With their 1978 eponymous debut, Van Halen simultaneously rewrote the rules of rock guitar and hard rock in general. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen redefined what the electric guitar could do, developing a blindingly fast technique with a variety of self-taught two-handed tapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and effects that mimicked the sounds of machines and animals. It was wildly inventive and over the top, equaled only by vocalist David Lee Roth, who brought the role of a metal singer to near-performance art standards. Roth wasn’t blessed with great technique, unlike Eddie, but he had a flair for showmanship derived as much from lounge performers as Robert Plant. Together, they made Van Halen into the most popular American rock & roll band of the late ’70s and early ’80s, and in the process set the template for hard rock and heavy metal for the ’80s. ― Allmusic

The heavy, psychedelic acid rock of Iron Butterfly may seem dated to some today, but the group was one of the first hard rock bands to receive extensive radio airplay, and their best-known song, the 17-minute epic “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” established that more extended compositions were viable entries in the radio marketplace, paving the way for progressive AOR. The track was written by vocalist, organist, and bandleader Doug Ingle, who formed the first incarnation of Iron Butterfly in 1966 in San Diego with drummer Ron Bushy. After the group moved to Los Angeles and played the club scene, it secured a recording contract and got national exposure through tours with the Doors and Jefferson Airplane. Following the release of their 1968 debut album, Heavy, original members Jerry Penrod (bass), Darryl DeLoach (vocals), and Danny Weis (guitar) left the band and were replaced by guitarist Erik Braunn and bassist Lee Dorman. Weis went on to join Rhinoceros. The new lineup recorded In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida later that year, which sold four million copies and spent over a year in the Top Ten. (The title has been translated as “In the Garden of Eden” or “In the Garden of Life.”) A shortened version of the title track, which contained extended instrumental passages with loud guitars and classical/Eastern-influenced organ, plus a two-and-a-half-minute drum solo, reached number 30 on the singles charts. The follow-up, Ball, showed greater musical variety and went gold, but it also marked the beginning of the band’s decline. Braunn left the group and was replaced by guitarists Mike Pinera and Larry “Rhino” Reinhardt, but the group’s success was largely over. Iron Butterfly broke up in 1971; Braunn and Bushy re-formed the group in the mid-’70s without success. ― Allmusic

Jefferson Airplane was the first of the San Francisco psychedelic rock groups of the 1960s to achieve national recognition. Although the Grateful Dead ultimately proved more long-lived and popular, Jefferson Airplane defined the San Francisco sound in the 1960s, with the acid rock guitar playing of Jorma Kaukonen and the soaring twin vocals of Grace Slick and Marty Balin, scoring hit singles and looking out from the covers of national magazines. They epitomized the drug-taking hippie ethos as well as the left-wing, antiwar political movement of their time, and their history was one of controversy along with hit records. Their personal interactions mirrored those times; the group was a collective with shifting alliances, in which leaders emerged and retreated. But for all the turmoil, Jefferson Airplane was remarkably productive between 1965 and 1972. They toured regularly, being the only band to play at all the major ’60s rock festivals — Monterey, Woodstock, even Altamont — and they released seven studio albums, five of which went gold, plus two live LPs and a million-selling hits collection that chronicled their eight chart singles. Rather than formally breaking up, they mutated into other configurations, Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship, and went on to further success in the 1970s and ’80s, before reuniting for an album and tour in 1989. ― Allmusic

