Nothing Has Changed is a bit of a cheeky title for a career retrospective from an artist who is known as a chameleon, and this triple-disc compilation has other tricks up its sleeve. Chief among these is sequencing the SuperDeluxe 59-track set in reverse chronological order, so it opens with the brand-new, jazz-inflected “Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)” and concludes with David Bowie’s debut single, “Liza Jane.” On paper, this seems a bit like a stunt, but in actuality it’s a sly way to revisit and recontextualize a career that has been compiled many, many times before. Previously, there have been single discs, double discs, and triple-disc boxes, but the largest of these was Sound + Vision, a box released in 1989, and the most recent was 2002’s The Best of Bowie, which featured slightly different track listings in different territories but generally stopped in the late ’90s. The two-CD version of Nothing Has Changed resembles this 2002 set — there are absences, notably “John, I’m Only Dancing,” “Diamond Dogs,” and “TVC15,” but they’re not noticed among the parade of standards — but it’s easily overshadowed by the triple-disc SuperDeluxe set. This version of Nothing Has Changed touches upon nearly every phrase of Bowie’s career, bypassing Tin Machine but finding space for early pre-“Space Oddity” singles that often don’t make Bowie’s comps, and naturally it samples from his fine Y2K records, plus his 2013 comeback The Next Day. This expansiveness alone would be noteworthy, but when it’s combined with the reverse sequencing the compilation forces listeners to reconsider an artist whose legacy seemed so set in stone it appropriately was enshrined in museums. Obvious high-water marks are undersold — there’s not as much Ziggy as usual, nor as much Berlin — so other eras can also enter the canon, whether it’s the assured maturity of the new millennium or the appealing juvenilia of the ’60s. The end result is something unexpected: a compilation that makes us hear an artist we know well in a whole new way. ― Allmusic

In 1989, not all major artists had their catalog available on CD, and one of the most notable absences was David Bowie. When the format was in its infancy, RCA had issued several of his classics, but those pressings were notoriously awful and were pulled from the market in 1985 when Bowie acquired the rights to the recordings. Sharp businessman that he is, he took the catalog to market, and after an intense bidding war, he chose to reissue his classic work through Rykodisc, an independent CD-only label that had earned acclaim for its work with Frank Zappa’s catalog. Instead of dumping all the discs on the market at once, the titles were slowly rolled out, beginning with a series-encompassing Sound + Vision, a three-CD/one-CD-ROM box set released to great fanfare in the fall of 1989. At the time, box sets were all the rage, following the template of Bob Dylan’s Biograph — an exhaustive career overview that offered all the basics, peppered with some revealing rarities. Upon its release, Sound + Vision was reviewed as if it belonged to this tradition, when it really inverted the formula, offering a series, not career, overview by showcasing alternate versions and rarities, along with album tracks, with a few familiar hits tossed in here and there to provide context. This was a tantalizing way to begin a reissue campaign, and it did receive gushing reviews — the CD-era publication Rock & Roll Disc breathlessly claimed “Suffice to say that the sound quality will give your ears an orgasm” — but once the reissue series completed and once Ryko lost the rights to the catalog, Sound + Vision looked more like a curiosity, an artifact of its time, than a major statement.

