Deep Purple survived a seemingly endless series of lineup changes and a dramatic mid-career shift from grandiose progressive rock to ear-shattering heavy metal to emerge as a true institution of the British hard rock community; once credited in The Guinness Book of World Records as the globe’s loudest band, their revolving-door roster launched the careers of performers including Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, and Ian Gillan.Deep Purple were formed in Hertford, England, in 1968, with an inaugural lineup that featured guitarist Blackmore, vocalist Rod Evans, bassist Nick Simper, keyboardist Jon Lord, and drummer Ian Paice. Initially dubbed Roundabout, the group was first assembled as a session band for ex-Searchers drummer Chris Curtis but quickly went their own way, touring Scandinavia before beginning work on their debut LP, Shades of Deep Purple. The most pop-oriented release of their career, the album generated a Top Five American hit with its reading of Joe South’s “Hush” but otherwise went unnoticed at home. The Book of Taliesyn followed (in the U.S. only) in 1969, again cracking the U.S. Top 40 with a cover of Neil Diamond’s “Kentucky Woman.” ― Allmusic

Welcome to Long Beach 1971, the latest album in earMUSIC s Deep Purple reissue series that, over the last two years, has seen the release of rare live material from the band, including Stockholm 1970 , Paris 1975 and Graz 1975 .

It was recorded at Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California, on July 30, 1971, and was broadcast on radio (KUSE 91.5 FM), a showcase for a support performance to Rod Stewart and The Faces.

An official release for a concert that has long been considered a landmark for the band, the set featured tracks ( Speed King and Child in Time ) from their fourth studio album, June 1970 s Deep Purple In Rock . This was a transitional release for the Mk II version of the band, being their first hard rock affair as well as their commercial breakthrough as the third leading über rock band of the day along with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Completing the set that day were a considerably extended version of Mandrake Root from their July 1968 debut album Shades Of Deep Purple , and Strange Kind Of Woman , the follow up single to Black Night from February 1971 (and an album track from the US iteration of July 1971 s Fireball LP). ― Amazon

Reuniting with producer Glyn Johns, the steady hand who guided Slowhand back in 1977, doesn’t provide Eric Clapton with much of a jolt for his 23rd studio album, but it does provide the veteran guitarist with no small degree of nicely weathered warmth. Such mellowed good vibes are the calling card of I Still Do, which otherwise proceeds along the same path Clapton’s records follow in the 21st century: he blends covers of well-worn blues standards with a couple of J.J. Cale tunes, a few old pop standards, a Bob Dylan chestnut, and original songs that draw upon aspects of all of these. “Spiral” and “Catch the Blues,” the two EC originals that anchor the middle of the album, are handsomely crafted tunes that complement the rest of the record; they don’t draw attention to themselves but rather show how hard “Cypress Grove” swings and how “Alabama Woman Blues” crawls, and reveal the lightness of “I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine” and “Little Man, You’ve Had a Busy Day.” Although “I’ll Be Seeing You” ends I Still Do on a bit of a wistful note, this album is neither melancholy nor some kind of summation. It is simply Clapton being Clapton, enjoying the company of his longtime band and songs he’s loved, and here he’s fortunate enough to be produced by Johns, whose expert touch gives this weight and color absent from the otherwise amiable Old Sock. That’s enough to give I Still Do some resonance because Johns focuses not on the songs but the interplay: it’s not a vibe record so much as it’s an album about the interplay of old pros who still get a kick playing those same old changes years after they’ve become second nature. ― Allmusic

Buckingham Nicks is the debut and sole studio album by the American rock duo Buckingham Nicks. Produced by Keith Olsen, the album was released in September 1973 by Polydor Records. Buckingham Nicks is notable as an early commercial collaboration between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, both of whom later joined Fleetwood Mac.. The album was a commercial failure on its original release, and despite the duo’s subsequent success, it has yet to be commercially remastered or re-released on any format since 1973. The rights are now with the former couple as the original company Anthem (not the Canadian label of Rush fame) has long since become defunct.

Ranging from soul to soft rock, singer and songwriter Gino Vannelli earned several hits during the 1970s, including “People Gotta Move” and “I Just Wanna Stop.” Vannelli learned to play the drums early in life and studied music theory at McGill University. He formed an R&B band with two brothers, but later began recording solo material for RCA in 1970. He became popular four years later when A&M released his hit single “People Gotta Move,” from the Powerful People album (retitled People Gotta Move). Many albums followed, including Storm at Sunup (1975), Gist of the Gemini (1976), A Pauper in Paradise (1977), Brother to Brother (1978), Nightwalker (1981), Black Cars (1985), Big Dreamers Never Sleep (1987), Inconsolable Man (1990), and Live in Montreal (1992). After a lengthy absence from the recording studio, Vannelli returned in 1995 with Yonder Tree; Slow Love followed three years later. After yet another lengthy absence from the studio, Gino recorded the ambitious Canto in 2003 and 2006’s These Are the Days, which featured remastered recordings of some of his best-known work alongside seven new compositions. A Good Thing, featuring a CD and accompanying book of poetry, was issued in early 2009, followed by another CD-book package, Stardust in the Sand, later that same year. ― Allmusic

