A box containing the core Suede albums replicated in cardboard sleeves, the 2014 set contains the following records: Suede, Dog Man Star, Coming Up, Head Music, A New Morning, the 2013 reunion Bloodsports, and the B-sides collection Sci-Fi Lullabies. Many of these albums were available as deluxe editions in 2011 but the versions here are basic, just the proper albums presented as mini-LPs. It’s a handsome endeavor, perhaps alluring to some hardcore fans, but many of those listeners might be satisfied with their expanded editions. Those who aren’t will turn to this nicely assembled set, which gives the core catalog with no muss and no fuss. ― Allmusic

Scottish singer/songwriter Al Stewart has been an amazingly prolific and successful musician across 50 years, working in a dizzying array of stylistic modes and musical genres — in other words, he’s had a real career, and has done it without concerning himself too much about trends and the public taste. He’s been influenced by several notables, to be sure, including his fellow Scot (and slightly younger contemporary) Donovan, as well as Ralph McTell, Bob Dylan, and John Lennon — but apart from a passing resemblance to Donovan vocally, he doesn’t sound quite like anyone else, and has achieved his greatest success across four decades with songs that are uniquely his and impossible to mistake.

Stewart was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1945, and was swept up a decade later in the skiffle boom that took young Britons by storm — he decided to take up guitar after hearing Lonnie Donegan’s music. By the early ’60s, his family was living in Bournemouth, and he joined a local band, the Trappers, in 1963, and was already writing songs by that time. He was an admirer of the Beatles as their fame swept out of Liverpool and across the country, and even managed once to get backstage to meet John Lennon and play a few notes for him, at one of their Bournemouth performances. He studied guitar with Robert Fripp, no less, and later played keyboards in a band called Dave La Caz & the G Men, who managed to open for the Rolling Stones at the outset of the latter’s career in 1963. A true milestone for Stewart took place when Dave La Caz & the G Men recorded one of his songs, “When She Smiled,” in early 1964. ― Allmusic

Gaucho is the seventh studio album by the American jazz rock band Steely Dan, released on November 21, 1980 by MCA Records. The sessions for Gaucho represent the band’s typical penchant for studio perfectionism and obsessive recording technique. To record the album, the band used at least 42 different musicians, spent over a year in the studio, and far exceeded the original monetary advance given by the record label.

During the two-year span in which the album was recorded, the band was plagued by a number of creative, personal and professional problems. MCA, Warner Bros. and Steely Dan had a three-way legal battle over the rights to release the album. After it was released, jazz musician Keith Jarrett threatened the band with legal action for writing credit on the title song “Gaucho”.

Gaucho marked a significant stylistic change for Steely Dan, introducing a more minimal, groove and atmosphere-based format. The harmonically complex chord changes that were a distinctive mark of earlier Steely Dan songs are less prominent on Gaucho, with the record’s songs tending to revolve around a single rhythm or mood. Gaucho proved to be Steely Dan’s final studio album before a 20-year absence from the recording industry.

On this, their second album for A&M, Humble Pie proved that they were not the “minor league Rolling Stones” as people often described them. Led by the soulful Steve Marriot, the Pie was a great band in every sense of the word. Although Peter Frampton elevated himself to superstar status in just a few years, this album proves what an excellent lead guitarist he was. The record has an undeniable live feel to it, due in part to Glyn Johns’ humble yet precise recording, framing the group as if they were a boogie version of the Band. When all of these elements come together on songs such as “Sour Grain” and “Stone Cold Fever,” it’s an unbeatable combination. ― Allmusic

Most rock & roll bands are a tightly wound unit that developed their music through years of playing in garages and clubs around their hometown. Steely Dan never subscribed to that aesthetic. As the vehicle for the songwriting of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, Steely Dan defied all rock & roll conventions. Becker and Fagen never truly enjoyed rock — with their ironic humor and cryptic lyrics, their eclectic body of work shows some debt to Bob Dylan — preferring jazz, traditional pop, blues, and R&B. Steely Dan created a sophisticated, distinctive sound with accessible melodic hooks, complex harmonies and time signatures, and a devotion to the recording studio. With producer Gary Katz, Becker and Fagen gradually changed Steely Dan from a performing band to a studio project, hiring professional musicians to record their compositions. Though the band didn’t perform live after 1974, Steely Dan’s popularity continued to grow throughout the decade, as their albums became critical favorites and their singles became staples of AOR and pop radio stations. It’s often unfair to compare the Rolling Stones to the Beatles but in the case of the group’s mono mixes, it’s instructive. Until the 2009 release of the box set The Beatles in Mono, all of the Fab Four’s mono mixes were out of print. That’s not the case with the Rolling Stones. Most of their ’60s albums — released on Decca in the U.K., London in the U.S. — found mono mixes sneaking onto either the finished sequencing or various singles compilations, so the 2016 box The Rolling Stones in Mono only contains 56 heretofore unavailable mono mixes among its 186 tracks. To complicate things further, the box — which runs 15 discs in its CD version, 16 LPs in its vinyl incarnation — sometimes contains both the British and American releases of a particular title (Out of Our Heads and Aftermath), while others are available in only one iteration (Between the Buttons is only present in the U.K. version). All this is for the sake of expedience: this is the easiest way to get all the mono mixes onto the box with a minimal amount of repetition. To that end, there’s a bonus disc called Stray Cats — with artwork that plays off the censored plain white cover art for the initial pressing of Beggars Banquet — collecting the singles that never showed up on an official album, or at least any of the albums that made the box. Along with the odd decision to have the CD sleeves be slightly larger than a mini-LP replica (they’re as big as a jewel box, so they’re larger than a shrunk vinyl sleeve, a size that’s rarely seen in other releases), this is the only quibble on what is otherwise an excellent set. The sound — remastered again after the 2002 overhaul for hybrid SACDs — is bold and colorful, with the earliest albums carrying a wallop and the latter records feeling like they’re fighting to be heard in two separate channels and all the better for it. If nothing here provides a revelation — none of the mixes are radically different, the way that some Beatles mono sides are — this nevertheless is the best the Rolling Stones have sounded on disc (or on vinyl) and there’s considerable care in this package, from the replications of the sleeves to the extensive notes from David Fricke. Plus, hearing the Stones in mono winds up being a hot wire back toward the ’60s: this feels raw and vibrant, as alive as the band was in the ’60s. ― Allmusic

