It’s almost impossible to regard the soundtrack albums for the Michael Wadleigh documentary Woodstock, simply as music, apart from the event that inspired them or what that event has come to represent. Music from the Original Soundtrack and More: Woodstock was originally released by Atlantic’s Cotillion imprint as a three-LP set in a gatefold sleeve. It topped the Billboard Charts for four weeks and sold two million copies. It sold so well that Cotillion issued a sequel double album of more music from the festival that never appeared in the film. The LPs took the music out of the historical sequence of the festival and re-ordered (and edited) it for a sense of flow. Whether or not it accomplished its objective has been the subject of much debate and beyond this review’s scope. What is relevant is that these performances signified via their spotty recording quality — and sometimes dodgy performances — that there was an amazing array of legendary talent on hand at Woodstock; though not all of it is captured here. Rhino’s 2009 remastered edition of this set on a double CD is the cleanest edition yet, but even it has problems: the source tapes were problematic at best. It restores the original LP order, features new liners by Gene Sculatti, and has more photos in the booklet. Musically, the second disc sounds the least dated with its over the top performances by a shockingly great Santana with “Soul Sacrifice,” Ten Years After’s guitar workout on “I’m Goin’ Home,” Jimi Hendrix’s “Star Spangled Banner” medley (still a stunner after all these decades); the Jefferson Airplane’s rocking and raucous version of “Volunteers,” and the orgiastic Sly & the Family Stone medley that includes “Dance to the Music,” “Music Lover,” and an insanely great “I Want to Take You Higher.” There is some filler as well thanks to a drippy John Sebastian track called “Rainbows All Over Your Blues,” and an indulgent “Love March” by an out-of-their-prime Butterfield Blues Band.

Disc one is more complex. There are some fine moments here, especially the CS&N and CSN&Y tunes, including “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” (perhaps not perfect in voice but a very inspired performance), and “Wooden Ships,” with a decent if not thrilling “Sea of Madness,” in between. There is a desultory “We’re Not Gonna Take It” from the Who that is out of context, given they performed the entirety of Tommy. While Canned Heat’s “Goin’ Up the Country” has aged well, Country Joe & the Fish’s “The “Fish” Cheer/I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-To-Die Rag” has not, nor has Joan Baez’s performance of “Drug Store Truck Drivin’ Man.” Her version of “Joe Hill” is generic. Richie Havens’ “Freedom” is still thrilling, especially since it is preceded by Sebastian opening the entire set up with another duller-than-dull “I Had a Dream.” The “Summer of Love” had been over for two years by the time Woodstock took place, and riots in Watts, Detroit, Newark, and other places had occurred, as well as an escalation in the Vietnam War. The most out of place thing here is Sha Na Na’s “At the Hop,” which sounds surreal but ragged and right, and Joe Cocker’s “With a Little Help from My Friends,” that closes disc one; it’s electrifying if rather out of tune. So as it stands, Woodstock is a wildly mixed bag, and not particularly pleasant to listen to, but it does indeed have a significant place in the rock pantheon and should be regarded more as an artifact than as an album in its own right. ― Allmusic

Legendary Deep Purple and Rainbow guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (b. April 14, 1945, Weston-super-Mare, England) shifted his musical focus away from hard rock in the late ’90s and started concentrating on his love of Renaissance-era music. He formed Blackmore’s Night with his fiancée, vocalist/lyricist Candice Night (b. May 8, 1971, Hauppauge, Long Island, New York), and recruited other musicians from around the world to combine elements of world music, Renaissance, new age, folk, and rock & roll. Blackmore didn’t exactly retire his Fender Stratocaster, but he plays acoustic guitar almost exclusively in Blackmore’s Night. His acoustic guitar melodies and Night’s clear, ethereal voice blend with a host of instruments such as mandolins, keyboards, pennywhistles, violins, tambourines, military drums, and hurdy-gurdies. Blackmore once described the band’s sound as “Mike Oldfield meets Enya.” ― Allmusic

Hands down, this epochal concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden — first issued on three LPs in a handsome orange-colored box — was the crowning event of George Harrison’s public life, a gesture of great goodwill that captured the moment in history and, not incidentally, produced some rousing music as a permanent legacy. Having been moved by his friend Ravi Shankar’s appeal to help the homeless Bengali refugees of the 1971 India-Pakistan war, Harrison leaped into action, organizing on short notice what became a bellwether for the spectacular rock & roll benefits of the 1980s and beyond. The large, almost unwieldy band was loaded with rock luminaries — including Beatles alumnus Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Badfinger, and two who became stars as a result of their electric performances here, Leon Russell (“Jumpin’ Jack Flash”/”Youngblood”) and Billy Preston (“That’s the Way God Planned It”). Yet Harrison is in confident command, running through highlights from his recent triumphant All Things Must Pass album in fine voice, secure enough to revisit his Beatles legacy from Abbey Road and the White Album. Though overlooked at the time by impatient rock fans eager to hear the hits, Shankar’s opening raga, “Bangla Dhun,” is a masterwork on its own terms; the sitar virtuoso is in dazzling form even by his standards and, in retrospect, Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, and Alla Rakha amount to an Indian supergroup themselves. The high point of the concert is the surprise appearance of Bob Dylan — at this reclusive time in his life, every Dylan sighting made headlines — and he read the tea leaves perfectly by performing five of his most powerful, meaningful songs from the ’60s. Controversy swirled when the record was released; then-manager Alan Klein imposed a no-discount policy on this expensive set and there were questions as to whether all of the intended receipts reached the refugees. Also, in a deal to allow Dylan’s participation, the set was released by Capitol on LP while Dylan’s label Columbia handled the tape versions. Yet, in hindsight, the avarice pales beside the concert’s magnanimous intentions, at a time when rock musicians truly thought they could help save the world. ― Allmusic