Much of the problem stems from its design — it was intended to show off the sound quality, which was a marked improvement over the RCA discs, and to show the depth and breadth of rarities within the vaults. It was not a career-capper; it was a teaser. It was enticing upon its release, and some of it remains so. There’s a clutch of early rarities that lead off the set — the original demo of “Space Oddity,” alternate single versions of “The Wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud” and “The Prettiest Star” — that are quite good, alternate takes on “John I’m Only Dancing” and “Rebel Rebel” that manage to be notably different without changing the feel, excellent outtakes from Diamond Dogs (a medley of “1984/Dodo”), Station to Station (a glittery, lush cover of Springsteen’s “It’s Hard to Be a Saint in the City”), and Young Americans (the superb “After Today,” a disco-rock song that should have been on the album and is hands down the best rarity here). These suggested the great unearthed treasures that lay ahead, and they remain necessary additions to any serious Bowie collection, particularly because they never showed up on another disc. If they were placed in a better forum, they would function like the rarities on either Biograph or Eric Clapton’s Crossroads — rarities that helped fill in the details of an artist’s story — but since they’re in a set that’s intended to showcase what the Ryko series would do, not what Bowie had done, they’re the main attraction instead of feeding into the greater narrative. And that narrative, while certainly capturing the sometimes bewildering twists and turns in Bowie’s career, is an alternate-universe narrative, lacking defining songs, from “Starman” to “Golden Years,” and presenting many familiar songs in odd, not particularly interesting variations (a live 1974 version of “Suffragette City,” a German version of “Heroes,” presented in a 1989 remix). Though it succeeds in conveying Bowie’s ever-changing moods, it lacks the substance and sense of a great box set, which this surely could have been. Instead, it’s an interesting artifact of the early days of CDs, right down to its overly elaborate packaging, and only those who want to relive that time, or need those rarities, will need this in their collection. ― Allmusic

Roger Waters was Pink Floyd’s grand conceptualist, the driving force behind such albums as Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. In the wake of Syd Barrett’s departure, Waters emerged as a formidable songwriter, but it’s this stretch of ’70s albums — each one nearly symphonic in its reach — that established him as a distinctive, idiosyncratic voice within rock and, following his departure from Floyd in 1985, he continued to create new works in this vein (notably, 1992’s Amused to Death) and capitalized on the enduring popularity of his old band by staging live revivals of Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall in their entireties. ― Allmusic

Genesis started life as a progressive rock band, in the manner of Yes and King Crimson, before a series of membership changes brought about a transformation in their sound, into one of the most successful pop/rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s. In addition, the group has provided a launching pad for the superstardom of members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and star solo careers for members Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Steve Hackett. Their roots go back to 1965 and a pair of rival groups, the Garden Wall and the Anon, formed by students at the Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey. They merged, with the result that 15-year-olds Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Michael Rutherford joined with 14-year-old Anthony Phillips, calling themselves the New Anon and recording a six-song demo featuring songs primarily written by Rutherford and Phillips. ― Allmusic

By the time Eric Clapton launched his solo career with the release of his self-titled debut album in mid-1970, he was long established as one of the world’s major rock stars due to his group affiliations — the Yardbirds, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Cream, and Blind Faith — which had demonstrated his claim to being the best rock guitarist of his generation. That it took Clapton so long to go out on his own, however, was evidence of a degree of reticence unusual for one of his stature. And his debut album, though it spawned the Top 40 hit “After Midnight,” was typical of his self-effacing approach: it was, in effect, an album by the group he had lately been featured in, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends. ― Allmusic

David Bowie has switched labels so often his catalog is cluttered with hits compilations, all purporting to be definitive. Since he is one of the few major artists with no compunction against putting all his hits on one disc, they’re all excellent, and 2002’s Best of Bowie is no exception, no matter which country you live in (brief explanation: sensitive to the needs of fans in different markets, Bowie and EMI/Virgin tailored a different Best of Bowie for every country it was released in — a collector’s and cataloger’s nightmare, but the basics apply for each variation). Yeah, there are great songs missing, and it loses a little focus toward the end, but all the big, big hits are here, in great sound and logical sequence. Bowie made more than his share of great albums, but if you just want the highlights, this is as good as Changesbowie in capturing them. ― Allmusic

