The Early Years 1965 – 1972 is a comprehensive 27-disc boxset that sees Pink Floyd delve into their vast music archive to produce a deluxe package that includes 7 individual book-style volumes, featuring much previously unreleased material. The Early Years box set contains unreleased tracks, BBC Radio Sessions, remixes, outtakes and alternative versions over an incredible 11 hours, 45 mins of audio (made up of 130+ tracks) and live and TV performance in over 14 hours of audio-visual material. The content includes over 20 unreleased songs, more than 7 hours of previously unreleased live audio and over 5 hours of rare concert footage, along with 5 meticulously produced 7” singles in replica sleeves, collectable memorabilia, feature films and new sound mixes. Previously unreleased tracks include 1967’s Vegetable Man and In The Beechwoods, which have been mixed for the first time, specially for this release.

The Early Years 1965-1972 will give collectors the opportunity to hear the evolution of the band and witness their part in cultural revolutions from their earliest recordings and studio sessions to the years prior to the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon, one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Little Dots contains more recordings of the under-documented Petit Wazoo Ensemble, which toured at the end of 1972 (previously heard officially on Imaginary Diseases). Again, the sound isn’t pristine here, but it’s quite listenable. The show starts with a very early version of “Cosmik Debris,” but other than that and “Rollo” the material is all new (mostly due to being largely improvised). “Little Dots, Pt. 1” is a previously unreleased piece that features bassist Dave Parlato and drummer Jim Gordon in dialogue, joined by FZ on guitar about halfway though. “Little Dots, Pt. 2” kicks off with a Tony Duran slide solo, and heads into a trombone solo followed by another FZ guitar solo. This version of “Rollo” has the lyrics at the beginning that were cut on Imaginary Diseases before moving into more familiar territory. “Kansas City Shuffle” is a basic blues elevated by a smoking little big band with more great soloing, but the real treat of the set is the piece from Columbia, South Carolina. This one is completely improvised from absolutely nothing, beginning with Frank selecting the players who would begin. It’s amazing how the piece comes together, thanks to some fantastic musicianship, and it’s quite unlike anything else released by Zappa. Little Dots is a great set, but “Columbia, S.C.” is practically worth the price of admission on its own. It’s a real shame that Zappa didn’t continue with this experiment. Little Dots seems to indicate that he was more intrigued by possibilities than repertoire with this band. ― Allmusic

As Keith Richards tells it, the Rolling Stones’ first-ever all-blues album is the result of the band learning how to play in the unfamiliar surroundings of Mark Knopfler’s British Grove Studios. To ease into the new place, the Stones decided to knock out a version of Little Walter’s “Blue and Lonesome” and it sounded good enough that the band decided to cut a few more covers, winding up with a full album of Chicago blues in a few days. The Stones haven’t worked at such swift speed in decades — not since the early ’60s, when they were churning out two albums a year — and much of the appeal of Blue & Lonesome lies in its casualness: by being tossed off, the album highlights how the Stones play together as a band, blending instinct and skill. Blue & Lonesome isn’t a showcase for virtuoso playing — even Eric Clapton’s two smoldering solos are part of the tapestry — but rather a groove record, emphasizing feel and interplay while never losing sight of the song. Such commitment to song is one of the reasons Blue & Lonesome winds up as an unexpected triumph from Mick Jagger. A blues album from the Stones always seemed like a dream project for Keith Richards, who always championed the band’s blues roots, but it’s Jagger who dominates the album, playing searing harp and singing with nuance and power. Always a guarded performer — back in 1974, he scoffed at the notion of letting his feelings flood on the page — Jagger seems freed, pouring heart into the slow burners and uptempo shuffles alike. The rest of the Stones match his commitment and that’s what makes Blue & Lonesome something remarkable. Conceptually, it’s clever — if this winds up being the last Rolling Stones album, it provides a nice bookend to their 1964 debut — but it’s artistically satisfying because it’s the Rolling Stones allowing themselves to simply lay back and play for sheer enjoyment. It’s a rare thing that will likely seem all the more valuable over the years. ― Allmusic

