Originally a hard-driving rocker in the vein of fellow Michigan garage rockers the Rationals and Mitch Ryder, Bob Seger developed into one of the most popular heartland rockers over the course of the ’70s. Combining the driving charge of Ryder’s Detroit Wheels with Stonesy garage rock and devotion to hard-edged soul and R&B, he crafted a distinctively American sound. While he never attained the critical respect of his contemporary Bruce Springsteen, Seger did develop a dedicated following through constant touring with his Silver Bullet Band. Following several years of missed chances and lost opportunities, Seger finally achieved a national audience in 1976 with the back-to-back release of Live Bullet and Night Moves. After the platinum success of those albums, Seger retained his popularity for the next two decades, releasing seven Top Ten, platinum-selling albums in a row. ― Allmusic

On The Pretender, Jackson Browne took a step back from the precipice so well defined on his first three albums, but doing so didn’t seem to make him feel any better. Employing a real producer, Jon Landau, for the first time, Browne made what sounded like a real contemporary rock record, but this made his songs less effective; the ersatz Mexican arrangement of “Linda Paloma” and the bouncy second half of “Daddy’s Tune,” with its horn charts and guitar solo, undercut the lyrics. The man who had delved so deeply into life’s abyss on his earlier albums was in search of escape this time around, whether by crying (“Here Come Those Tears Again”), sleeping (“Sleep’s Dark and Silent Gate”), or making peace with estranged love ones (“The Only Child,” “Daddy’s Tune”). None of it worked, however, and when Browne came to the final track — traditionally the place on his albums where he summed up his current philosophical stance — he delivered “The Pretender,” a cynical, sarcastic treatise on moneygrubbing and the shallow life of the suburbs. Primarily inner-directed, the song’s defeatist tone demands rejection, but it is also a quintessential statement of its time, the post-Watergate ’70s; dire as that might be, you had to admire that kind of honesty, even as it made you wince. ― Allmusic

This latest compilation of Jim’s music is both interesting and valid in that it combines songs that appeared on his three hit albums with earlier compositions that were works in progress of a singer/songwriter finding his voice and an artist searching for directon.

Songs like “Mississippi Lady”, “Stone Walls” and “Country Girl” cast Jim as the observer/storyteller in a country music setting. “King’s Song” and “Which Way Are You Going” are based on 60’s social protest. “Hey Tomorrow” is a transitional piece that shows the beginning of the vulnerability that became the hallmark of his now classic songs.

The inclusion of this early work with some much loved album cuts make this compilation both enjoyable and educational.

According to Billboard chart statistics, Chicago is second only to the Beach Boys as the most successful American rock band of all time, in terms of both albums and singles. Judged by album sales alone, as certified by the R.I.A.A., the band does not rank quite so high, but it is still among the Top Ten best-selling U.S. groups ever. If such statements of fact surprise, that’s because Chicago has been singularly underrated since the beginning of its long career, both because of its musical ambitions — to the musicians, rock is only one of several styles of music to be used and blended, along with classical, jazz, R&B, and pop — and because of its refusal to emphasize celebrity over the music. The result has been that many critics have consistently failed to appreciate its music and that its media profile has always been low. At the same time, however, Chicago has succeeded in the ways it intended to. From the beginning of its emergence as a national act, it has been able to fill arenas with satisfied fans. And beyond the impressive sales and chart statistics, its music has endured, played constantly on the radio and instantly familiar to tens of millions. ― Allmusic

Five vintage albums from ’70s hitmakers the Doobie Brothers are included in this special box set. Released in 1971, The Doobie Brothers was the group’s first album, and finds the Doobies beginning to work out the sound that would make them famous. Livin’ on the Fault Line from 1977 would prove to be their last album with guitarist and founder Tom Johnston, and found them expanding their jazz influences. Issued in 1978, Minute by Minute featured two major hits, the title cut and “What a Fool Believes,” and with Michael McDonald handling all the lead vocals, the group refined its R&B sound and came up with a commercial blockbuster. The hit “Real Love” is included on 1980’s One Step Closer, which would prove to be the Doobies’ last studio effort with McDonald as lead singer. The Doobie Brothers set out on a final series of live dates after announcing their impending breakup, and 1983’s Farewell Tour features 17 of the band’s best-known songs performed on-stage during the last shows (though the group would reunite without McDonald in 1989). ― Allmusic

