The Smile Sessions is a compilation album and box set released by American rock band the Beach Boys on October 31, 2011 that focuses on abandoned recording sessions which – if completed – would have followed the Beach Boys’ eleventh studio album Pet Sounds. It features comprehensive session highlights and outtakes, while the first 19 tracks comprise an approximation of what the completed Smile album might have sounded like based on a template established in 2004 for the rerecorded Brian Wilson Presents Smile.

The compilation is the first and only package devoted to the 1960s Smile recordings originally produced by Brian Wilson, arriving after decades of public anticipation and numerous false starts. The project was led primarily by audio engineers Alan Boyd, Mark Linett, and Capitol A&R director Dennis Wolfe, with Wilson acting as a remote supervisor, assisting the engineers with some mixing decisions. Wilson later stated that while the compilation is “not a far cry” from his original vision, he prefers his 2004 solo version. It is preceded by the similar box set The Pet Sounds Sessions (1997).

To be fair, this six-CD set is really for completists only, since the price tag is likely to put off anyone else. But if you’ve been hooked on the beautiful guitar work of Hank Marvin and the surprisingly muscularity of the band, delving deeper is a very good idea. Not only do you get all the big hits — like “Apache,” “F.B.I.,” and “The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt” (or even the wonderfully named “I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Arthur”) — you get literally everything.There’s the obscure “Quartermaster’s Stores,” the traditional tune that would have been their first single if “Apache” hadn’t proved to be so popular (it was relegated to the B-side), and some stuff that might have been better off left in the vaults, like “Lonely Bull” or “That’s the Way It Goes,” which were really little more than album-filler from back in the days when albums consisted of a few hits and anything else to fill up 40 minutes. What’s most astonishing, however, is the fact that the Shadows produced consistently high-quality material, moving beyond the twang to dip their feet in the waters of Spain (“Tres Carabeles”) and even some early music (“Lute Number”). Quite how they found the time for it all while keeping up a busy schedule behind Cliff Richard is another matter. Marvin’s guitar work is a joy throughout, and the British king of the whammy bar uses it wisely and well. He might not have been the fastest or most fluent player around, but he knew how to work and develop a melody and what not to play — no wonder he was a major influence on an entire generation of guitar heroes, who learned to play by copying his records. Add on top a great sense of pun (“Theme From a Filleted Place” anyone?) and you have an enjoyable collection. Yes, it can get a bit samey if you play all six CDs one after the other. But, like all things, this is to be enjoyed in moderation, to realize that during these seven years, even as rock changed around them, the Shadows remained at the height of their formidable powers. ― Allmusic

The Ramones were the first punk rock band. Other bands, such as the Stooges and the New York Dolls, came before them and set the stage and aesthetic for punk, and bands that immediately followed, such as the Sex Pistols, made the latent violence of the music more explicit, but the Ramones crystallized the musical ideals of the genre. By cutting rock & roll down to its bare essentials — four chords; a simple, catchy melody; and irresistibly inane lyrics — and speeding up the tempo considerably, the Ramones created something that was rooted in early ’60s, pre-Beatles rock & roll and pop but sounded revolutionary. Since their breakthrough was theoretical as well as musical, they comfortably became the leaders of the emerging New York punk rock scene. While their peers such as Patti Smith, Television, Talking Heads, and Richard Hell all were more intellectual and self-consciously artistic than the Ramones, they nevertheless appealed to the same mentality because of the way they turned rock conventions inside out and celebrated kitschy pop culture with stylized stupidity. The band’s first four albums set the blueprint for punk, especially American punk and hardcore, for the next two decades. And the Ramones themselves were major figures for the next two decades, playing essentially the same music without changing their style much at all. Although some punk diehards — including several of their peers — would have claimed the band’s long career wound up undercutting the ideals the band originally stood for, the Ramones always celebrated not just the punk aesthetic, but the music itself. ― Allmusic

Blackstar (stylised as ★) is the twenty-fifth and final studio album by English singer David Bowie. It was released worldwide through Bowie’s ISO Records label on 8 January 2016, Bowie’s 69th birthday. Bowie died two days after its release. Co-producer Tony Visconti described the album as Bowie’s intended swan song and a “parting gift” for his fans before his death.

Blackstar was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching the number one spot in a number of countries in the wake of Bowie’s death, and becoming Bowie’s first and only album to reach number one on the Billboard 200 album chart in the U.S. The album remained at the no. 1 position in the UK charts for three weeks before being replaced by one of Bowie’s compilation albums, Best of Bowie.