The one unreleased item among Apple/EMI’s exhaustive 2010 John Lennon reissue campaign was Double Fantasy Stripped Down, a revision of the original 1980 album supervised by Yoko Ono and producer Jack Douglas. The intent of this new mix is to give the recording a greater sense of intimacy, but Double Fantasy isn’t Let It Be: it doesn’t have a heavily bootlegged original early incarnation, it only exists in its final form; it’s not an album that was designed as a raw back-to-basics record, it was constructed as a slick studio affair. Stripped Down attempts to take only one coat of varnish off of Double Fantasy, stripping away reverb and backing vocals, dampening some of the brighter colors and adding some studio chatter to give the illusion of eavesdropping on the studio, trimming the length of some tracks slightly, lengthening a couple other imperceptibly, boosting John’s voice to the front of the mix. Apart from “(Just Like) Starting Over,” where the removal of the doo wop backing vocals undercuts the loving oldies homage of the song, the changes are so subtle that they’re felt more than heard, cumulatively not affecting the impact of the album all that much. Ultimately, Stripped Down sounds like a rough mix waiting for all the polish that made Double Fantasy feel like a full, complete album. ― Allmusic

The title of The Real Royal Albert Hall 1966 Concert is a nod to the fact that the famous bootleg known as The “Royal Albert Hall” Concert was actually recorded at the Manchester Free Trade Hall on May 17, 1966. The historical record was corrected when the concert was released as the second installment in Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series in 1998 (it’s labeled the fourth volume, but the first three editions were all rounded up in a 1991 box) , so when it came to release a sampler album from the mammoth 36-disc set The 1966 Live Recordings, the only option was to release The Real Royal Albert Hall 1966 Concert, a show given on May 26, 1996. This double-disc set follows the same contours of the Manchester Free Trade Hall show, offering the acoustic set on the first disc and the electric on the second. Furthermore, the set lists are identical, so The Real Royal Albert Hall 1966 Concert feels a bit like a mirror image of the Manchester Free Trade Hall. Like on Manchester, the acoustic set is quite good, but it’s overshadowed by an electric set that feels wild and alive. Perhaps the performance isn’t as epochal as The “Royal Albert Hall” Concert, but it offers similar thrills and pleasures, and that’s enough for any Dylan fan who wants to hear more music from this rich period. ― Allmusic

Before the arrival of Carlos Santana’s eponymous band, the San Francisco rock scene drew the inspiration for its jam-oriented music mainly from blues, rock, and Eastern modalities. Santana added Latin music to the mix, forever changing the course of rock & roll history. On their groundbreaking debut album, the group mix Latin percussion with driving rock grooves. Santana’s unique guitar style, alternately biting and liquid, vies with the multiple percussionists for the sonic focus.

Unlike later efforts, Santana’s first album features an abundance of loose, collective compositions based on a couple of simple riffs (“Jingo,” “Soul Sacrifice”). This approach allows for Santana and his bandmates to flex their improvisational muscles to fine effect. The high-energy level on Santana is infectious — the laid-back feel of other ’60s San Francisco groups was clearly not for Carlos and co. ― Allmusic

In 1958, Cliff Richard became the first real-deal British rock star when his debut single “Move It” became a massive hit in the U.K. Compared to most of the first crop of English rock & rollers, Richard seemed at least a reasonable approximation of the genuine article imported from the United States. By the time the Beatles changed the game in the early ’60s, Richard had already begun easing into more polished and less threatening sounds, and through most of his career he’s been an all-purpose pop star, dividing his time between secular and Christian music when not busy with television appearances. But Richard still takes a stubborn pride in his status as a British rock pioneer, and at the age of 76 (a mere 58 years after “Move It”), he’s released a collection of first-era rock & roll tunes performed in vintage style titled Just….Fabulous Rock ‘n’ Roll. Recorded in Nashville with a studio band clearly conversant in vintage rock and R&B, Just….Fabulous Rock ‘n’ Roll reveals Richard’s voice is in remarkably good shape for a man his age, and his instrument and his instincts serve him well here. However, this album suffers the same pitfall that trips up so many artists when they tackle an album of covers. Richard clearly enjoys this material, but he can only bring so much that’s new to these songs, and he doesn’t have a strong enough musical personality to keep one from remembering the originals — and competing vocally with the likes of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Jerry Lee Lewis, or Little Richard is a game where very few singers can win. (The album opens with an electronic duet between Richard and Presley on “Blue Suede Shoes,” and it unfortunately makes clear that Richard was called “the British Elvis” more for good hair and stage presence than for being able to convincingly snarl.) And while an updated version of “Move It” shows Richard has his chops, it seems placid next to the classic original. Richard unexpectedly brings a bit of his own spirit to a sly cover of John Lee Hooker’s “Dimples” (he also recruited Peter Frampton to play some strong guitar on the track), and two new songs in the classic rock & roll style fare well because they’re not competing with the listener’s memories. Perhaps Richard should have recorded a whole album of “new” vintage rock numbers; as it is, Just….Fabulous Rock ‘n’ Roll is well crafted, but not an especially inspiring effort in rock nostalgia. ― Allmusic

