It was 50 years ago when The Beatles’ John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr astonished and delighted the world, ushering in the Summer of Love with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, a groundbreaking masterwork that became popular music’s most universally acclaimed album. The album is newly mixed by Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell in stereo, sourced directly from the four-track masters at Abbey Road Studios in London, and guided by the original, Beatles-preferred mono mix produced by his father, George Martin. This extensive collection gives an unprecedented insight into how The Beatles made their ground-breaking album. The box set features a new stereo version by Giles Martin and 33 tracks from the Sgt. Pepper sessions that place you in the studio as the group develop the songs.

Released in 1970 during the stopgap between Stand! and There’s a Riot Goin’ On, Greatest Hits inadvertently arrived at precisely the right moment, summarizing Sly & the Family Stone’s joyous hit-making run on the pop and R&B charts. Technically, only four songs here reached the Top Ten, with only two others hitting the Top 40, but judging this solely on charts is misleading, since this is simply a peerless singles collection. This summarizes their first four albums perfectly (almost all of Stand! outside of the two jams and “Somebody’s Watching You” is here), adding the non-LP singles “Hot Fun in the Summertime,” “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” and “Everybody Is a Star,” possibly the loveliest thing they ever recorded. But, this isn’t merely a summary (and, if it was just that, Anthology, the early-’80s comp that covers Riot and Fresh would be stronger than this), it’s one of the greatest party records of all time. Music is rarely as vivacious, vigorous, and vibrant as this, and captured on one album, the spirit, sound, and songs of Sly & the Family Stone are all the more stunning. Greatest hits don’t come better than this — in fact, music rarely does. ― Allmusic

For many their first encounter with classical music will be through its use in films and this collection makes a fantastic entry point to this rich and diverse world. Helpfully all tracks list the films alongside the music, so there will be no doubt as to where the music is familiar from.

Classical music has been used to memorable effect in films many times from Ride of the Valkyries in Apocalypse Now to Barber s Adagio in Platoon and from Also sprach Zarathustra in 2001: A Space Odyssey to Beethoven s Ninth in A Clockwork Orange. Occasionally, as in the case of Mozart s Piano Concerto No.21 used in Elvira Madigan, the film title has provided a lasting nickname for the music. All these favourites are included here.

Alongside two discs of popular favorites, there is a CD devoted entirely to piano music used in film, and another of opera favorites from the movies. Finally there are two discs of music composed for the cinema including the main themes from Star Wars and Schindler s List, both by John Williams, and classics from an earlier time including Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia and The Big Country.

With a running time approaching 8 hours of music this box set provides remarkable value for money.

Whether in its original serial form in the 1940s, in the low-budget films of the 1950s, in the television series of the 1960s, or even in the overgrown re-imaginings for blockbuster movies in the 1970s and beyond, the science-fiction genre on film (and videotape) has always had something cheesy about it, and that is part of its appeal. Even when the technical wizards at director George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic are dreaming up the next Star Wars movie, there is, at heart, a sense of the earliest, silliest versions of the genre still present. In that spirit come Neil Norman’s souped-up and synthesized treatments of the various scores for sci-fi films and TV series. Norman lists a raft of acoustic orchestral musicians in the credits, but their names are in smaller print than those of the guitarists and keyboard players who are the real driving force behind these excerpts from Star Trek, Star Wars, and many other similar efforts. Even in SACD fidelity, this is space music on the cheap. And Norman and his crew are better on the more synth-pop stuff; they nearly fall apart when trying to negotiate Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra (sorry, “2001: A Space Odyssey”). This is, however, just the thing to play over the P.A. system at the next sci-fi fan festival at a local motel, that is, if Norman himself hasn’t been contracted to play live. ― Allmusic

Blues in Orbit lacks the intellectual cache of the suites and concept pieces that loomed large in Ellington’s recordings of this period, but it’s an album worth tracking down, if only to hear the band run through a lighter side of its sound — indeed, it captures the essence of a late-night recording date that was as much a loose jam as a formal studio date, balancing the spontaneity of the former and the technical polish of the latter. Ellington and company were just back from a European tour when the bulk of this album was recorded at one after-midnight session in New York on December 2, 1959 — the arrangements had to be hastily written out when the copyist failed to appear for the gig. So on the one hand, the band was kicking back with these shorter pieces; on the other, the group was also improvising freely and intensely at various points. The title track, recorded more than a year before most of the rest, is a slow blues that puts Ellington’s piano into a call-and-response setting with the horns, with Ellington getting in the last word. “Villes Ville Is the Place, Man” is a bracing, beat-driven jaunt, highlighted by solos featuring Ray Nance, Harry Carney, and Johnny Hodges on trumpet, baritone sax, and alto, respectively. “Three J’s Blues” shows off composer Jimmy Hamilton playing some earthy tenor sax in a swinging, exuberant blues setting. “Smada” features Billy Strayhorn on piano and Johnny Hodges on alto, in a stirring dance number, and “Pie Eye’s Blues” is a hot studio improvisation featuring Ray Nance and Jimmy Hamilton trading three solos each. ― Allmusic

Jimmy Reed at Carnegie Hall is a double LP album by Jimmy Reed, released in 1961. Though the title suggests that the record was recorded live, it consists of a studio recreation of a Carnegie Hall performance on one disc and a second disc that is identical to an LP released separately as The Best of Jimmy Reed.