The brainchild of former Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, Rainbow quickly developed into one of the ’70s most successful heavy metal bands behind charismatic front man Ronnie James Dio. Together, the duo would produce a string of acclaimed albums which are still considered classics of the genre. But the group would change their musical approach numerous times following the singer’s departure, eventually confusing and alienating much of their audience. Releasing eight albums during it’s decade long run, the band finally came to an end when Blackmore departed to rejoin his old Deep Purple comrades in a full-fledged reunion in 1984. And while the impact of Rainbow’s influence has faded with the intervening decades, theirs was a crucial chapter in the development of heavy metal and hard rock. ― Allmusic

Composer Mike Oldfield rose to fame on the success of Tubular Bells, an eerie, album-length conceptual piece employed to stunning effect in the film The Exorcist. Born May 15, 1953, in Reading, England, Oldfield began his professional career at the age of 14, forming the Sallyangie folk duo with his sister Sally; a year later, the siblings issued their debut LP, Children of the Sun. By the age of 16, he was playing bass with Soft Machine founder Kevin Ayers’ group the Whole World alongside experimental classical arranger David Bedford and avant-garde jazz saxophonist Lol Coxhill; within months, Oldfield was tapped to become the band’s lead guitarist prior to recording the 1971 LP Shooting at the Moon. ― Allmusic

For all but the completists, this anthology should more than suffice as an apt compact-disc retrospective of Canned Heat’s releases on Liberty Records. To that end, it’s a more or less chronological overview of the combo’s LPs, commencing with a trio of tunes from a spring 1967 studio session that predates their self-titled debut (1967).Primary is an extended, seven-plus-minute “On the Road Again,” losing the trippy pretensions of the more popular version. Rather, it churns and steadily burns throughout, displaying Canned Heat’s primordial boogie-fused R&B delivery. The remainder of disc one focuses on the aforementioned Canned Heat (1967), the follow-up Boogie With Canned Heat (1968), and a half-dozen previously unreleased sides, this time from the fall of 1967 with a slightly different lineup that included Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson (guitar/vocals), Larry “The Mole” Taylor (bass), Henry “Sunflower” Vestine (guitar), and Bob “The Bear” Hite (vocals). Frank Cook (drums), who had contributed to the band’s first effort, was replaced by Adolfo “Fido” de la Parra (drums). It is this aggregate that is considered the core of the “classic” incarnation. They are thoroughly solid, especially on John Lee Hooker’s “Whiskey and Wimmen” (sic), a title that would resurface several years later when they faced off with Hooker on Hooker ‘n’ Heat (1971). Another not-to-be-missed rarity is the nearly ten-minute “Gotta Boogie” jam building off of Hooker’s familiar rambling “Boogie Chillen” riff, as it explores some of Canned Heat’s trademark instrumental interaction. This is most prominent between Wilson and Hite, and predates “Fried Hockey Boogie,” although the vibe is undeniably the same. Disc one ends with two vintage radio adverts for Levi Strauss & Company and Boogie With Canned Heat, respectively. Disc two picks up with the singles “Evil Woman” and “Amphetamine Annie,” among the other anticipatory tracks. Also included are “Going Up the Country,” “Time Was,” a take of the seasonal release “Christmas Blues” with Dr. John, as well as a 1968 vocal-less reworking of Robert Johnson’s “Terraplane Blues” — the latter pair being offered here for the first time. The same is true of the Hooker ‘n’ Heat outtake “It’s All Right” and the poignant reading of “Human Condition,” featuring Wilson on lead vocals. While those are the only hard-to-find recordings on this disc, there are two radio ads at the tail end. Otherwise, the albums Living the Blues (1968), Hallelujah (1969), Future Blues (1970), Historical Figures & Ancient Heads (1971), as well as The New Age (1973), are given their due, though most casual listeners and/or purists may see these to be filler rather than killer. The accompanying 28-page liner booklet is filled with discographical information and a great historical essay from noted music journalist Greg Russo. ― Allmusic

