ernest III, who appears on 11 of the 14 cuts, does a masterful job laying down understated rhythmic grooves. ― Allmusic

Hoodoo Man Blues is one of the truly classic blues albums of the 1960s, and one of the first to fully document, in the superior acoustics of a recording studio, the smoky ambience of a night at a West Side nightspot. Junior Wells just set up with his usual cohorts — guitarist Buddy Guy, bassist Jack Myers, and drummer Billy Warren — and proceeded to blow up a storm, bringing an immediacy to “Snatch It Back and Hold It,” “You Don’t Love Me, Baby,” “Chitlins con Carne,” and the rest of the tracks that is absolutely mesmerizing. Widely regarded as one of Wells’ finest achievements, it also became Delmark’s best-selling release of all time. Producer Bob Koester vividly captures the type of grit that Wells brought to the stage. When Wells and his colleagues dig into “Good Morning, Schoolgirl,” “Yonder Wall,” or “We’re Ready,” they sound raw, gutsy, and uninhibited. And while Guy leaves the singing to Wells, he really shines on guitar. Guy, it should be noted, was listed as “Friendly Chap” on Delmark’s original LP version of Hoodoo Man Blues; Delmark thought Guy was under contract to Chess, so they gave him a pseudonym. But by the early ’70s, Guy’s real name was being listed on pressings. This is essential listening for lovers of electric Chicago blues. ― Allmusic

Pop culture, comedic satire, and rock music have always made for strange bedfellows. With all due respect to the collective genius involved in the Spinal Tap saga, it is safe to say no other artists have been able to repeat or re-create the delicate balance exhibited in the Rutles’ multimedia parody. This venture included a made-for-television mockumentary titled All You Need Is Cash. On this 1990 CD release, the contents of the original 1978 soundtrack — which incidentally bore the same name as the show — are included, as are an additional half-dozen recordings made for the film, but ultimately became victims of the time limitations inherent in the vinyl medium. The Rutles began with Monty Python’s Flying Circus member Eric Idle. His initial flash on the concept was as a short-lived BBC series, titled Rutland Weekend Television. Joining Idle on a regular basis was former Bonzo Dog Band member Neil Innes — whose seemingly innate musical abilities would also adorn latter-era Monty Python performances. According to Idle, “His [Innes] contributions [to the program] were Beatley,” thus inspiring the concept of a full-blown Beatles spoof. After previewing a demo reel to Lorne Michaels — producer of Saturday Night Live — Idle was convinced to develop the idea for NBC TV. The Rutles are: Ron Nasty, who is played by Innes (guitar/keyboards/vocals) and is the John Lennon character; Barry Wom (aka Barrington Womble) is portrayed by John Halsey (percussion/vocals), who presents a dead-on caricature of the deadpan Ringo Starr; Stig O’ Hara is depicted by Rikki Fataar (guitar/bass/vocals/sitar/tabla), who flawlessly emulates George Harrison; and Idle — the only non-musician — who spoofs Paul McCartney as Dirk McQuickly. The soundtrack takes on a whole other existence as each and every composition is deeply and sincerely ingrained in the Beatles’ music. Because of the practically sacred nature Beatles music shares in almost every life it graces, Innes penned and produced spoofs that were so eerily similar in structure they could easily be mistaken for previously unearthed tracks from the real fab four. There are obvious put-ons such as “Ouch!” and “Help!” or “Doubleback Alley” and “Penny Lane.” However, the real beauty inherent in many of these tunes comes via the subtle innuendos. These ultimately involve multiple listenings in order to locate the origins of a particular guitar riff, vocal inflection, or possible lyrical spoof. The best of these include “Hold My Hand,” which references “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” in title, and “All My Lovin” in song structure. “Piggy in the Middle” is a sly reworking of “I Am the Walrus,” and “It’s Looking Good” could be considered a variation of the Rubber Soul cut “I’m Looking Through You” right down to the repeated lyrics at the song’s coda. The band reunited (minus Idle) in the mid-’90s for a few one-off gigs, and in 1996 Archaeology — a send-up of the Beatles’ six-disc Anthology — was released to critical acclaim. Additionally, a various-artist album titled Rutles Highway Revisited — which featured an all-star cast including: Syd Straw, Tuli Kupferberg, Bongwater, Shonen Knife, and Galaxie 500 — recorded their favorite Rutles tunes and the disc was issued on the ever-eclectic Shimmy Disc label in 1990. ― Allmusic

