The Band’s first album, Music from Big Pink, seemed to come out of nowhere, with its ramshackle musical blend and songs of rural tragedy. The Band, the group’s second album, was a more deliberate and even more accomplished effort, partially because the players had become a more cohesive unit, and partially because guitarist Robbie Robertson had taken over the songwriting, writing or co-writing all 12 songs. Though a Canadian, Robertson focused on a series of American archetypes from the union worker in “King Harvest (Has Surely Come)” and the retired sailor in “Rockin’ Chair” to, most famously, the Confederate Civil War observer Virgil Cane in “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” The album effectively mixed the kind of mournful songs that had dominated Music from Big Pink, here including “Whispering Pines” and “When You Awake” (both co-written by Richard Manuel), with rollicking uptempo numbers like “Rag Mama Rag” and “Up on Cripple Creek” (both sung by Levon Helm and released as singles, with “Up on Cripple Creek” making the Top 40). As had been true of the first album, it was the Band’s sound that stood out the most, from Helm’s (and occasionally Manuel’s) propulsive drumming to Robertson’s distinctive guitar fills and the endlessly inventive keyboard textures of Garth Hudson, all topped by the rough, expressive singing of Manuel, Helm, and Rick Danko that mixed leads with harmonies. The arrangements were simultaneously loose and assured, giving the songs a timeless appeal, while the lyrics continued to paint portraits of 19th century rural life (especially Southern life, as references to Tennessee and Virginia made clear), its sometimes less savory aspects treated with warmth and humor. ― Allmusic

With Ringo, Ringo Starr finally put his solo career in gear in 1973, after serving notice with back-to-back Top Ten singles in 1971 and 1972 that he had more to offer than his eccentric first two solo albums. Ringo was a big-budget pop album produced by Richard Perry and featuring Ringo’s former Beatles bandmates as songwriters, singers, and instrumentalists. On no single track did all four appear, though George Harrison played the guitars on the John Lennon-penned leadoff track “I’m the Greatest,” with Lennon playing piano and singing harmony. But it wasn’t only the guests who made Ringo a success: Ringo advanced his own cause by co-writing two of the album’s Top Ten singles, the number one “Photograph” and “Oh My My.” The album’s biggest hit was a second chart-topper, Ringo’s cover of the old Johnny Burnette hit “You’re Sixteen.” Songs like “Have You Seen My Baby,” a Randy Newman song with guitar by Marc Bolan, and Ringo and Vini Poncia’s “Devil Woman” were just as good as the hits. Ringo’s best and most consistent new studio album, Ringo represented both the drummer/singer’s most dramatic comeback and his commercial peak. The original ten-track 1973 album got even better in 1991 as a 13-track CD reissue, the bonus tracks including the 1971 gold single “It Don’t Come Easy” and its B-side, “Early 1970,” a telling depiction of Ringo’s perspective on the Beatles breakup. ― Allmusic

With her debut recording In the Heat of the Night, Pat Benatar wasted no time starting out of the gate with the furious leadoff track “Heartbreaker,” which solidified her place in a class of women who were taking the rock world by storm in the late ’70s. In the Heat of the Night was an album that obviously had its share of filler, but the one-two punch of “Heartbreaker” and the John Cougar Mellencamp tune “I Need a Lover” leading off the album made enough of a statement to put her on the pop charts. The deflated three tracks following are easily forgettable, especially the sci-fi ’50s ballad “My Clone Sleeps Alone,” but the remainder of the album packs enough grit and solid songwriting (especially the Blondie-esque “So Sincere”) that it remains an impressive debut and foreshadows a glimpse of great things to come. ― Allmusic

Steve Miller had started to essay his classic sound with The Joker, but 1976’s Fly Like an Eagle is where he took flight, creating his definitive slice of space blues. The key is focus, even on an album as stylishly, self-consciously trippy as this, since the focus brings about his strongest set of songs (both originals and covers), plus a detailed atmospheric production where everything fits. It still can sound fairly dated — those whooshing keyboards and cavernous echoes are certainly of their time — but its essence hasn’t aged, as “Fly Like an Eagle” drifts like a cool breeze, while “Take the Money and Run” and “Rock ‘n Me” are fiendishly hooky, friendly rockers. The rest of the album may not be quite up to those standards, but there aren’t any duds, either, as “Wild Mountain Honey” and “Mercury Blues” give this a comfortable backdrop, thanks to Miller’s offhand, lazy charm. Though it may not quite transcend its time, it certainly is an album rock landmark of the mid-’70s and its best moments (namely, the aforementioned singles) are classics of the idiom. ― Allmusic