Fusing the complexity of British prog rock with an American heartland sound representative of their name, Kansas were among the most popular bands of the late ’70s, with many of their hits becoming staples of AOR radio playlists. Formed in Topeka in 1970, the founding members of the group — guitarist Kerry Livgren, bassist Dave Hope, and drummer Phil Ehart — first played together while in high school; with the 1971 addition of classically trained violinist Robbie Steinhardt, they changed their name to White Clover, reverting back to the Kansas moniker for good upon the 1972 arrivals of vocalist/keyboardist Steve Walsh and guitarist Richard Williams. The group spent the early part of the decade touring relentlessly and struggling for recognition; initially, their mix of boogie and prog rock baffled club patrons, but in due time they established a strong enough following to win a record deal with the Kirshner label. ― Allmusic

The Early Years 1965–1972 is a compilation box set by Pink Floyd released on 11 November 2016. It was officially announced 28 July 2016. The set includes seven volumes with CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, vinyl, and memorabilia. It contains early non-album singles plus unreleased studio and live recordings. Volumes 1–6 will be available for individual sale in 2017, while Volume 7 Continu/ation will be exclusive to the box set. A two-disc compilation titled The Early Years – Cre/ation was also made available.

On 5 November 2016, the official Pink Floyd Facebook page announced that the set would also include another extra disc—Live at Pompeii on CD. This was due to an error where the Pompeii CD had been placed inside the 1972: Obfusc/ation box instead of the 2016 mix of the Obscured by Clouds album. This meant that the Obscured by Clouds album had to be included separately in a plastic wallet; the reverse of the wallet states “Replacement CD disc for Obfusc/ation […] (Stereo 2016 mix of Pink Floyd ‘Live at Pompeii’ CD supplied in error)”

On his debut album, Randy Newman sounded as if he was still getting used to the notion of performing his own songs in the studio (despite years of cutting songwriting demos), but apparently he was a pretty quick study, and his second long-player, 12 Songs, was a striking step forward for Newman as a recording artist. While much of Randy Newman was heavily orchestrated, 12 Songs was cut with a small combo (Ry Cooder and Clarence White take turns on guitar), leaving a lot more room for Newman’s Fats Domino-gone-cynical piano and the bluesier side of his vocal style, and Randy sounds far more confident and comfortable in this context. And Newman’s second batch of songs were even stronger than his first (no small accomplishment), rocking more and grooving harder but losing none of their intelligence and careful craft in the process. “Have You Seen My Baby?” and “Mama Told Me Not to Come” are a pair of sly, updated New Orleans-style rockers (both of which would be much-covered in the coming years); “Let’s Burn Down the Cornfield” and “Suzanne” are subtly ominous tales of love and sex; “Yellow Man” was an early meditation on one of Newman’s favorite themes, the absurdity of racial prejudice (which he would also glance at in his straight-but-twisted cover of “Underneath the Harlem Moon”); and “My Old Kentucky Home” is a hilarious and quite uncharitable look at life in the deep South (another theme that would pop up in his later work). Newman’s humor started getting more acidic with 12 Songs, but here even his most mordant character studies boast a recognizable humanity, which often make his subjects both pitiable and all the more loathsome. Superb material brilliantly executed, 12 Songs was Randy Newman’s first great album, and is still one of his finest moments on record. ― Allmusic

Bob Seger recorded the bulk of Night Moves before Live Bullet brought him his first genuine success, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it’s similar in spirit to the introspective Beautiful Loser, even if it rocks harder and longer. Throughout much of the album, he’s coming to grips with being on the other side of 30 and still rocking. He floats back in time, turning in high-school memories, remembering when wandering down “Mainstreet” was the highlight of an evening, covering a rockabilly favorite in “Mary Lou.” Stylistically, there’s not much change since Beautiful Loser, but the difference is that Seger and his Silver Bullet Band — who turn in their first studio album here — sound intense and ferocious, and the songs are subtly varied. Yes, this is all hard rock, but the acoustic ballads reveal the influence of Dylan and Van Morrison, filtered through a Midwestern sensibility, and the rockers reveal more of Seger’s personality than ever. Seger may have been this consistent before (on Seven, for example), but the mood had never been as successfully varied, nor had his songwriting been as consistent, intimate, and personal. Thankfully, this was delivered to a mass audience eager for Seger, and it not only became a hit, but one of the universally acknowledged high points of late-’70s rock & roll. And, because of his passion and craft, it remains a thoroughly terrific record years later. ― Allmusic