In 1984, Geffen Records sued Neil Young on the grounds that he had submitted uncharacteristic, uncommercial records to the label. By the time a settlement had been reached, Young had been on the road with a country band called the International Harvesters for over a year and recorded a revamped version of Old Ways, a 1982 recording originally rejected by Geffen that was cut in the style of Harvest and Comes a Time, but with a stronger country leaning. Young depends heavily on friends, especially for vocals — Waylon Jennings sings harmony on six out of the ten tracks, and one of the others is a duet with Willie Nelson. Though populated by cowboys and country references, Young’s take on the genre is typically idiosyncratic, including a reworked version of his autobiography in “Get Back to the Country,” a cover of the 1956 Gogi Grant hit “The Wayward Wind,” and the uncategorizable “Misfits,” which portrays astronauts watching Muhammad Ali fights on television in space. Old Ways is not a great Neil Young album and at the time of its release served to alienate him even further from his audience, but it has its moments. ― Allmusic

Throughout 1969 and into 1970, CCR toured incessantly and recorded nearly as much. Appropriately, Cosmo’s Factory’s first single was the working band’s anthem “Travelin’ Band,” a funny, piledriving rocker with a blaring horn section — the first indication their sonic palette was broadening. Two more singles appeared prior to the album’s release, backed by John Fogerty originals that rivaled the A-side or paled just slightly. When it came time to assemble a full album, Fogerty had only one original left, the claustrophobic, paranoid rocker “Ramble Tamble.” Unlike some extended instrumentals, this was dramatic and had a direction — a distinction made clear by the meandering jam that brings CCR’s version of “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” to 11 minutes. Even if it wanders, their take on the Marvin Gaye classic isn’t unpleasant, and their faithful, exuberant takes on the Sun classics “Ooby Dooby” and “My Baby Left Me” are joyous tributes. Still, the heart of the album lays in those six fantastic songs released on singles. “Up Around the Bend” is a searing rocker, one of their best, balanced by the menacing murkiness of “Run Through the Jungle.” “Who’ll Stop the Rain”‘s poignant melody and melancholy undertow has a counterpart in Fogerty’s dope song, “Lookin’ out My Back Door,” a charming, bright shuffle, filled with dancing animals and domestic bliss – he had never been as sweet and silly as he is here. On “Long as I Can See the Light,” the record’s final song, he again finds solace in home, anchored by a soulful, laid-back groove. It hits a comforting, elegiac note, the perfect way to draw Cosmo’s Factory — an album made during stress and chaos, filled with raging rockers, covers, and intense jams — to a close. ― Allmusic

If you’d been a baker for more than 50 years, you could be forgiven for being sick of the sight of chocolate éclairs. Similarly, a half-century on from the first Stooges album, Iggy Pop has made it clear he’s not as in love with rock & roll as he once was. Albums such as 2009’s Preliminaires and 2012’s Après have found him exploring less aggressive and more thoughtful material, and Iggy continues this trend with 2019’s Free. In his liner notes, Iggy writes, “I began to recoil from guitar riffs in favor of guitarscapes, from twangs in favor of horns, from back beat in favor of space,” and that’s a concise and accurate summary of the sound he approaches on this album. While there are electric guitars on most of these numbers, there’s little in the way of fuzz or bark, and a ghostly trumpet and waves of atmospheric keyboards play a much bigger role in the arrangements. Iggy had a hand in writing three of the tracks on Free, but most of the songs were penned by his primarily collaborators on this album, trumpeter Leron Thomas and Noveller, who is credited with “guitarscapes.” There are a few playful moments, most notably on the sly and slinky “James Bond,” but for the most part, Free finds Iggy contemplating a culture caught in a tailspin, and while no one would have expected the guy singing on Fun House to set Dylan Thomas’ “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” to music back in the day, here his deep, craggy voice and tone of weary rage fits the classic verse like a glove. Not everything on this album works, and the sex and porn rant “Dirty Sanchez” may be the stupidest thing Iggy has sung since 2001’s misbegotten Beat Em Up, though at least take comfort in the fact he didn’t write it. As a detour from rock & roll, Free is a fine and compelling study of the mind and mood of Iggy Pop at the age of 72, and if it’s clearly the work of an older artist, that works to its favor, a pointed contrast to the abandon of his youth but with no less gravitas. ― Allmusic