One of the most internationally successful bands in all of heavy metaldom, Auburn, New York-born power metal outfit Manowar — Eric Adams (vocals), Karl Logan (guitars), Joey DeMaio (bass), and Donnie Hamzik (drums) — have sold over nine million records since their inception in 1980. Steeped in the pageantry of heavy metal, the group’s approach was designed to be the raw, primal, Viking antithesis of classic rock, and their music followed suit, based on raw, aggressive riffs, with lyrics that were mostly about fighting, violence, honor, and death. The band issued a pair of well received yet not so widely distributed albums — Battle Hymns (1982) and Into Glory Ride (1983) — before breaking in the U.K. and Europe with 1984’s Hail to England and Sign of the Hammer, leading to the group inking a deal with Atlantic and breaking big internationally with 1987’s Fighting the World, the latter of which featured guest narration on the track “Defender” from Orson Welles, who had died two years prior, yet recorded his part on a 1982 demo of the song. Released in 1988, Kings of Metal was even bigger and bolder, but it also marked the departure of founding member and guitarist Ross Friedman (Ross the Boss). The ambitious Triumph of Steel arrived in 1992, followed by a string of new releases — Louder Than Hell (1996), Warriors of the World (2002), Gods of War (2007), and The Lord of Steel (2012) — as well as re-recordings of early albums Battle Hymns MMXI (2010) and Kings of Metal MMXIV (2013). ― Allmusic

This session comes from close to the end of the line (1959) in the erstwhile swinging company of Barney Kessel on guitar, Ben Webster on tenor, and naysayers will be quick to point out that Lady Day wasn’t in peak form here. But Billie Holiday with some of the platinum chipped off the pipes is still way better than a buncha finger-snappin’ wannabes anyday. Her interpretations of the title cut, “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” and “Darn That Dream” hold you in the palm of her hand with their gentle swing and the band support here is never less than stellar. This Mobile Fidelity reissue (also available as an audiophile vinyl pressing) features in-the-control-room sound that makes this session sound even cozier. The Lady sings and swings. ― Allmusic

At a time when pop was dominated by dance music and pop-metal, Guns N’ Roses brought raw, ugly rock & roll crashing back into the charts. They were not nice boys; nice boys don’t play rock & roll. They were ugly, misogynistic, and violent; they were also funny, vulnerable, and occasionally sensitive, as their breakthrough hit, “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” showed. While Slash and Izzy Stradlin ferociously spit out dueling guitar riffs worthy of Aerosmith or the Stones, Axl Rose screeched out his tales of sex, drugs, and apathy in the big city. Meanwhile, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler were a limber rhythm section who kept the music loose and powerful. Guns N’ Roses’ music was basic and gritty, with a solid hard, bluesy base; they were dark, sleazy, dirty, and honest — everything that good hard rock and heavy metal should be. There was something refreshing about a band that could provoke everything from devotion to hatred, especially since both sides were equally right. There hadn’t been a hard rock band this raw or talented in years, and they were given added weight by Rose’s primal rage, the sound of confused, frustrated white trash vying for a piece of the pie. As the ’80s became the ’90s, there simply wasn’t a more interesting band around, but owing to intra-band friction and the emergence of alternative rock, Rose’s supporting cast eventually left, and he spent over 15 years recording before the long-delayed Chinese Democracy appeared in 2008. ― Allmusic

Hip-O’s excellent two-disc Tears for Fears Gold collection boasts 24 tracks from the veteran English duo. All of the obvious hits (“Shout,” “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Head Over Heels,” “Mad World,” and “Sowing the Seeds of Love”) are here, but it’s the inclusion of tracks from their woefully overlooked 2004 comeback album, Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, that warrants a high rating. With the exception of the impossibly fun — and more than a little “Beatlesque” — title cut, all of the album’s best songs are featured, making this compilation essential for anybody who wonders what happened after 1990. While the bonus-disc edition of Tears Roll Down (Greatest Hits 82-92) is the best overview of their career up through The Seeds of Love, Gold successfully brings their whole surprisingly weighty career into focus. ― Allmusic

