As a film, The Last Waltz was a triumph — one of the first (and still one of the few) rock concert documentaries that was directed by a filmmaker who understood both the look and the sound of rock & roll, and executed with enough technical craft to capture all the nooks and crannies of a great live show. But as an album, The Last Waltz soundtrack had to compete with the Band’s earlier live album, Rock of Ages, with which it bears a certain superficial resemblance — both found the group trying to create something grander than the standard-issue live double, and both featured the group beefed up by additional musicians. While Rock of Ages found the Band swinging along with the help of a horn section arranged by Allen Toussaint, The Last Waltz boasts a horn section (using Toussaint’s earlier arrangements on a few cuts) and more than a baker’s dozen guest stars, ranging from old cohorts Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan to contemporaries Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Van Morrison. The Band are in fine if not exceptional form here; on most cuts, they don’t sound quite as fiery as they did on Rock of Ages, though their performances are never less than expert, and the high points are dazzling, especially an impassioned version of “It Makes No Difference” and blazing readings of “Up on Cripple Creek” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” (Levon Helm has made no secret that he felt breaking up the Band was a bad idea, and here it sounds if he was determined to prove how much they still had to offer). Ultimately, it’s the Band’s “special guests” who really make this set stand out — Muddy Waters’ ferocious version of “Mannish Boy” would have been a wonder from a man half his age, Van Morrison sounds positively joyous on “Caravan,” Neil Young and Joni Mitchell do well for their Canadian brethren, and Bob Dylan’s closing set finds him in admirably loose and rollicking form. (One question remains — what exactly is Neil Diamond doing here?) And while the closing studio-recorded “Last Waltz Suite” sounds like padding, the contributions from Emmylou Harris and the Staple Singers are beautiful indeed. It could be argued that you’re better off watching The Last Waltz on video than listening to it on CD, but either way it’s a show well worth checking out. ― Allmusic

The most commercially successful pop group of the 1970s, the origins of the Swedish superstars ABBA dated back to 1966, when keyboardist and vocalist Benny Andersson, a onetime member of the popular beat outfit the Hep Stars, first teamed with guitarist and vocalist Bjorn Ulvaeus, the leader of the folk-rock unit the Hootenanny Singers. The two performers began composing songs together and handling session and production work for Polar Music/Union Songs, a publishing company owned by Stig Anderson, himself a prolific songwriter throughout the 1950s and 1960s. At the same time, both Andersson and Ulvaeus worked on projects with their respective girlfriends: Ulvaeus had become involved with vocalist Agnetha Faltskog, a performer with a recent number one Swedish hit, “I Was So in Love,” under her belt, while Andersson began seeing Anni-Frid Lyngstad, a one-time jazz singer who rose to fame by winning a national talent contest. ― Allmusic

Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote the book on Southern rock with their first album, so it only made sense that they followed it for their second album, aptly titled Second Helping. Sticking with producer Al Kooper (who, after all, discovered them), the group turned out a record that replicated all the strengths of the original, but was a little tighter and a little more professional. It also revealed that the band, under the direction of songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, was developing a truly original voice. Of course, the band had already developed their own musical voice, but it was enhanced considerably by Van Zant’s writing, which was at turns plainly poetic, surprisingly clever, and always revealing. Though Second Helping isn’t as hard a rock record as Pronounced, it’s the songs that make the record. “Sweet Home Alabama” became ubiquitous, yet it’s rivaled by such terrific songs as the snide, punkish “Workin’ for MCA,” the Southern groove of “Don’t Ask Me No Questions,” the affecting “The Ballad of Curtis Loew,” and “The Needle and the Spoon,” a drug tale as affecting as their rival Neil Young’s “Needle and the Damage Done,” but much harder rocking. This is the part of Skynyrd that most people forget — they were a great band, but they were indelible because that was married to great writing. And nowhere was that more evident than on Second Helping. ― Allmusic

The CE3K score was a masterful mixture of eerie suspense and tremendous emotive bombast, complete with hair-raising moments and the great big playful musical conversation between the mothership and the humans. The album, alas, was a fairly pitiful affair, poorly mixed, sequenced lamely, and missing most of the conversation. This splendid CD edition has been designed to remedy the mistakes just after the twentieth anniversary. Most of the music from the film is included on the disc, along with an alternate cue and some music edited out of the film (much of which has found its way back into the special editions). Happily, the complete musical conversation is here, too, delightful and magnificent. The remixing and remastering has resulted in tremendous sound improvement, making this CD an essential acquisition. ― Allmusic