While he was as innovative as Jimmy Page, as tasteful as Eric Clapton, and nearly as visionary as Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck never achieved the same commercial success as any of those contemporaries, primarily because of the haphazard way he approached his career. After Rod Stewart left the Jeff Beck Group in 1971, Beck never worked with a charismatic lead singer who could have helped sell his music to a wide audience. Furthermore, he was simply too idiosyncratic, moving from heavy metal to jazz fusion within a blink of an eye. As his career progressed, he became more fascinated by automobiles than guitars, releasing only one album during the course of the ’90s. As soundtracks to misguided Beatles-inspired movies go, Across the Universe — the companion piece to Julie Taymor’s pseudo-psychedelic fantasmagoria extravaganza, telling the story of the ’60s through the tunes of the Fab Four — isn’t too embarrassing. Certainly, it lacks the appalling tackiness of Sgt. Pepper and it’s not as stuffy as All This and World War II, but avoiding these two traps isn’t a very high bar to meet, and Across the Universe winds up having its own bewildering gaudy moments. Taymor’s overly designed fantasia is at once too tasteful and too garish, which is an odd combination for an odd movie — and something that may be more gripping onscreen than it is on record, where the flaws of the casting tend to be harder to ignore, at least in musical terms. Curiously enough, that’s as true of the actors as it is the pro singers. It may be expected that Evan Rachel Wood is as charmless on record as she is onscreen, but it’s hard to ignore how Dana Fuchs furiously channels Melissa Etheridge (especially on “Helter Skelter”) to no avail when her performance is isolated as music, but the biggest surprise is that Bono not only looks like a dead ringer for Robin Williams in the film, but he sounds a bit like him too, as he gracelessly slaughters “I Am the Walrus” and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” with his dogged, overly earnest readings. Bono may have no ear for whimsy, but his brave literalism in the face of nonsense fits Taymor’s literal interpretations of the Beatles catalog yet it provides the soundtrack with its only fleeting moments of camp — although T.V. Carpio’s lesbian longing on “I Want to Hold Your Hand” comes close, due to its hazy, soft symphonic makeover — as most of this slides by agreeably enough. Jim Sturgess has the same plainspoken delivery as Ewan MacGregor in Moulin Rouge, which helps in love songs from “All My Loving” to “Something” — and he does a credible job on the rockabilly revamp of “I’ve Just Seen a Face” — and Joe Cocker steals the show with his slinky, funky, spacy version of “Come Together.” And, apart from Bono and Fuchs’ too-strong soulful belting, nothing is distracting — but nothing is particularly memorable as music, either, which is odd because the movie itself is certainly memorable, whether you like it or not. But that just means that Across the Universe falls prey to the curse of jukebox musicals on Broadway — no matter how good or how bad the music is, it ultimately only whets the appetite for the original recordings, which is certainly the case here. ― Allmusic

After goth pioneers the Birthday Party called it quits in 1983, singer/songwriter Nick Cave assembled the Bad Seeds, a post-punk supergroup featuring former Birthday Party guitarist Mick Harvey on drums, ex-Magazine bassist Barry Adamson, and Einstürzende Neubauten guitarist Blixa Bargeld. With the Bad Seeds, Cave continued to explore his obsessions with religion, death, love, America, and violence with a bizarre, sometimes self-consciously eclectic hybrid of blues, gospel, rock, and arty post-punk, although in a more subdued fashion than his work with the Birthday Party. Cave also allowed his literary aspirations to come to the forefront; the lyrics are narrative prose, heavy on literary allusions and myth-making, and take some inspiration from Leonard Cohen. Cave’s gloomy lyrics, dark musical arrangements, and deep baritone voice recall the albums of Scott Walker, who also obsessed over death and love with a frightening passion. However, Cave brings a hefty amount of post-punk experimentalism to Walker’s epic dark pop. ―Allmusic