After the massive success of his 1981 album Face Value, Phil Collins didn’t take a much of a break. Genesis released Abacab six months later, then headed out on a long tour. When they got back, Collins jumped right into recording his second solo album, 1982’s Hello, I Must Be Going! The album wasn’t a huge departure from the formula established on Face Value, built as it was on introspective, gut-spilling ballads, horn-driven R&B jams, arty rockers, and dramatic breakup songs.. In fact, the first track, the vitriolic “I Don’t Care Anymore,” sounds like a very close relative of “In the Air Tonight,” only less mysterious and more in your face. Still effective though, and with the same magical drum sound Collins got on that earlier song. The R&B-based tracks are well served by the Earth, Wind & Fire Horns, and if nothing is quite on par with “I Missed Again,” there’s not a huge drop-off in quality. There are a few less ballads, with Collins only slowing down on the lovely “Don’t Let Him Steal Your Heart Away” and the lush “Why Can’t It Wait ‘Til Morning,” which foreshadows his career as a singer for hire on many a movie soundtrack. Along with the upgraded production values overall, there are a couple of surprises on Hello, notably the uptempo pop tune “Like China” (which features some blistering guitar work from Daryl Stuermer) and the almost note-perfect take on the Supremes’ “You Can’t Hurry Love,” which sounds less like a pastiche and more like a loving tribute. Another departure from Face Value comes on the song “Thru These Walls,” where Collins is playing a character instead of writing from a place of pain and frustration, which was one of the things that made that album so devastating. Despite the change in tone from intensely personal and dark to slightly detached and even lighthearted in spots, the album is still a winning follow-up that shows Collins to be in full control of songwriting and production. It may be a shade less impressive than Face Value, but that was a hard act to follow. ― Allmusic

Dance Into the Light is as self-explanatory as titles get: after dwelling in the darkness following a divorce and a split from Genesis, Phil Collins is ready to get happy. That isn’t to say Dance Into the Light is devoid of either ambition or sobriety: Collins turns “Just Another Story” into a piece of meditative funk, while “Wear My Hat,” “River So Wide,” and “Lorenzo” find the drummer delving into African rhythms reminiscent of Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, and Sting (it also points toward the work Collins did on Tarzan just a few years later). Nevertheless, the overall tenor of the record is bright and cheerful, the sound of a man ready for a revival. Sometimes, he’ll throw out a specific callback to his past — the title track recalls the snappy punch of “Sussudio” — but often, he settles into an expertly modulated craft, favoring sprightly pop to somnolent ballads. Given this chipper outlook, it’s odd that the thing that undoes Dance Into the Light — outside of the slight cognitive dissonance between the straight-ahead pop and Afrobeat explorations — is an indulgence all too typical of ’90s albums made with the CD in mind: tracks stretch out one or two minutes longer than necessary, adding up to a 13-track album that feels flabby at just over an hour. Trimmed by 20 minutes, this would’ve been a nice little adult pop album, but as it stands, it sounds like a lively little record attempting to escape its immaculately tailored straitjacket. ― Allmusic

Universal Music Enterprises continues its double-disc Gold series with 31 tracks of Steppenwolf. Remastered and featuring extensive liner notes by notable music writer Scott Schinder, Gold is far too much music for listeners who are content with “Born to Be Wild,” “Magic Carpet Ride,” “Sookie Sookie,” and “The Pusher.” The bluesy pub rock of the band’s later years can get a bit repetitive, and the inclusion of three John Kay solo numbers — do you really want to hear another version of “Drift Away”? — seems unnecessary, but Gold is by far the most comprehensive compilation yet of the band that coined the term “heavy metal thunder.” Fans who just want the singles would be better off picking up MCA’s single-disc 16 Greatest Hits. ― Allmusic