In 1973, at the height of David Bowie’s Ziggy-shaped excess, a small, smirking skeleton came creeping out of his closet, paused to adjust its merry pointy hat, then rocketed to number eight on the U.K. chart. It was, of course, “The Laughing Gnome,” a reminder of his days directionlessly drifting through the ’60s, and a cause for ribald amusement wherever it played. Today, of course, Bowie is no stranger to embarrassment…nor to “The Laughing Gnome.” What, after all, was his role in the Labyrinthe movie but a twisted reprise of the Gnome’s naughtier excesses, while his Earthling album even offered its own return to the same kind of basics, including the varispeed vocals that made the Gnome laugh. But Bowie still remains acutely aware of the nature of his musical roots. Initial intentions for this compilation included a second disc packed with outtakes and oddities; these plans were abandoned at Bowie’s own request (the bootleg The Forgotten Songs of David Robert Jones celebrates his demands), and Anthology suffers accordingly. Of its 27 tracks, a mere handful can be missing from even a disinterested Bowie collection — the Love You Till Tuesday soundtrack version of “Ching A Ling,” and a handful of re-recordings made for 45 release. Everything else has now been repackaged so many times that even fresh remastering at first seems academic. And then you play the album. And then you play “The Laughing Gnome.” Though Bowie plotted a similar course through the mundane backwaters of nostalgic Englishness as fired Ray Davies’ best contemporary efforts, it’s not difficult to understand why this work was doomed to commercial failure. He was, at this time, targeting most of his energy directly into the heart of the Hip Easy Listening Intelligentsia — without pausing to wonder whether that crowd actually existed. Of course it didn’t, and Bowie was doomed before he got started. Too twee for mainstream rock tastes, and way too heavy for the Anthony Newley crowd with which subsequent critics have most gleefully allied him, Bowie’s subject matter was essentially little different to anything he has written about in the decades since then. If anything, in fact, it was even darker — child abuse (“Little Bombardier”), cannibalism (the magnificently apocalyptic “We Are Hungry Men”), and infanticide (“Please, Mr. Gravedigger”) vied with what might now be called the more characteristic themes of transvestism (“She’s Got Medals”) and sci-fi inflected utopia (“There Is a Happy Land”). Rearrange the songs a little and, thematically, “The London Boys” — a tale of betrayed modishness that takes the Kinks’ similarly themed “Big Black Smoke” to its inevitable, lonely conclusion — would not have been out of place on Bowie’s own Pin-Ups. The soaring, soulful “When I Live My Dream” could easily have lived with Young Americans, while the impulsive “Let Me Sleep Beside You” still demands a modern reprise. Elsewhere, “Ching A Ling” lent part of its melody line to the subsequent “Saviour Machine”; “Karma Man” was still appearing in Bowie’s live set into the early ’70s; and “Space Oddity,” present here in early demo form, would of course become one of his most enduring hits ever. But in allying all this incipient brilliance to a distinctly MOR soundtrack of piano, strings, and orchestral arrangements, Bowie was shooting himself in the foot, and today, excellent liner notes and a topnotch remastering job do not disguise the sheer unconventionality of this material. Even now, with his subsequent reputation as a musical chameleon firmly a part of his legend, “Silly Boy Blue,” “Maid of Bond Street,” and “There Is a Happy Land” remain disconcerting members of his canon. At the time, they were positively alien, and even Bowie would take another five years before he learned to understand that. ― Allmusic

Nobody really expected the Berlin Wall to come down in 1989, and so suddenly. Roger Waters especially, because he had once made a promise never to perform The Wall again after the 1980 tour until the bricks fell in Berlin. But they did, and Waters had no intention to renege on his promise. The Wall became a star-studded megaconcert to benefit the Memorial Fund for Disaster Relief, with larger bricks, bigger inflatable puppets, and a larger audience than any of the original Pink Floyd shows. There was always a contradiction in performing such a personal work in a stadium setting, but here it becomes especially acute when opening up the vocal tasks to a variety of artists. Bryan Adams is actually an astute choice for the cock rock swagger of “Young Lust,” but Cyndi Lauper ruins the spare funk of “Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2” with over-enthusiastic yelping. And you’ll definitely want to skip Jerry Hall’s reading of the background dialog before “One of My Turns” (“Oh my gawd, what a fabulous room! Are all these your guitars?” — a piece known word for word by every Floyd fan out there), as she seems unaware that a microphone can be used for amplification. By running through the album track by track, a lot of the effect of the live versions wears thin, as it invites constant comparison to the studio album. But the trial scene is handled well, with Albert Finney, Tim Curry, Marianne Faithfull, Thomas Dolby, and Ute Lemper taking on the characters in Waters’ psychological drama. It’s fun, a nice document, but only makes you want to return to the original album. ― Allmusic