The Allman Brothers came first, but Lynyrd Skynyrd epitomized Southern rock. The Allmans were exceptionally gifted musicians, as much bluesmen as rockers. Skynyrd was nothing but rockers, and they were Southern rockers to the bone. This didn’t just mean that they were rednecks, but that they brought it all together — the blues, country, garage rock, Southern poetry — in a way that sounded more like the South than even the Allmans. And a large portion of that derives from their hard, lean edge, which was nowhere more apparent than on their debut album, Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd. Produced by Al Kooper, there are few records that sound this raw and uncompromising, especially records by debut bands. Then again, few bands sound this confident and fully formed with their first record. Perhaps the record is stronger because it’s only eight songs, so there isn’t a wasted moment, but that doesn’t discount the sheer strength of each song. Consider the opening juxtaposition of the rollicking “I Ain’t the One” with the heartbreaking “Tuesday’s Gone.” Two songs couldn’t be more opposed, yet Skynyrd sounds equally convincing on both. If that’s all the record did, it would still be fondly regarded, but it wouldn’t have been influential. The genius of Skynyrd is that they un-self-consciously blended album-oriented hard rock, blues, country, and garage rock, turning it all into a distinctive sound that sounds familiar but thoroughly unique. On top of that, there’s the highly individual voice of Ronnie Van Zant, a songwriter who isn’t afraid to be nakedly sentimental, spin tales of the South, or to twist macho conventions with humor. And, lest we forget, while he does this, the band rocks like a motherf*cker. It’s the birth of a great band that birthed an entire genre with this album. ― Allmusic

Suzi Quatro is a performer as famous for her image as her music; Quatro was rock & roll’s prototypical Bad Girl, the woman in the leather jumpsuit with the enormous bass guitar (well, it looked enormous, given that Quatro is only five feet tall), looking sexy but ferocious as she banged out her glam rock hits in her ’70s glory days. Quatro is a woman who titled one of her albums Your Mamma Won’t Like Me for a reason. But there’s more to Suzi Quatro than all that, and she seems determined to show off the full range of her 50-year career in music on the box set The Girl from Detroit City. Quatro is a rocker but she’s also a showbiz lifer, and the music spread over these four discs is the work of someone up to do a little bit of everything, and along with Chapman/Chinn thunderboomers like “Can the Can,” “49 Crash,” and “Daytona Demon,” you also get vintage garage rock (three numbers from Quatro’s first band, the Pleasure Seekers, including the gloriously snotty “What a Way to Die”), easygoing pop numbers like “Stumblin’ In” (her hit duet with Chris Norman of Smokie), power ballads such as “Lonely Is the Hardest,” heartbroken numbers like “Heart of Stone,” country-inflected songs such as “Two Miles Out of Georgia,” an electro-processed dance version of “Wild Thing” (with Reg Presley of the Troggs as Suzi’s duet partner), show tunes (two songs from the British revival of Annie, Get Your Gun with Quatro as Annie Oakley), a tribute to Elvis Presley (“Singing with the Angels,” featuring James Burton and the Jordanaires), and even a hint of smooth jazz on “If You Can’t Give Me Love.” The Girl from Detroit City is sequenced so that the first three discs play like a writ-large “best-of” collection, while disc four is mostly devoted to rarities and unreleased material, including such puzzlers as a sexed-up cover of the Normal’s “Warm Leatherette” and a lushly melodramatic version of the Eagles’ “Desperado,” with Jeff Beck on guitar. This set’s desire to cover all the bases of Quatro’s life in music is its blessing and its curse; her most devoted fans will be thrilled with the eclectic track selection, but folks most interested in Suzi the Rocker will find themselves skipping through much of disc three and nearly all of disc four. (Those folks would be better served with EMI’s single-disc The Essential Suzi Quatro.) Still, The Girl from Detroit City certainly goes the extra mile to tell the Suzi Quatro story in all its complexity and detail, and Suzi offers plenty of her own thoughts on her life and career in the extensive liner notes and song-by-song commentary. ― Allmusic

The four-CD retrospective The Legendary Decca Recordings represented both an attempt to present the essence of Ella Fitzgerald’s two-decade tenure at Decca Records and to defend that period against the conventional wisdom that not until she moved to Verve Records in the mid-’50s was her talent given full rein. Divided into four sections, the collection began with “The Very Best of Ella,” not exactly a greatest-hits set, though it started with her first big hit, “A-Tisket, A-Tasket,” and included such chart successes as “Undecided,” “Cow-Cow Boogie,” and “Stone Cold Dead in the Market.” Also included were such classics of scat singing as “Oh, Lady Be Good” and “How High the Moon” and the signature song “You’ll Have to Swing It (Mr. Paganinni).” Thus, with only one disc, producers Orrin Keepnews and Joel Dorn accomplished their goals of including Fitzgerald’s most memorable work for Decca and demonstrating that this work was as good as any she ever did. The second disc, “Ella & Friends,” featured duets with Louis Armstrong, the Ink Spots, Louis Jordan, and the Mills Brothers, among others. With the third disc, “Ella Sings Gershwin & Others,” the producers went on to show how her Decca recordings anticipated the ones on Verve. Of course, the popular Verve songbooks featured not only song standards but also name arrangers, and the fourth disc “Ella & the Arrangers” demonstrated that, again, Decca had gotten there first, pairing her with many gifted arrangers. Ella Fitzgerald recorded a great deal of material for Decca over the years, and some of it certainly justifies the criticisms made of the catalog in general. But The Legendary Decca Recordings presented it in the best possible light and included the most impressive sides from the period. ― Allmusic