When it comes to new wave compilations that attempt to strike a balance between well-known hits and lesser-known singles that deserved more play, the New Wave installment in Hip-O’s Gold series has to be considered exceptional. If you already own a good number of new wave comps, you will likely have a good portion of what is here, including Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love,” the Waitresses’ “I Know What Boys Like,” Bow Wow Wow’s “I Want Candy,” and Nena’s “99 Luftballoons.” This being a generous 30-track, two-disc set, there’s a lot of room left for the deeper inclusions. These songs — like the Passions’ “I’m in Love with a German Film Star,” Ultravox’s “Slow Motion,” and Altered Images’ “I Could Be Happy” — tiptoed around the margins of the mainstream and were only played on some of the more adventurous U.S. radio stations. These are just as representative of the era as their oft-heard counterparts, so those who are beginning to familiarize themselves with new wave should by no means feel as if this set is out of their depth. ― Allmusic

First off, this 19-disc box is not a complete recorded works of John Mellencamp. It excises his earliest years as Johnny Cougar — a Main Man-inspired moniker that resulted in three albums he’s disowned, but which really aren’t that bad at all — beginning the story with 1979’s John Cougar, the album where he truncated his name and toughened up his sound. It still took him a while until he scored a real breakthrough, and it arrived when he tightened up his attack with the assistance of producer Don Gehman and came up with the often-excellent American Fool, a record that sailed through on the strength of its hit singles (“Hurts So Good,” as hard a rocker as he ever did, and the teenage romance “Jack & Diane”) and helped make Mellencamp the kind of Midwestern rocker who weathered shifting fashions, not unlike Bob Seger. Mellencamp consolidated things with 1983’s Uh-Huh, when Kenny Aronoff eased on over to his position on drums, and when the singer/songwriter’s blue-collar Springsteen aspirations become apparent. His rock got leaner and harder here — “Crumblin’ Down” is merciless, as is “Authority Song” — but he started co-writing with John Prine, which was a greater indication of his artistic intentions. Scarecrow, also produced by Gehman, followed, and it was as good as Mellencamp ever got, a fat-free collection of Midwestern rock & roll that treated thwarted dreams of the rust belt as if they were the grist for noir; it helped that Mellencamp still liked to rock, cranking out “Rumbleseat” and “R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.” in between the odes to dying traditions. On The Lonesome Jubilee and Big Daddy, Mellencamp staked his claim upon the fading roots rock, and he’d later make that his specialty on a series of ’90s albums that were always determined to sacrifice user-friendliness for the sake of tradition and ambition. Every one of those albums, from the ’80s peak through his sepia-toned blues and folk for the new millennium, is here in its expanded 2005 incarnation. If the latter-day albums benefit from craft and sobriety, what makes the greatest impression are the earliest albums, the records where he’s intent on being heard fighting to leave his Indiana home, a home to which he’d later return. ― Allmusic

A slick, carefully crafted follow-up to his debut, Rebel Yell was Billy Idol’s catchiest, most consistent fusion of synth-driven new wave pop and hard rock guitar pyrotechnics (courtesy of Steve Stevens). The eerie ballad “Eyes Without a Face” gave Idol his first U.S. Top Ten hit, while “Flesh for Fantasy” and the title track became MTV staples. Like much of Idol’s solo output, it’s all calculated for maximum appeal, but Rebel Yell also works too well not to be an infectiously guilty pleasure. ― Allmusic

A&M’s 32-track retrospective of eccentric singer/songwriter Cat Stevens manages to cram into two discs what 2001’s On the Road to Find Out box set tried to accomplish over four. While not as informative or “rarities”-heavy, Gold tells the artist’s story with utter succinctness, from earnest, post-counterculture semi-hedonist to Islamic recluse. All of the key tracks — digitally remastered from the original two-track masters — are here (“Wild World,” “The Wind,” “Another Saturday Night,” “Moonshadow,” “Where Do the Children Play?”) as well as deeper cuts like “18th Avenue (Kansas City Nightmare)” and all 18 minutes of “Foreigner Suite.” Also included is Stevens’ most recent composition. Originally released as a digital download, the emotional and surprisingly rousing “Indian Ocean” was recorded for Stevens’ Small Kindness charity to benefit children from the Aceh region who were affected by the December 2004 tsunami. ― Allmusic