Elton John gives away his game with not just the title of Wonderful Crazy Night but its artwork. Our hero stands against a garish, colorful backdrop, sporting a grin a mile wide, signaling that he’s once again ready to have fun. The measured melancholy of The Diving Board aside, Elton hasn’t precisely avoided fun since returning to making records for himself, not the charts, with 2001’s Songs from the West Coast, but a certain sobriety crept into the proceedings, particularly when he joined forces with producer T-Bone Burnett for The Union , the 2010 duet album with Leon Russell. Burnett is back for Wonderful Crazy Night and so is John’s touring band, making their first studio appearance since 2006’s The Captain & the Kid. It’s possible to feel the presence of all of Elton’s collaborators: the band brings a bit of a kick to the proceedings and the ever-tasteful Burnett reins things in, keeping things from being too crazy, while lyricist Bernie Taupin schemes with John to keep things from being too wonderful. To be sure, there’s a fair amount of joy and swagger here, particularly on the ebullient opening pair of “Wonderful Crazy Night” and “In the Name of You,” two songs perched between a canny, knowing nostalgia and casual craft. As the record rolls on, seams start to appear, not in the performances or production — this is an album that sounds as comforting as a long candlelit bath — but in the compositions. Often, the tunes appear to be handsome constructions — grand, stately, and well appointed — but their foundations are shaky, constructed from threadbare melodies and words that dissipate not long after they land. It’s an odd mix of lazy and laborious; the songs feeling tossed together in an afternoon and then recorded meticulously. As such, Wonderful Crazy Night never lingers in the imagination — there are no hooks to pull a listener back in for another spin — but it sounds just fine as it plays. ― Allmusic

Michael Jackson wasn’t merely the biggest pop star of his era, shaping the sound and style of the ’70s and ’80s; he was one of the defining stars of the 20th century, a musician who changed the contours of American culture. A preternaturally gifted singer and dancer, Jackson first rose to stardom in 1969 as the 11-year-old frontman for his family’s band, the Jackson 5. As remarkable a run as the Jackson 5 had — at the dawn of the ’70s, each of their first four singles went to number one and they stayed near the top of the charts for the next five years — it all served as a preamble to Jackson’s solo career. Off the Wall, the dazzling 1979 album co-produced by Quincy Jones, announced Jackson as a mature talent, and the singles “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough” and “Rock with You” turned it into a blockbuster. Despite its success, Jackson believed Off the Wall was pigeonholed as an R&B record. Determined to break through this glass ceiling, he reunited with Jones to create Thriller, the 1982 album that shattered every music record on the books. Thriller was designed to appeal to every audience and its diversity was evident by its guests: he enlisted Eddie Van Halen to play guitar on the hard rock of “Beat It” while inviting Paul McCartney to duet on the chipper soft pop tune “The Girl Is Mine.” Jackson also expanded the horizons of soul and dance music, producing pioneering masterpieces like “Billie Jean.” This single provided Thriller with its 1983 breakthrough, thanks in part to its groundbreaking music video, which became the first clip from a black artist to enter steady rotation on the fledgling MTV. Jackson’s smashing of the network’s racial barriers was only one aspect of Thriller’s unprecedented crossover. Seven of its nine songs were Top 10 hits, it earned eight Grammy awards, and topped the Billboard charts for 37 weeks, matching its American success internationally to become the biggest-selling album of all time, earning 32 platinum certifications in the US and moving over 100 million albums worldwide. Such a phenomenal triumph pushed Jackson into the stratosphere and Bad — the eagerly-anticipated 1987 sequel to Thriller, co-produced once again with Quincy Jones — kept him there, generating five number one singles on the Billboard charts and selling 30 million copies internationally, two thirds of which were outside of the US. Jackson parted ways with Jones for 1991’s Dangerous, another global blockbuster. HIStory, a 1995 double-disc set that paired a disc of hits with a new album, produced a couple of international number one singles. Invincible, his 2001 album, turned out to be his last. Health problems culminated in his untimely death in the summer of 2009, but at that point Jackson’s legend was safe: he stood alongside Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Miles Davis, and Bob Dylan as one of the musicians that created the sound of America in the 20th century. ― Allmusic