The Essential Collection: 1965–1997 is a box-set compilation album from The Carpenters that, with the exception of a few track changes, is essentially the same as the 1991 From the Top set. Coming in at four discs and 73 songs, this album is one of the biggest of all Carpenters compilation sets. The songs from this box set are everything from the Richard Carpenter Trio recordings from 1965 to their biggest hits in the early 1970s to the last song ever recorded by the Carpenters, “Now”.

Soundgarden’s finest hour, Superunknown is a sprawling, 70-minute magnum opus that pushes beyond any previous boundaries. Soundgarden had always loved replicating Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath riffs, but Superunknown’s debt is more to mid-period Zep’s layered arrangements and sweeping epics. Their earlier punk influences are rarely detectable, replaced by surprisingly effective appropriations of pop and psychedelia. Badmotorfinger boasted more than its fair share of indelible riffs, but here the main hooks reside mostly in Chris Cornell’s vocals; accordingly, he’s mixed right up front, floating over the band instead of cutting through it. The rest of the production is just as crisp, with the band achieving a huge, robust sound that makes even the heaviest songs sound deceptively bright. But the most important reason Superunknown is such a rich listen is twofold: the band’s embrace of psychedelia, and their rapidly progressing mastery of songcraft. Soundgarden had always been a little mind-bending, but the full-on experiments with psychedelia give them a much wider sonic palette, paving the way for less metallic sounds and instruments, more detailed arrangements, and a bridge into pop (which made the eerie ballad “Black Hole Sun” an inescapable hit). That blossoming melodic skill is apparent on most of the record, not just the poppier songs and Cornell-penned hits; though a couple of drummer Matt Cameron’s contributions are pretty undistinguished, they’re easy to overlook, given the overall consistency. The focused songwriting allows the band to stretch material out for grander effect, without sinking into the pointlessly drawn-out muck that cluttered their early records. The dissonance and odd time signatures are still in force, though not as jarring or immediately obvious, which means that the album reveals more subtleties with each listen. It’s obvious that Superunknown was consciously styled as a masterwork, and it fulfills every ambition. ― Allmusic

Superunknown was a breakthrough in many ways. Not only did the album bring Soundgarden a new audience, it dramatically expanded their vision, as well as their accomplishments. If Down on the Upside initially seems a retreat from the grand, layered textures of Superunknown, let it sink in. The sound of Down on the Upside is certainly more immediate, but the band hasn’t returned to the monstrous, unfocused wailing of Louder Than Love. Instead, they’ve retained their ambitious song structures, neo-psychedelic guitar textures, and winding melodies but haven’t dressed them up with detailed production. Consequently, Down on the Upside is visceral as well as cerebral — “Rhinosaur” goes for the gut, while “Pretty Noose” is updated, muscular prog rock. Down on the Upside is a deceptive album — it might seem like nothing more than heavy metal, but a closer listen reveals that Soundgarden haven’t tempered their ambitions at all. ― Allmusic

Weighing in at a generous 21 tracks, Atco’s The Beat Goes On: The Best of Sonny & Cher is the definitive portrait of Sonny & Cher in their glory years. The duo left Atco in the late ’60s, staging a comeback on Kapp/MCA Records in the early ’70s , which means latter-day hits such as”All I Ever Need Is You” and “A Cowboy’s Work Is Never Done” aren’t here, but chances are most listeners won’t even notice, since all the big songs are here: “I Got You Babe,” “Laugh at Me,” “Baby Don’t Go,” “Just You,” “But You’re Mine,” “What Now, My Love?,” “The Revolution Kind,” “Little Man,” and “The Beat Goes On.” True, the collection may run a little long for some tastes, but there’s no denying that it has all that a casual or dedicated fan could ever want from a Sonny & Cher compilation. ― Allmusic