Released to celebrate the 30th anniversary of George Thorogood & the Destroyers — their first album may not have come out until 1977, but they cut their first sessions in 1974 — Capitol’s Greatest Hits: 30 Years of Rock was designed to replace 1992’s The Baddest of George Thorogood and the Destroyers as the band’s definitive single-disc overview. Considering that the 1992 disc is out of print (as is the exhaustive and exhausting 1997 double-disc set Anthology), this does indeed stand as the best compilation currently in print, and even edges out Baddest by running a little bit longer and containing more of his late-’80s/early-’90s radio hits. Thing is, it doesn’t contain all of his hits — “Treat Her Right,” which was on the previous comp, is missing, as are several other charting songs: “Born to Be Bad,” “Hello Little Girl,” “I’m a Steady Rollin’ Man,” “Howlin’ for My Baby,” “Gone Dead Train,” and “I Don’t Trust Nobody.” Chances are, most listeners won’t notice that they are missing since not only are all of his big hits here — “Madison Blues,” “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer,” “Move It on Over,” “Who Do You Love,” “Bad to the Bone,” “I Drink Alone,” “Gear Jammer,” “Willie and the Hand Jive,” “You Talk Too Much,” “If You Don’t Start Drinkin’ (I’m Gonna Leave),” “Get a Haircut” — but because all of his songs pretty much sound exactly the same, all in the same key with the same riffs, same guitar licks, same lunkheaded vocals. For anybody who is not a fan, this makes listening to George Thorogood a maddening experience, but fans will find this to be a satisfying overview, even if it falls just short of being complete. ― Allmusic

Eric Clapton’s new millennium has largely been defined by collaborations with friends, beginning with a duet album with B.B. King following through with a Cream reunion and closing with tours with his former Blind Faith running mate, Steve Winwood. Clapton and Winwood did three concerts together at Madison Square Garden in February 2008 and the results were fruitful enough to spawn this double-disc album — along with its accompanying DVD set — and a moderately scaled 2009 tour. Live from Madison Square Garden culls 21 highlights from those three nights and spreads them over two discs, sequencing the songs so Traffic numbers alternate with selections from Blind Faith, Derek & the Dominos, blues standards, a handful of Clapton’s hits, and a heavy dose of Hendrix, who has no less than three songs here. That extended salute to Jimi is a good indication of the vibe here — this is a genuine shared co-billing with Clapton and Winwood trading vocals and solos almost equally. There’s not much ego here and not much hunger, either, with the two stars sliding into a relaxed groove that yields plenty of rewards. There’s a comfortable touch to their playing that’s greatly appealing, and the straightforward setting places the spotlight directly on their interplay. Clapton and Winwood might roll easy but they can still create some sparks, sometimes in unexpected places, such as the somewhat forgotten ’80s hits “Forever Man” and “Split Decision,” both which are highlights here. Ultimately, this isn’t an album of moments, but rather a sustained whole that finds Clapton and Winwood egging each other on to produce a wholly satisfying, if not quite surprising, reunion. ― Allmusic

Lynyrd Skynyrd was the definitive Southern rock band, fusing the overdriven power of blues-rock with a rebellious Southern image and a hard rock swagger. Skynyrd never relied on the jazzy improvisations of the Allman Brothers. Instead, they were a hard-living, hard-driving rock & roll band — they may have jammed endlessly on-stage, but their music remained firmly entrenched in blues, rock, and country. For many, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s redneck image tended to obscure the songwriting skills of their leader, Ronnie Van Zant. Throughout the band’s early records, Van Zant demonstrated a knack for lyrical detail and a down-to-earth honesty that had more in common with country than rock & roll. During the height of Skynyrd’s popularity in the mid-’70s, however, Van Zant’s talents were overshadowed by the group’s gritty, greasy blues-rock. Sadly, it wasn’t until he was killed in a tragic plane crash in 1977 along with two other bandmembers that many listeners began to realize his talents. Skynyrd split up after the plane crash, but they reunited a decade later, becoming a popular concert act during the early ’90s. ― Allmusic