The original members of Toto were L.A.-based session men who had played with everyone from George Benson to Boz Scaggs and wanted to create something they could call their own. They scored a hit straight out of the gate with the album rock hit “Hold the Line” from their 1978 debut. Their biggest success, however, came in the early ’80s with a pair of smash hits, “Rosanna” and “Africa,” plus the breakout, six-Grammy success of the Toto IV album. The band endured some major personnel shake-ups over the years, and in 1992, founding drummer Jeff Porcaro died unexpectedly, but Toto continued working, even as the individual members kept their lucrative session careers going. ― Allmusic

Formed in 1967 by former Motions guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen, the Dutch quartet Shocking Blue originally had a lineup of VanLeeuwen on guitar, lead vocalist Fred DeWilde, bass player Klaasje Van der Wal, and drummer Cornelius Van der Beek, and the initial configuration of the band had a minor homeland hit with “Lucy Brown Is Back in Town” a year later in 1968. Things really got moving, though, when DeWilde was replaced by sultry singer Mariska Veres, whose sexy presence and solid singing brought the band a second Netherlands hit, “Send Me a Postcard,” and then a huge international smash with “Venus” in 1970 after the group had signed to Jerry Ross’ Colossus Records imprint. Although Shocking Blue’s albums (1968’s Shocking Blue, 1969’s At Home, 1970’s Scorpio’s Dance, 1971’s 3rd Album, 1972’s Inkpot, 1972’s Attila, 1973’s Dream on Dreamer, and 1974’s Good Times) featured progressive rock elements and inventive arrangements thanks to VanLeeuwen’s writing and production skills, the band was essentially marketed as a pop singles unit, and while they scored several subsequent hits in their homeland, none of the group’s releases approached the massive saturation success of “Venus.” Veres left Shocking Blue in 1974 to pursue a solo career, and while there have been various reunions and different touring incarnations of the band over the years (including a version fronted by Veres in the ’90s), its creative history ended then. VanLeeuwen later re-surfaced in the folk/jazz group Galaxy-Lin, while his most famous composition, “Venus,” continued to see play on oldies stations. Veres died of cancer in 2006 at the age of 59. ― Allmusic

Reflecting her years as a music industry veteran, Sia Furler took a self-aware, practical approach to her return to the spotlight. She recorded her comeback album, 1000 Forms of Fear, to get out of her publishing contract; its acclaim led to This Is Acting, a collection of songs originally written for — and rejected by — clients such as Adele, Rihanna, and Beyoncé. As the album title hints, there’s more going on here than just recycling. In a way, Furler is acting when she writes songs to fit the images these artists portray, and her own interpretations of them add another layer of theatrical distance. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing — she initially shopped “Chandelier” to Rihanna and Beyoncé before keeping it for herself and imbuing it with the unique frailty that made it a smash hit. Sia’s skill at crafting songs full of drama and vulnerability that feel real, no matter how loud they get, is in full force on This Is Acting, particularly its first two tracks. Originally intended for Adele — another master of huge-yet-genuine-sounding songs — “Bird Set Free” and “Alive” are filled with wounded empowerment and vocal acrobatics that sound just as powerful (if less bombastic) coming from Sia. Elsewhere, Furler’s songwriting is more generic, for better and worse: “Unstoppable” boasts the confidence of a hit single that could belong to any number of divas, but even a presence as compelling as Sia can’t elevate “Broken Glass” or the Beyoncé reject “Footprints” above cookie-cutter balladry. Though she returns to the intimate songwriting of her pre-pop career on “One Million Bullets” — the lone song Furler wrote for herself — many of This Is Acting’s most interesting and successful moments happen when Sia takes on more unexpected roles. A pair of songs intended for Rihanna let her show off a more lighthearted side: The spare, reggae-tinged pulse of “Cheap Thrills” echoes Major Lazer’s “Lean On” (yet another song Rihanna rejected), but a backing chorus of what sounds like alien children reinforces that this is a Sia song, while “Reaper” lets her explore a more easygoing version of her seize-the-day anthems. Given that Furler didn’t originally plan to make these songs her own, it’s impressive that This Is Acting works as well as it does — only the wannabe banger “Move Your Body” and “Sweet Design”‘s flashy, hard-hitting R&B are truly unconvincing. For the most part, however, This Is Acting’s meta-pop is another example of how cleverly Sia brings her her experiments into the mainstream. ― Allmusic

The 1980s were a golden age for guitar heroes but even six-string slingers need a hero of their own. Enter Joe Satriani. More than a hero, Satriani was a mentor, setting an example of what could be done with the instrument and also serving as a teacher to such luminaries as Kirk Hammett, Charlie Hunter, Primus’ Larry LaLonde, and Steve Vai. This alone makes Satriani a significant figure in the history of rock guitar, but when he launched a career as a recording artist in 1986, he performed the rare feat of crossing over to a wide audience via instrumental guitar music. His 1987 album Surfing with the Alien turned him into a star, kicking off a series of hit records, successful tours, and plum supporting gigs — including backing Mick Jagger in the ’80s, joining Deep Purple in the ’90s, and playing with Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony in the supergroup Chickenfoot — that stretched well into the 21st century. ― Allmusic