From the vantage of 2001, the year Rhino released the double-disc retrospective Shine Like It Does: The Anthology (1979-1997), it’s a little hard to believe that the Australian sextet really rivaled U2 for popularity in 1987/1988, when Kick worked its way to multi-platinum global success. At the time, they belonged next to the likes of U2 and R.E.M., two post-punk legends that worked their way into the mainstream because they were a quintessential college rock band of the ’80s, thrillingly balancing style with substance. This, of course, means that they can still sound tied to the times, but that’s leavened by their heritage as an Australian rock band — which means no matter how stylish they got, they could still rock really, really hard. Unfortunately, at the height of their popularity, they made records that camouflaged their raw talents with synthesized bass and drums, which is what rock bands did in the late ’80s. And, throughout their career, INXS did tend to favor the sounds of the time, whether it was the angular new wave of Shabooh Shoobah, the evocative Listen Like Thieves, the Stonesy funk of Kick, or the alt-rock explorations of Welcome to Wherever You Are. This can make Shine Like It Does sound a bit like a music travelogue of its time, especially because its 42 songs do have their fair share of songs that seem like filler, but what stands out when the collection is finished is how damn good INXS was when it all clicked. That could mean such new wave classics as “The One Thing,” “Don’t Change,” or “Original Sin,” the college rock staples of “Kiss the Dirt (Falling Down the Mountain)” and “Listen Like Thieves,” or such mainstream breakthroughs as “What You Need,” “Need You Tonight,” “Devil Inside,” “New Sensation,” “Never Tear Us Apart,” “Suicide Blonde,” and “Disappear.” And it didn’t stop there, either, because such latter-day songs as “Heaven Sent,” “Not Enough Time,” “Beautiful Gir,l” and “Elegantly Wasted” may not have been big hits, but they did hold their own against those hits. All these are here, along with some rarities, album tracks, and quasi-rarities, such as the Jimmy Barnes duet “Good Times” from The Lost Boys soundtrack and a number of remixes and single edits, giving this a reason to spread out over two discs. The problem is, even though there’s more hits than misses, this doesn’t quite justify its length for many listeners, even while it makes a convincing case that INXS has more than a disc worth of classics. There’s something off in the sequencing or selection, it’s hard to tell which, that keeps it from being a knockout. Still, there’s something to be said for this collection — it may not prove that INXS transcends their time like U2 or R.E.M., but it does prove that, at their best, they could turn out some of the best rock & roll of their time. ― Allmusic

The Ultimate Collection is a bountiful assortment of Chris de Burgh’s best material, up to and including songs from 2000’s Quiet Revolution album. The 38 tracks spotlight the best of de Burgh’s love songs, fairy tales, and quicker pieces, resulting in a delightful melange of this Argentinian-born’s music that spans nearly three decades. There’s an equal number of classics and newer songs, placing favorites such as “Don’t Pay the Ferryman,” “Lady in Red,” and “High on Emotion” between subtleties like “When I Think of You,” “Tender Hands,” and “Snows of New York.” The entrancing beauty of “A Spaceman Came Travelling,” which doubles as a popular Christmas tune, is a welcomed inclusion, as is the mysterious “Traveller” from 1980’s Eastern Wind and the carefree airiness of “Say Goodbye to It All” off of Into the Light. “Patricia the Stripper 2000” is novel, but the original would have fared much better. But surprises such as “Man on the Line,” “Ecstasy of Flight” and “Waiting for the Hurricane,” all of which weren’t huge successes, balance out the rest of the tracks quite nicely, showcasing de Burgh’s more animated efforts. His gift for singing ballads is established on “A Woman’s Heart,” “Simple Truth,” and “By My Side,” three of his most endearing love songs. Only a couple of questionable songs are excluded from this set, like the powerful “Crusader” or the courtly grandeur of “Satin Green Shutters” from his debut album, as well as “Lonely Sky” from Spanish Train. Still, even with the absence of these pieces, The Ultimate Collection is truly a fitting title. ― Allmusic