The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 11th studio album, 2016’s The Getaway, is a sophisticated work of dark-hued maturity that finds the long-running California outfit expanding their sound into nuanced, ’70s-style orchestral soul and funky psychedelia. The album follows the equally adventurous I’m with You (2011) and once again showcases guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who replaced John Frusciante in 2009. A major difference, however, between I’m with You and The Getaway was the band’s choice to work with producer/instrumentalist Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse). This makes The Getaway the first album the Red Hot Chili Peppers have recorded without longtime collaborator Rick Rubin, who has helmed each of the band’s albums since 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik. While the choice helps differentiate The Getaway on a spiritual level, sonically it feels as if the band and Klinghoffer have finally gelled as a complete creative unit. Maybe that’s due to having I’m with You under their belt, or perhaps it’s due to Kiedis having purportedly gone through a painful break-up. Either way, the result is a subtle yet significant advance from I’m with You that feels just that much more focused. Cuts like the disco-inflected title track and the ’80s electro-infused “Go Robot” reveal the band’s knack for coloring their sound in surprising ways. Others, like “We Turn Red” and “This Ticonderoga,” are athletic funk-punk jams. Elsewhere, their chance-taking nature pays dividends, as on the Elton John collaboration “Sick Love.” A laid-back groover featuring John on piano with lyrics by Bernie Taupin, the song is an album standout, bringing to mind ’70s-era Isley Brothers. Similarly, tracks like the flowing “The Longest Wave” and the densely layered “Feasting on the Flowers,” have a melodic, psychedelic quality that feels inspired by the Beatles’ late-’60s period. However, it’s the sprawling, hypnotic album closer, “Dreams of a Samurai,” that seems to pull all of The Getaway’s disparate themes together in a bold, anthemic, fever dream of a song. Beginning with a minor-key piano intro, the song evolves into a roiling cinematic epic with Kiedis’ yearning baritone framed in Klinghoffer’s sweltering layers of wet, echoey guitars, Flea’s rounded, circular basslines, and drummer Chad Smith’s frenetic rhythms. They even make room for a soaring choir in the background that adds to the song’s often malevolent, dream-like atmosphere. At once transformative and self-critical, the song finds Kiedis in a philosophical mood, painting himself as a lonely “metamorphosis samurai” singing, “I’ve lost myself out on the range.” While none of the songs on The Getaway play out as literal stories of Kiedis’ relationship, there is an underlying sense of heartbreak at the core of many of his lyrics. On “Dark Necessities,” he sings, “Spinning knot that is on my heart is like a bit of light in a touch of dark/You got sneak attack from the zodiac/But I see your fire spark.” Ultimately, The Getaway is a nuanced album, rife with journeyman craft and poetry, that proves the Red Hot Chili Peppers still have plenty of their own creative fire. ― Allmusic

HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I (usually shortened to HIStory) is the ninth and penultimate studio album by American recording artist Michael Jackson. It is his fifth studio album released through Epic Records. It was released on June 20, 1995. This is Jackson’s first album on his own label, MJJ Productions, and consists of two discs: the first disc (HIStory Begins) is a compilation of some of his greatest hits from 1979 onward, while the second disc (HIStory Continues) is a studio album composed entirely of new material. The majority of the second disc’s tracks were written and produced by Jackson, often in conjunction with collaborators.

HIStory was Jackson’s return to releasing music following his eighth studio album Dangerous (1991). Many of the 15 songs pertain to the accusations and Jackson’s mistreatment in the media, specifically the tabloids. The songs’ themes include environmental awareness, isolation, greed, suicide and injustice.

Embracing a broad range of pop music that encompassed British Invasion rock, garage rock, disco, reggae, Latin rhythms, and hip-hop, Blondie was the most commercially successful band to emerge from the New York punk/new wave community of the late ’70s. The group was formed in New York City in August 1974 by singer Deborah Harry (b. July 1, 1945, Miami, Florida), formerly of the folk-pop group Wind in the Willows, and guitarist Chris Stein (b. January 5, 1950, Brooklyn, New York) out of the remnants of Harry’s previous group, the Stilettos. The lineup fluctuated over the next year; drummer Clement Burke (b. November 24, 1955, New York) joined in May 1975, and bassist Gary Valentine signed on in August, while keyboard player James Destri (b. April 13, 1954) came on board in October, completing the initial permanent lineup. One of the first bands on the CBGB scene to score a record deal, Blondie released their first album, Blondie, on Private Stock Records in December 1976. In July 1977, Valentine was replaced by Frank Infante. ― Allmusic