Not the first posthumous compilation from David Bowie — that would be the lavish box Who Can I Be Now? (1974-1976), which was planned prior to his January 10, 2016 death — Legacy is nevertheless the first designed with his, well, legacy in mind. That much can be gleaned from the title of the compilation, but that’s a bit of a feint since this set essentially repackages the simplest incarnation of a previous Bowie hits compilation, 2014’s Nothing Has Changed. Legacy is available as a single and a double-disc, both carrying sequencings that mirror those on Nothing Has Changed (and both featuring a new mix of “Life on Mars?”). On the single disc, the first 12 songs are the same, then the back sequence is different, discarding “Absolute Beginners” and “Hallo Spaceboy” and concluding with “Where Are We Now?” and “Lazarus.” Similarly, the double-disc has a nearly identical sequencing on its first disc — “Ashes to Ashes” and “Fashion” are swapped — with the differences arriving in the comp’s final six songs, so Heathen’s “Everyone Says Hi” is here, and this concludes with “Lazarus” and “I Can’t Give Everything Away.” In both cases, the Legacy sequencing is slightly better than that on Nothing Has Changed, since it winds up ending on the elegiac note that Bowie gave Blackstar. Still, it’s splitting hairs: the 2016 and 2014 compilations are similar to each other, and they’re also similar to the many Bowie comps that came before, and they’re all just as likely to satisfy and pique interest. ― Allmusic

Gold isn’t the first Donna Summer compilation (it isn’t even the 24th), and you can bet it won’t be the last. Released by the reputable Hip-O, it’s a two-disc set containing an overly generous list of 34 songs, roughly half of which will be of no consequence to those only wanting the big dancefloor hits from the ’70s and ’80s — “I Feel Love,” “Love to Love You Baby,” “Last Dance,” “Hot Stuff,” “On the Radio,” “She Works Hard for the Money,” and the like. All the obvious picks are included, along with just about every other chart entry through 2004. Though this does have the advantage of being an up-to-date anthology as of early 2005, the track listing is too extensive to appeal to those who want a quicker introduction (and there are several of those floating around). This set does score points for snaring “Spring Affair,” an excellent Giorgio Moroder collaboration from 1976 that gets unfairly lost in the shuffle of the more familiar singles. ― Allmusic

It’s a little problematic to put together a compilation of such an album-oriented artist. But unless you’re very deeply into the Leon Russell catalog, this two-CD, 40-track best-of will serve as a retrospective of all that you need, largely covering his work from the first half of the ’70s (a couple of songs from his 1992 Virgin album are also included) and featuring his best-known hits, big and small. It’s a well-done tour through his blend of swamp rock, gospel, and bits of blues and country, with material from eight of his Shelter LPs, including the one he recorded in 1969 as part of the Asylum Choir. Interesting rarities include a 1974 single of “Wild Horses,” a 1970 cover of Dylan’s “She Belongs to Me” that only showed up on a compilation, and a folk-rockish 1965 single for Dot. ― Allmusic

Marc Cohn is one of the finest debut albums of the 1990s, and it brought adult piano pop back to the radio. Every song is well-crafted, and Cohn’s singalong choruses, introspective lyrics, and vocal stylings reveal his ’60s soul and ’70s singer/songwriter influences. His voice is rich, but has a roughness that adds emotion when stretching to the upper end of his range while remaining subtle at the lower end. Marc Cohn shows himself to be an accomplished and versatile songwriter, from the uplifting gospel opener “Walking in Memphis,” the hit for which he is widely known, to the concluding love letter “True Companion.” Cohn has a great ear for melody and a keen eye for detail that immediately grab your attention and reward the listener with repeated plays. The album’s highlight, “Silver Thunderbird,” is a prime example of Cohn’s ability to combine storytelling with an unbelievably catchy chorus. It is not surprising that the songs played on piano work better than those written for guitar; however, the album is surprisingly consistent, even for a debut. This album is worth checking out for any listener who wonders where the tuneful pop and soul of the Big Chill era went. ― Allmusic