Reed’s recordings of “Bright Lights, Big City” and “Big Boss Man” were voted two of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

An integral part of the early 1980s thrash metal movement, New Jersey quartet Overkill were formed in 1980 by vocalist Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth and guitarist Bobby Gustafson, and also included bassist D.D. Verni and drummer Rat Skates (later replaced by Sid Falck). The band garnered a reputation for brutal, pounding speed and technique, but lacked the musical diversity to compete with heavy hitters like Metallica; still, Overkill built up a strong following in the metal underground with albums like 1985’s Taking Over and 1988’s Under the Influence. Gustafson quit in 1989 following the Years of Decay album, and was replaced by Rob Cannavino and Merritt Gant. The band recorded its most effective and varied album, Horrorscope, in 1991; drummer Tim Mallare took over on 1993’s I Hear Black. Overkill’s final major-label release was 1994’s W.F.O, after which the band moved to CMC International. With a new guitar team of Joe Comeau and Sebastian Marino, Overkill recorded albums like 1996’s The Killing Kind, 1997’s From the Underground and Below, and 1999’s Necroshine. Also issued in 1999, Coverkill celebrated the band’s influences with renditions of songs by Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, the Sex Pistols, and others.
Overkill soldiered on into the year 2000 with Bloodletting and recorded the following tour for a live album, 2002’s Live from Asbury Park. While on tour for their last two efforts, Ellsworth collapsed on-stage in Germany after suffering a mild stroke. It would prove to be a minor setback, however, as the band continued to not only put out albums, but also to refine its sound, starting with 2003’s Killbox 13 and continuing on with 2005’s ReliXIV and 2007’s Immortalis. In 2010, Overkill really experienced a new resurgence with the release of Ironbound, which even found the band making an appearance on the Billboard charts. They followed up with another album of classic thrash in 2012 with The Electric Age. Ellsworth suffered another health-related setback the following year, having to cancel some tour dates after contracting mild pneumonia. He soon bounced back, however, and, riding their new wave of success, they plunged back into the studio to record another fan-pleasing album of breakneck thrash. Titled White Devil Armory, it was released in July of 2014 through Nuclear Blast. The following year saw the arrival of the mid-career retrospective Historikill: 1995–2007, and in late 2016 Overkill issued a single, “Our Finest Hour,” in anticipation of the release of their 18th studio long-player, Grinding Wheel, which dropped in February 2017. ― Allmusic

Made when mono was still king, Bob Dylan’s self-titled 1962 debut is as understated of an entrance as any significant musician as ever made. Already well-versed in American roots music, Dylan simultaneously pays homage to tradition and extends it by putting his own stamp on classic material that metaphorically functions as the soil of our contemporary songs and styles. Free of ego, and performed with masterful conviction, Bob Dylan ranks with the debut efforts of similar artistic giants Elvis Presley and the Rolling Stones.

Mastered from the original master tapes, this restored mono SACD brings the contents of this seminal release as closest as they’ve ever come to master tape-quality in the original mono configuration. Transparent to the source, the simple sounds of Dylan’s voice, acoustic guitar, and harmonica take on lifelike perspective and directness—the “husk and bark” to which Robert Shelton referred in his now-legendary New York Times review of a Dylan appearance at Gerde’s Folk City. MoFi has made possible an inexpensive time-traveling trip back to the Greenwich Village coffeehouses and folk clubs in which Dylan cut his teeth, albeit in much better fidelity and without any annoying background chatter.

As the preferred mix at the time of the recording, the mono version presents Dylan as he and his producers originally intended. Since the separation of the stereo versions isn’t as sharp, the mono edition places Dylan’s vocals in the heart of the musical action and as one with the accompaniment. It paints listeners an incredibly accurate portrait of the attention-getting, concrete mass of sound that features no artificial panning and straight-ahead immersion into the music. This is how almost everyone first heard this timeless album—making the mono mix all the more historically valuable and truthful.

Much has been made of the commercial indifference that greeted the album upon its low-key release. Yet focusing on sales figures and the reaction of a public not yet hip to Dylan’s name or music is to miss the forest for the trees. Distinguished from the era’s other folk efforts by way of the determination, brazenness, and lived-through-this worldliness Dylan approaches the material and sings the songs, Dylan lays the groundwork for the path he’d soon trailblaze and everyone else would follow.