Although they certainly had an experimental and exploratory side, at least for a garage band, the Electric Prunes were always considered first and foremost a singles band by Reprise Records, and the group’s singles were carefully mixed to sound perfect coming through a mono car radio, while the LP versions of the same songs would be mixed for a home-based stereo system, which means the radio mixes were much punchier. This 24-track set collects all of the Prunes’ singles for Reprise during the heady psychedelic period of 1966 through 1969, including the classic hit “I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night),” the Bo Diddley-rhythmed “Get Me to the World on Time,” and other oddities that didn’t get much or any radio time like “Wind-Up Toys,” which rides an intriguing, staggered beat and shows that this band could have done just fine if left alone to develop. They weren’t left alone to do that. By the time of their third LP, Mass in F Minor, a concept album of psychedelic versions of Latin prayers produced by David Axelrod (it was essentially his solo project), the Electric Prunes had become a brand and not a band, and none of the original members were left in the group. This collection hints at a band that had the grit of the Rolling Stones, the innovative flair of the Beatles, and a willingness to try new things, even if they didn’t work out so well. These tracks have a grit and growl that the LPs lack. They still sound great blasting from the past out of a car sound system, mono or not. Oh, then there’s the extra treat of a wah-wah pedal radio spot the band did for the Vox company. It was a different time.

― Allmusic

Relying on their top-notch songwriting and impeccable vocals, the Bee Gees were able to craft a long-running career that began in the late ’50s in Australia. Along the way they became a hit-producing psychedelic pop group in England during the ’60s, the biggest disco band in the world in the ’70s, and had a late comeback as adult contemporary crooners in the ’90s. Their long-reaching influence extended past sales figures and saw their sound and style mirrored in acts as disparate as Justin Timberlake and of montreal. ― Allmusic

It’s difficult to separate 2016’s Blackstar from The Next Day, the album David Bowie released with little warning in 2013. Arriving after a ten-year drought, The Next Day pulsated with the shock of the new — as Bowie’s first album of new material in a decade, how could it not? — but ultimately it was grounded in history, something its cover made plain in its remix of Heroes artwork. Blackstar occasionally recalls parts of Bowie’s past — two of its key songs, “Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)” and “‘Tis a Pity She Was a Whore,” were even aired in 2014 as a supporting single for the Nothing Has Changed compilation (both are revamped for this album) — but Bowie and producer Tony Visconti are unconcerned with weaving winking postmodern tapestries; now that they’ve shaken free their creative cobwebs, they’re ready to explore. Certainly, the luxurious ten-minute sprawl of “Blackstar” — a two-part suite stitched together by string feints and ominous saxophone — suggests Bowie isn’t encumbered with commercial aspirations, but Blackstar neither alienates nor does it wander into uncharted territory. For all its odd twists, the album proceeds logically, unfolding with stately purpose and sustaining a dark, glassy shimmer. It is music for the dead of night but not moments of desolation; it’s created for the moment when today is over but tomorrow has yet to begin. Fittingly, the music itself is suspended in time, sometimes recalling the hard urban gloss of ’70s prog — Bowie’s work, yes, but also Roxy Music and, especially, the Scott Walker of Nite Flights — and sometimes evoking the drum’n’bass dabbling of the ’90s incarnation of the Thin White Duke, sounds that can still suggest a coming future, but in the context of this album these flourishes are the foundation of a persistent present. This comfort with the now is the most striking thing about Blackstar: it is the sound of a restless artist feeling utterly at ease not only within his own skin but within his own time. To that end, Bowie recruited saxophonist Donny McCaslin and several of his New York cohorts to provide the instrumentation (and drafted disciple James Murphy to contribute percussion on a pair of cuts), a cast that suggests Blackstar goes a bit farther out than it actually does. Cannily front-loaded with its complicated cuts (songs that were not coincidentally also released as teaser singles), Blackstar starts at the fringe and works its way back toward familiar ground, ending with a trio of pop songs dressed in fancy electronics. These don’t erase the heaviness of the opening quartet but such a sequencing suggests Blackstar is difficult when the main pleasure of the record is how utterly at ease it all feels: Bowie’s joy in emphasizing the art in art-pop is palpable and its elegant, unhurried march resonates deeply. ― Allmusic