Nominally, the Police were punk rock, but that’s only in the loosest sense of the term. The trio’s nervous, reggae-injected pop/rock was punky, but it wasn’t necessarily punk. All three members were considerably more technically proficient than the average punk or new wave band. Andy Summers had a precise guitar attack that created dense, interlocking waves of sounds and effects. Stewart Copeland could play polyrhythms effortlessly. And Sting, with his high, keening voice, was capable of constructing infectiously catchy pop songs. While they weren’t punk, the Police certainly demonstrated that the punk spirit could have a future in pop music. As their career progressed, the Police grew considerably more adventurous, experimenting with jazz and various world musics. All the while, the band’s tight delivery and mastery of the pop single kept their audience increasing, and by 1983, they were the most popular rock & roll band in the world. Though they were at the height of their fame, internal tensions caused the band to splinter apart in 1984, with Sting picking up the majority of the band’s audience to become an international superstar. ― Allmusic

At only two discs (and 44 songs), it’s impossible to portray the complete picture of the Sparrow, but this is a very nice, manageable set that does a pretty good job. ― Allmusic

One of the 1970s’ most successful hard rock bands in spite of critical pans and somewhat reluctant radio airplay (at first), Grand Funk Railroad built a devoted fan base with constant touring, a loud, simple take on the blues-rock power trio sound, and strong working-class appeal. The band was formed by Flint, MI, guitarist/songwriter Mark Farner and drummer Don Brewer, both former members of a local band called Terry Knight & the Pack. They recruited former ? & the Mysterians bassist Mel Schacher in 1968, and Knight retired from performing to become their manager, naming the group after Michigan’s well-known Grand Trunk Railroad.

They performed for free at the 1969 Atlanta Pop Festival, and their energetic, if not technically proficient, show led Capitol Records to sign them at once. While radio shied away from Grand Funk Railroad, the group’s strong work ethic and commitment to touring produced a series of big-selling albums over the next few years; five of their eight releases from 1969 to 1972 went platinum, and the others all went gold. Meanwhile, Knight promoted the band aggressively, going so far as to rent a Times Square billboard to advertise Closer to Home, which turned out to be the band’s first multi-platinum album in spite of a backlash from the rock press. However, Grand Funk Railroad fired Knight in March of 1972, who promptly sued; the band spent most of the year in a court battle that ended when they bought Knight out. ― Allmusic

Often it seems that every note Elvis Presley ever recorded has been repackaged and reissued in every conceivable combination, but there has never been a set comparable to 2010’s The Complete Elvis Presley Masters, a lavish limited 30-CD set that rounds up all 711 completed takes from Presley, including 100 relative rarities. There’s never been an Elvis box like this and, apart from Sony/Legacy’s near-simultaneously released complete Miles Davis box, no other single set that covers so much ground — and even that isn’t quite right, because that only covers Miles’ Columbia albums, whereas this boxes the entirety of Elvis’ legacy. The Complete Elvis Presley Masters doesn’t cast new light on that legacy, but that’s a tall order for any body of work as well documented as Elvis’, whose every nook and cranny has been examined in sets both large and small. If anything, listening to his complete masters in chronological order supports the conventional wisdom of the arc of Elvis’ career, how it began with a burst of brilliance and slowed down after he returned from the Army, how he revved back up in 1968 and then maintained cruise control in the ’70s, picking up speed every once and a while, as on Elvis Country or Aloha from Hawaii. Surprises are few, arriving mainly in the sheer number of gospel, seasonal, and soundtrack recordings Presley cut during the ’60s, their abundance slowing the momentum somewhat in the second third of this box, but that only makes the 1968 comeback seem stronger, and that only underscores that the delight of The Complete Elvis Presley Masters is its details, how it tells one of the greatest tales of the 20th century in a luxuriously thorough, leisurely manner. Surely this is too grand for most listeners, but for those with deep pocketbooks this is a set that justifies its expense, both in its historic import and entertainment value. ― Allmusic

Musically, Reed’s work didn’t have too much in common with the sonic bombast of the glam scene, but at least it was a place where his eccentricities could find a comfortable home, and on Transformer Bowie and his right-hand man, Mick Ronson, crafted a new sound for Reed that was better fitting (and more commercially astute) than the ambivalent tone of his first solo album. Ronson adds some guitar raunch to “Vicious” and “Hangin’ Round” that’s a lot flashier than what Reed cranked out with the Velvets, but still honors Lou’s strengths in guitar-driven hard rock, while the imaginative arrangements Ronson cooked up for “Perfect Day,” “Walk on the Wild Side,” and “Goodnight Ladies” blend pop polish with musical thinking just as distinctive as Reed’s lyrical conceits. And while Reed occasionally overplays his hand in writing stuff he figured the glam kids wanted (“Make Up” and “I’m So Free” being the most obvious examples), “Perfect Day,” “Walk on the Wild Side,” and “New York Telephone Conversation” proved he could still write about the demimonde with both perception and respect. The sound and style of Transformer would in many ways define Reed’s career in the 1970s, and while it led him into a style that proved to be a dead end, you can’t deny that Bowie and Ronson gave their hero a new lease on life — and a solid album in the bargain. ― Allmusic