In 1979, The Complete Buddy Holly gathered up all known Buddy Holly recordings in a six-LP box set, setting the standard for archival rock & roll reissues in the pre-CD era. Perhaps if this box never existed, the wait for a CD incarnation of Holly’s complete recordings wouldn’t have seemed quite so long, but chances are it would: as the CD revolution waned in the early days of the new millennium, every one of his peers saw their work boxed up in complete sets, leaving Buddy to the bootleggers, notably Purple Chick, who delivered an exhaustive set that covered the same ground as the 1979 box, adding fragments, overdubs, demos, and live performances for good measure, plumping up the collection to nine discs — just enough arcane material to make it of interest only to fanatics. The same can’t be said about Not Fade Away: The Complete Studio Recordings and More, the six-CD box Universal released in 2009, just after they managed to clear away whatever legal and logistical hurdles were standing in their way. To a certain extent, the excitement generated by this long-anticipated item is undercut slightly by Universal’s two previous 2009 releases, Memorial Collection and Down the Line: Rarities, which together offered five discs and 109 tracks of Buddy, including all major items, but as an overall experience, Not Fade Away easily eclipses any other Buddy Holly collection, offering the best presentation and sound, its bound hardcover book packaging lending it stature.

Of course, at 203 tracks it’s also complete, nearly 100 tracks longer than either the 1979 box or the combined two 2009s collections, offering all the masters, alternate takes, early recordings, demos, and apartment tapes presented in chronological order, which means the posthumous overdubs are featured last. Some items on the Purple Chick collection are missing, but they’re mainly fragments and live cuts of rough fidelity, things that are no great loss and of interest only to obsessives, as this tells the entirety of Holly’s story. Sometimes, the detail may be too great for some listeners, particularly in the first act, which is filled with scratchy audio, tentative hillbilly, and formative rockabilly. Holly had a prehistory longer than any early rock & roller — only Eddie Cochran, another tragic loss, came close to cutting so much music before his first hits — which means that there are no well-known tunes on the entire 35-cut first disc, but when Buddy’s prime starts on disc two, the momentum increases considerably, as he starts to pile up classic songs and innovations at a rapid pace. Without a doubt, it’s easier to appreciate Holly’s overall impact in a condensed set like Memorial Collection, as it doesn’t bog down in the details, but the details are naturally the things that make Not Fade Away so valuable to hardcore fans and scholars. Those details reveal the extent of Holly’s vision — how he absorbed Elvis, Bo Diddley, and Chuck Berry, creating some of the hardest early rock & roll; how he pointed the way toward folk-rock and the Beatles’ pop — and they give this box weight by providing the connective thread in his music, which in turn illustrates just how monumental his too-short career was. It’s a career that needed a testament like this, and although it’s taken too long to arrive, Not Fade Away is almost more valuable because of it, with the years only adding a greater perspective on the accomplishments of this true pioneer of American music. ― Allmusic

Little Richard was not the only original rock & roller to attempt a comeback in the late ’60s and early ’70s, but he may have been the one to take the greatest musical risks. Fats Domino merely updated his sound (albeit in a charming fashion), Jerry Lee Lewis refashioned himself as a hardcore country singer, and Chuck Berry pandered with “My Ding-A-Ling,” but Little Richard pushed himself on his three albums for Reprise, all of which were collected — along with his contributions to Quincy Jones’ 1972 Dollar$ soundtrack album, non-LP singles, session outtakes, and a complete unreleased album from 1972 called Southern Child — in 2005 by Rhino Handmade for the triple-disc set The King of Rock and Roll. Richard had been an active recording artist ever since the mid-’60s, when he had signed to Vee-Jay and cut effective but neglected soul singles, but the rock & roll revival of the late ’60s gave him the opportunity to launch a splashy, big-budget comeback, and he seized it. Instead of serving up the expected high-energy rock & roll on his 1970 LP, The Rill Thing, he recorded an eclectic, wide-ranging album that touched on country, acoustic blues, hard-driving funk, soul, melodic pop, and rock & roll. While there were wah-wah guitars and electric sitars that clearly marked it as a product of its time, those production quirks fade into the background, since the range and accomplishment of the music are quite staggering. It’s overpowering, but not in the familiar Little Richard fashion, where the boundless, reckless energy is the defining characteristic. Instead, The Rill Thing and the albums that followed it — 1971’s King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, 1972’s The Second Coming, and the unreleased Southern Child — all followed the same musical blueprint and aesthetic: Little Richard opened his music up, slowing things down on occasion, varied his arrangement and styles, and wrote powerful, memorable new songs, while carefully picking songs from Hank Williams, John Fogerty, and the Beatles to showcase the scope of his music. Sure, there still was the familiar piledriving rock & roll, but it was part of a mosaic of American roots music that proved that Little Richard could do it all — rock, pop, country, blues, soul, gospel, funk — and do it his own way. There were the occasional missteps — the instrumental jams all stretch out too long — but they were rare. On the whole, his Reprise work was all-encompassing, fully realized, and — in its own way — as exciting as his timeless work for Specialty. And that’s why The King of Rock and Roll isn’t just essential for any serious student of rock & roll, it’s one of the few reissues of this decade that can truly be called revelatory. ― Allmusic