Pet Shop Boys resume their exceptional late-period run with Hotspot, their third in a series of high quality collaborations with producer/engineer Stuart Price. Recorded at Berlin’s legendary Hansa Studios, the acclaimed duo’s 14th album finds them firmly in their element, delivering crisp electro-pop invocations, wry dance bangers, and melodic gems both sunny and stormy. Still more or less in the self-described “electronic purist” mode of 2013’s Electric and 2016’s Super, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe make a few allowances here, particularly on the melancholic standout, “Beneath the Heather,” which features some crafty psych-inspired guitar work from Suede guitarist Bernard Butler. Opening volley “Will-O-the-Wisp” is all hard synth bite and rippling tension, possessing a specific kind of dark energy that few acts can summon so well, let alone after nearly four decades together. Its intensity is offset by brighter dance cuts like the wry “Monkey Business” and the buoyant “Happy People” with its infectious chorus threaded with Tennant’s distinctive spoken-word rhymes. Lightly cloaked political stabs pop up here and there like on “Dreamland,” a collaboration with Years and Years’ Olly Alexander, that imagines a borderless world free of Brexit fears and immigration policies. The clever melodic shifts that are one of Pet Shop Boys’ hallmarks remain in evidence across Hotspot, giving songs like the tender “Only the Dark” a dreamy sense of uplift. Through it all, Tennant and Lowe feel as confident and progressive as ever, honoring their signature sound while continuing to push it into the future. ― Allmusic

Though there are still some traces of the confessionals that underpinned Beautiful Loser through Stranger in Town, Against the Wind finds Bob Seger turning toward craft. Perhaps he had to, since Against the Wind arrived after three blockbuster albums and never-ending tours. Even so, this record winds up not feeling as immediate or soulful as its predecessors, especially since it begins with a tossed-off rocker called “The Horizontal Bop,” possibly his most careless tune since “Noah.” It’s fun, but once it’s done, the record really starts to kick into high gear with “You’ll Accomp’ny Me,” a ballad the equal of anything on its two predecessors. Throughout Against the Wind, Seger winds up performing better on the ballads than the rockers, which, while good, tend to sound a little formulaic. Still, Seger’s formula is good and if “Her Strut” and “Betty Lou’s Gettin’ out Tonight” would have been second stringers on Stranger in Town, they offer a nice balance here, and the rest of the record alternates between similarly well-constructed rockers and introspective ballads like “Against the Wind” and “Fire Lake.” Compared to its predecessors, this does feel a little weak, but compared with its peers, it’s a strong, varied heartland rock album that finds Seger at a near peak. ― Allmusic

Crown of Creation appeared ten months after their last album, After Bathing at Baxter’s, and it doesn’t take the same kind of leap forward that Baxter’s did from Surrealistic Pillow. Indeed, in many ways, Crown of Creation is a more conservative album stylistically, opening with “Lather,” a Grace Slick original that was one of the group’s very last forays (and certainly their last prominent one) into a folk idiom. Much of what follows is a lot more based in electric rock, as well as steeped in elements of science fiction (specifically author John Wyndham’s book The Chrysalids) in several places, but Crown of Creation was still deliberately more accessible musically than its predecessor, even as the playing became more bold and daring within more traditional song structures. Jack Casady by this time had developed one of the most prominent and distinctive bass sounds in American rock, as identifiable (if not quite as bracing) as John Entwistle’s was with the Who, as demonstrated on “In Time,” “Star Track,” “Share a Little Joke,” “If You Feel” (where he’s practically a second lead instrument), and the title song, and Jorma Kaukonen’s slashing, angular guitar attack was continually surprising as his snaking lead guitar parts wended their way through “Star Track” and “Share a Little Joke.” The album also reflected the shifting landscape of West Coast music with its inclusion of “Triad,” a David Crosby song that Crosby’s own group, the Byrds, had refused to release — its presence (the only extant version of the song for a number of years) was a forerunner of the sound that would later be heard on Crosby’s own debut solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name (on which Slick, Paul Kantner, and Casady would appear). The overall album captured the group’s rapidly evolving, very heavy live sound within the confines of some fairly traditional song structures, and left ample room for Slick and Marty Balin to express themselves vocally, with Balin turning in one of his most heartfelt and moving performances on “If You Feel.” “Ice Cream Phoenix” pulses with energy and “Greasy Heart” became a concert standard for the group — the studio original of the latter is notable for Slick’s most powerful vocal performance since “Somebody to Love.” And the album’s big finish, “The House at Pooneil Corners,” seemed to fire on all cylinders, their amps cranked up to ten (maybe 11 for Casady), and Balin, Slick, and Kantner stretching out on the disjointed yet oddly compelling tune and lyrics. It didn’t work 100 percent of the time, ― Allmusic