Nat King Cole possessed one of the most accessible and appealing voices of any singer in the 1950s. This ballad-oriented set puts the emphasis completely on his voice (there is no piano playing or any hint of his jazz-oriented past) and features Cole accompanied by Gordon Jenkins’ sweet arrangements for a string orchestra. Many other singers might find it difficult to overcome, much less uplift this type of accompaniment, but Cole’s basic and honest delivery works quite well in this setting. Highlights include “The Very Thought of You,” “But Beautiful,” “This Is All I Ask,” “For All We Know,” and “The More I See You.” ― Allmusic

Stage Fright, the Band’s third album, sounded on its surface like the group’s first two releases, Music from Big Pink and The Band, employing the same dense arrangements with their mixture of a deep bottom formed by drummer Levon Helm and bassist Rick Danko, penetrating guitar work by Robbie Robertson, and the varied keyboard work of pianist Richard Manuel and organist Garth Hudson, with Helm, Danko, and Manuel’s vocals on top. But the songs this time around were far more personal, and, despite a nominal complacency, quite troubling. Only “All La Glory,” Robertson’s song about the birth of his daughter, was fully positive. “Strawberry Wine” and “Sleeping” were celebrations of indolence, while “Time to Kill,” as its title implied, revealed boredom while claiming romantic contentment. Several of the album’s later songs seemed to be metaphors for trouble the group was encountering, with “The W.S. Walcott Medicine Show” commenting on the falseness of show business, “Daniel and the Sacred Harp” worrying about a loss of integrity, and the title song talking about the pitfalls of fortune and fame. “The Shape I’m In” was perhaps the album’s most blatant statement of panic. The Band was widely acclaimed after its first two albums; Stage Fright seemed to be the group’s alarmed response, which made it their most nakedly confessional. It was certainly different from their previous work, which had tended toward story-songs set in earlier times, but it was hardly less compelling for that. ― Allmusic

The real breakthrough, as Brian Wilson asserts himself in the studio as both songwriter and arranger on a set of material that was much stronger than Surfin’ Safari. Besides the hit title track and its popular drag-racing flip side (“Shut Down”), this has a lovely, heartbreaking ballad (“Lonely Sea”) and a couple of strong Brian Wilson originals (“The Noble Surfer” and “Farmer’s Daughter”). There are also a surprisingly high quotient of instrumentals (five) that demonstrate that, before session musicians took over most of the parts, the Beach Boys could play respectably gutsy surf rock as a self-contained unit. Indeed, the album as a whole is the best they would make, prior to the late ’60s, as a band that played most of their instruments, rather than as a vehicle for Brian Wilson’s ideas. The LP was a huge hit, vital to launching surf music as a national craze, and one of the few truly strong records to be recorded by a self-contained American rock band prior to the British Invasion. [Surfin’ Safari/Surfin’ U.S.A, a Capitol two-fer CD, combines this and Surfin’ Safari onto one disc, with the addition of three rare bonus cuts from the same era.] ― Allmusic

The soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino’s darkly funny crime classic Pulp Fiction manages to re-create the film’s wildly careening sense of style, violence, and humor by concentrating on the surf music that comprises the bulk of the movie’s incidental music and adding a few sexy oldies integral to the film’s story (“Let’s Stay Together,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” “You Never Can Tell”). Of course, the inclusion of dialogue and Urge Overkill’s seductive cover of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” doesn’t hurt either. ― Allmusic

Mobile Fidelity reissued the Kinks’ first two albums, You Really Got Me and Kinda Kinks, on one gold CD. Although they have their moments, these records are uneven, and most casual fans will prefer to hear the highlights on hits collections. Which means these albums are primarily of interest to devoted fans in the first place, and the steep price tag only further pushes it into collector territory. Is it worth the price? It depends on your point of view. While the remastering on this disc is better than on the initial Rhino CD reissues and should delight audiophiles, the subsequent 1998 Pye remasterings of these albums rival this sound, and those individual discs also contain bonus tracks. If you’re an audiophile, you may prefer this disc. If you’re simply a hardcore fan, the remastered discs are a better choice. ― Allmusic