After building a solid core audience through relentless touring and a string of hard-rocking albums, Foghat finally hit the big time in 1975 with Fool for the City. It still stands out as the best album in the group’s catalog because it matched their road-tested abilities as hard rockers to a consistent set of tunes that were both well-crafted and ambitious. The tone for the album is set by its title track: This hard-rocking gem not only pairs riff-driven verses with an effective shout-along chorus, but also throws in a few surprising moments where the guitars are taken out of the mix completely and Nick Jameson’s bass is allowed to take the lead in a funky breakdown. Fool for the City also produced an enduring rock radio favorite in “Slow Ride,” a stomping rock tune that transcends the inherent clichés of its “love is like a car ride” lyrics with a furious performance from the band and a clever arrangement that works in well-timed automotive sound effects during the verses and plays up the band’s ability to work an R&B-styled groove into their hard-rocking sound (again, note the thumping bassline from Jameson). Further radio play was earned with “Take It or Leave It,” an acoustic-based ballad that worked synthesizers into its subtle yet carefully layered arrangement to become one of the group’s finest slow numbers. The album’s other songs don’t stand like the aforementioned selections, but they all flow together nicely thanks to a consistently inspired performance from the band and clever little arrangement frills that keep the group’s boogie-oriented rock fresh (example: the witty spoken word bit at the end of “Drive Me Home”). All in all, Fool for the City is both Foghat’s finest achievement in the studio and one of the high points of 1970s hard rock. ― Allmusic

Steppenwolf entered the studio for their recording debut with a lot of confidence — based on a heavy rehearsal schedule before they ever got signed — and it shows on this album, a surprisingly strong debut album from a tight hard rock outfit who was obviously searching for a hook to hang their sound on. The playing is about as loud and powerful as anything being put out by a major record label in 1968, though John Kay’s songwriting needed some development before their in-house repertory would catch up with their sound and musicianship. On this album, the best material came from outside the ranks of the active bandmembers: “Born to Be Wild” by ex-member Mars Bonfire, which became not only a chart-topping high-energy anthem for the counterculture (a status solidified by its use in Dennis Hopper’s movie Easy Rider the following year), but coined the phrase heavy metal, thus giving a genre-specific name to the brand of music that the band played (and which was already manifesting itself in the work of bands like Vanilla Fudge and the just-emerging Led Zeppelin); the Don Covay soul cover “Sookie, Sookie,” which, as a single by the new group, actually got played on some soul stations until they found out that Steppenwolf was white; two superb homages to Chess Records, in the guise of “Berry Rides Again,” written (though “adapted” might be a better word) by Kay based on the work of Chuck Berry, and the Willie Dixon cover “Hoochie Coochie Man”; and Hoyt Axton’s “The Pusher,” an anti-drug song turned into a pounding six-minute tour de force by the band. The rest, apart from the surprisingly lyrical rock ballad “A Girl I Knew,” is by-the-numbers hard rock that lacked much except a framework for their playing; only “The Ostrich” ever comes fully to life among the other originals, but the songs would catch up with the musicianship the next time out.