By nodding to Woody Guthrie at the same time he completely re-imagines a sobering tune such as Blind Lemon Jefferson’s “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean,” Dylan straddles the past and future. He also displays, with challenging authority and savant-like expertise, the ability to handle weighty topics such as death, sorrow, and lamentation with the vaudeville flair, bluesy mannerisms, and poignant command of an artist three times his age.

As Dylan scholar and pop-culture critic Greil Marcus observed in 2010, “Everybody knew Joan Baez and the Kingston Trio; if you knew Bob Dylan, you knew something other people didn’t, something that soon enough everybody had to know. Within a year, an album could put an adjective in front of the singer’s name as if it were already common coin.” It all starts here. ― Mofi.com

Bring it all back home – in mono. Originally designed by the artist for mono listening, Bob Dylan’s Bringing It All Back Home represents the moment that pop and rock music became their own art form, expressions finally treated with the same seriousness and respect as classical and jazz. Incalculably influential, the 1965 landmark established myriad benchmarks in songwriting, sound, artwork, and performance. It served the world notice that Dylan was no longer just the virtuoso visionary tuned into the wants of the folk community. It’s a disarming broadcast that declares Dylan’s surroundings and personality, and those of his audiences, whether they knew it or not, drastically changed.

As part of its Bob Dylan catalog restoration series, Mobile Fidelity is humbled to have the privilege of mastering the iconic album on its world-renowned mastering system and in its original mono format. Strictly limited to just 3,000 copies, the end result is the very finest, most transparent SACD of Bringing It All Back Home ever produced. Forever renowned for its organic sound, the album’s you-are-there-presence is fantastically enhanced on this superb version.

Since Bringing It All Back Home features the most instrumentation Dylan implemented in arrangements at that stage of his career, the set is undoubtedly vivid in stereo – particularly the electric half. Yet the Minnesota native paid particular attention to the mono mix, which here presents Dylan with unparalleled directness. The record’s second half sounds especially genuine, lifelike, and intimate in mono. It paints listeners an incredibly accurate portrait of the attention-getting mass of acoustic-based sound – and features no artificial panning or echo chamber of its stereo counterpart. Instead, you are immersed right into the music.

Indeed, the sonics on this Mobile Fidelity reissue are so realistic, balanced, and tonally accurate that acoustic guitars resonate with the woody decay they do as when you strum them on your lap. Equally vivid are the textures of the drum skins, amplified pitch of the electric guitars, and ambient hum of the interior space of Columbia’s Studio B. Both the plugged-in and acoustic sides claim a discerning level of microdynamics, spaciousness, imaging, and warmth that will send even the most rabid Dylan fans into a tizzy.

More than 50 years after its release, Bringing It All Back Home continues to come on like a prophetic transmission from a savant who’s privy to cerebral viewpoints, mental transferences, and “thought dreams” elusive to everyone but him. With the flipside of the album, Dylan strings together four of the most unflinching, forward-reaching, and boundary-breaking acoustic-based compositions ever played. In addressing liberating psychedelia, lost innocence, institutional naiveté, and tarnished relationships, respectively, Dylan constructs a compositional quartet/suite that functions as metaphor for his waving goodbye to political folk music’s imprisoning rules and bounding restrictiveness – and a rough guide to the transcendental poetry, shape-shifting vocal phrasing, and alternate tunings he now embraced.

Side One remains one of the boldest cohesive artistic statements ever made. Dylan, forever throwing down the gauntlet to detractors and narrow-minded fans, plugging in with a band and kicking it all off with the in-your-face hootenanny “Subterranean Homesick Blues” before romping, slashing, and rolling through “Maggie’s Farm,” another fun albeit caustic indictment of homogenous thought and bohemian method. Dylan’s attitude undergoes a self-awakening metamorphosis, his lyrical scope broadened, his hallucinogenic interests increased, his willingness to embrace paradoxes and shake them out with mind-convulsing aptitude in line with his progression towards bizarre imagery.

Ranked 31 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, Bringing It All Back Home marks the moment when paradigms permanently shifted, preexisting standards fell, and fresh aural, poetic, and sonic dialects came to fore. Albums don’t come more vetted. You deserve to experience the mono edition in the finest-possible quality, just as Dylan intended. ― mofi.com

This lesser-known Sonny Clark session (his only studio album not made for Blue Note) is sometimes issued under drummer Max Roach’s name, too. They are joined by bassist George Duvivier for a set of generally obscure Clark originals including “Minor Meeting,” “Blues Mambo,” and “My Conception” (which is taken as an unaccompanied piano solo). Although not obvious while listening to his recording, Clark’s life was in decline and this would be his penultimate date as a leader. ― Allmusic

Scheherazade and Other Stories is the sixth studio album by the British progressive rock band Renaissance, released in 1975. Some critics consider it their best album, although others prefer earlier albums. This is the first album in which Renaissance (Annie Haslam’s version) did not use quotes from actual classical pieces. Contrary to popular belief, “Song of Scheherazade” is not based on Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, but does have a recurring six-note motif that alludes to that work.