The best Beach Boys album, and one of the best of the 1960s. The group here reached a whole new level in terms of both composition and production, layering tracks upon tracks of vocals and instruments to create a richly symphonic sound. Conventional keyboards and guitars were combined with exotic touches of orchestrated strings, bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, Theremin, Hawaiian-sounding string instruments, Coca-Cola cans, barking dogs, and more. It wouldn’t have been a classic without great songs, and this has some of the group’s most stunning melodies, as well as lyrical themes which evoke both the intensity of newly born love affairs and the disappointment of failed romance (add in some general statements about loss of innocence and modern-day confusion as well). The spiritual quality of the material is enhanced by some of the most gorgeous upper-register male vocals (especially by Brian and Carl Wilson) ever heard on a rock record. “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “God Only Knows,” “Caroline No,” and “Sloop John B” (the last of which wasn’t originally intended to go on the album) are the well-known hits, but equally worthy are such cuts as “You Still Believe in Me,” “Don’t Talk,” “I Know There’s an Answer,” and “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times.” It’s often said that this is more of a Brian Wilson album than a Beach Boys recording (session musicians played most of the parts), but it should be noted that the harmonies are pure Beach Boys (and some of their best). Massively influential upon its release (although it was a relatively low seller compared to their previous LPs), it immediately vaulted the band into the top level of rock innovators among the intelligentsia, especially in Britain, where it was a much bigger hit. ― Allmusic

Pet Sounds is the 11th studio album by the American rock band the Beach Boys. Released on May 16, 1966, it met a lukewarm critical and commercial reception in the United States, but received immediate success abroad, where British publications declared it “the most progressive pop album ever”. It charted at number two in the UK but number ten in the US, a significantly lower placement than the band’s preceding albums. In later years, Pet Sounds garnered enormous worldwide acclaim by critics and musicians alike, and is regarded as one of the most influential albums in the history of popular music.

It took quite a while for a definitive Barry White compilation to hit the market, but All-Time Greatest Hits — part of Mercury’s Funk Essentials series — finally filled the bill in 1995. Boasting a full 20 tracks from White’s heyday of 1973-1978, more than half of which made the R&B Top Ten, All-Time Greatest Hits is easily the most generous single-disc White collection on the market. It includes the edited single versions, not the full-length album tracks, which actually makes for a more digestible introduction to White’s achievements. Like his forebear Isaac Hayes, White was not just a deep-voiced crooner, but a talented producer and arranger who’d spent years honing his craft behind the scenes in the industry. And like Hayes, White spent a great deal of time setting up moods on his albums, using lush, sweeping orchestrations to build very gradually to climaxes. (Actually, that probably explains a good deal of his effectiveness.) But White was not simply a Hayes disciple; his swirling productions were less complex than Hayes’, but more in tune with the emerging disco sound, which certainly boosted his popularity. Plus, he took full advantage of R&B’s new lyrical permissiveness in the wake of Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On. If his voice was limited, it was also a tremendous asset for the kind of music he recorded — deep, resonant, caressing, but always suggestively masculine. The total package made White an R&B love-man icon not just for the disco era, but all time. For all but the most dedicated fans, All-Time Greatest Hits is one-stop shopping. ― Allmusic

Bob Dylan and the Band both needed the celebrated reunion tour of 1974, since Dylan’s fortunes had been floundering since Self Portrait and the Band stumbled with 1971’s Cahoots. The tour, with its attendant publicity, definitely returned both artists to center stage, and it definitely succeeded, breaking box office records and earning great reviews. Before the Flood, a double-album souvenir of the tour, suggests that these were generally dynamic shows, but not because they were reveling in the past, but because Dylan was fighting the nostalgia of his audience — nostalgia, it must be noted, that was promoted as the very reason behind these shows. Yet that’s what gives this music such kick — Dylan reworks, rearranges, reinterprets these songs in ways that are still disarming, years after its initial release. He could only have performed interpretations this radical with a group as sympathetic, knowing of his traits as the band, whose own recordings here are respites from the storm. And this is a storm — the sound of a great rocker, surprising his band and audience by tearing through his greatest songs in a manner that might not be comforting, but it guarantees it to be one of the best live albums of its time. Ever, maybe. ― Allmusic
