Monk’s Dream is the Columbia Records debut release featuring the Thelonious Monk Quartet: Monk (piano), Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), John Ore (bass), and Frankie Dunlop (drums). Jazz scholars and enthusiasts alike also heralded this combo as the best Monk had been involved with for several years. Although he would perform and record supported by various other musicians, the tight — almost telepathic — dimensions that these four shared has rarely been equalled in any genre. By the early ’60s, bop had become considered passé by artists as well as fans looking for the next musical trend. This is coupled with the fact that discerning Monk fans would have undoubtedly recognized many of these titles from several live recordings issued at the end of his tenure on Riverside. Not to belabor the point, however, but precious few musicians understood the layer upon layer of complexities and challenges that Monk’s music created. On tracks such as “Five Spot Blues” and “Bolivar Blues,” Rouse and Dunlop demonstrate their uncanny abilities by squeezing in well-placed instrumental fills, while never getting hit by the unpredictable rhythmic frisbees being tossed about by Monk. Augmenting the six quartet recordings are two solo sides: “Just a Gigolo” and “Body and Soul.” Most notable about Monk’s solo work is how much he retained the same extreme level of intuition throughout the nearly two decades that separate these recordings from his initial renderings in the late ’40s. Equipped with a warehouse of component Moog equipment, four phase shifters, a Roland space echo unit, a sitar (!), and other period electronic gear, Tomita re-enters the Russian classical repertoire with his take on Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite (1919 version). As unique as Tomita’s idiom was (and still is), this transcription is rather conservative for him, not as startling nor as playful as those of Debussy and Mussorgsky on his first two RCA albums. The by-now-familiar drifting, spacy, phasey Tomita treatment works best on the slower numbers in the suite, like “The Round of the Princesses,” the “Berceuse,” and the disembodied majesty of the opening of the “Finale.” But the “Dance of the Firebird” and “Infernal Dance” aren’t nearly as dynamic or colorful as any of Stravinsky’s orchestral versions. For companion pieces, Tomita returned to the composers who brought him here, a gorgeous, pitch-bending version of Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” and a ponderous, electronic choir-laden version of Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain.” In 2000, the Debussy “Prelude” was appropriately grafted onto the High Performance CD reissue of Snowflakes Are Dancing, now with enveloping surround sound as a way of approximating the four-channel version of the LP. ― Allmusic

Baby I’m-A Want You is Bread’s best album, showcasing its soft and hard sides (yes, Bread had a hard side) at their respective peaks. “Mother Freedom,” with its crunchy James Griffin guitar solo, and the superb soft rocker “Baby I’m-A Want You” made a brilliant opening which the rest of the album had a hard time matching. The songs range from wistful sentimentality (“Diary”) to spirited protest (“This Isn’t What the Government,” a poor man’s “Taxman” with an anti-war slant). The high points outnumber the flat spots, and the playing is very polished (with unexpected hard rock flourishes on “Dream Lady”), but this is still a ’70s period piece. Reissued in 1996. ― Allmusic

As the lead singer for the Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger virtually invented the concept of the rock & roll frontman. Taking his cues from soul singers, bluesmen, and Elvis Presley, Jagger crafted a magnetic, carnal persona that retained its charisma even after it was mimicked and expanded by countless singers who followed in his footsteps. He may have been surrounded by disciples, but Jagger never left the spotlight, touring with the Rolling Stones until he was in his seventies. Unlike his lifelong collaborator Keith Richards, Jagger always seemed eager to explore territory outside of the Stones, releasing a solo single called “Memo from Turner” in 1970 and launching a full-fledged solo career in 1985, 21 years after the band’s debut. When he released She’s the Boss, it appeared that the Stones may have been approaching the end of their career, but it soon transpired that Jagger’s solo career would run concurrently with that of the band’s. Over the ensuing decades, he released a string of solo albums and formed a supergroup called SuperHeavy with David A. Stewart, and while none of these projects commanded the attention that the Rolling Stones achieved, they nevertheless showcased a restless talent with an interest in pop, dance, and world music. ― Allmusic

BGM stands for “background music,” and one could be mistaken for thinking that this is an album of ambient-sounding tracks. Instead, it’s a continuation of YMO’s techno aesthetic, focusing more on Takahashi’s distorted vocals and similarly liquid synth sounds, which give much of the album a melancholic air. There’s also the sense of a group rushing to put out another album (close on the heels of Xoo Multiplies). One of Sakamoto’s efforts (“1000 Knives”) comes from his 1978 solo album, revisited here as a twisted blurp of an instrumental; the other (“Happy End”) is all atmosphere and no substance. And YMO’s attempt to understand rap (“Rap Phenomena”) is as plodding as it is embarrassing. However, there are some standout tracks on side two: “Cue” by Hosono and Takahashi is a very assured ballad, given sufficient frisson by its galloping synth line and strangely programmed drums; “U•T” is a Kraftwerk-ian instrumental charged with menace and speed; and “Loom” finally gets to a calm resting place of dripping water, floating electronics, and a Eno-esque atmosphere. If only the first half was a good as the second. ― Allmusic

Widening their vision of synth-pop to include the darker strains of urban/R&B as well as a few vocals indebted to Roxy Music, 1981’s Technodelic proved a high-quality album that showed Yellow Magic Orchestra had the talent and inspiration to grow beyond Kraftwerk-derived electronic pop heavy on the novelty but a bit light on bending genres. Though they aren’t exactly melancholy, “Neue Tanz” and “Pure Jam” distinguish themselves through a clever use of synth and effects rather than through the simplistic melodies of previous work. There are some acknowledgements to acoustic music (such as the piano on “Stairs”), but for the most part YMO pursues a new direction with the same synthesizers they’d been using previously. ― Allmusic

Not long after releasing the dark and contemplative Schmilco in 2016, Wilco went on hiatus, and as the members involved themselves in various projects, leader Jeff Tweedy released his first two proper solo albums, 2018’s Warm and its 2019 sibling Warmer. Where Schmilco possessed a subtle but clear undercurrent of dread, Warm and Warmer were full of warmth and compassion, however wary, as if to offer solace after the band peeked into the abyss. After returning to the stage in mid-2019, Wilco have staked out a middle ground between Schmilco and Warm/Warmer on their 13th album. 2019’s Ode to Joy comes from the noisier and more inward-looking side of the band’s personality — this music will probably not go over at your next barbecue or game night — but as the lyrics contemplate a struggle between crippling fear and anxiety and a need to believe in something better, the music testifies to the strength of this band as they build something truly compelling and intelligent out of even the most seemingly formless soundscapes. If anyone feared that Wilco might sound at all tentative or rusty after a two-year break, Ode to Joy will put them at ease; the performances here are rarely flashy in any way, but each member fills their space with taste and intelligence. They blend so well as an ensemble that sometimes it’s hard to tell where one instrument ends and another begins, though Glenn Kotche’s percussion, which adds drama and color along with a flawless rhythmic sense, and Nels Cline, whose guitar work feels inspired even when he’s just hovering in the background, feel like firsts among equals. As for the frontman, Tweedy seems more confident as a vocalist since spending some time as a solo act, though that doesn’t mean he’s become histrionic. On opening tracks “Bright Leaves” and “Before Us,” his performance is the definition of a man seeing the walls closing in, and in the closing numbers “Hold Me Anyway” and “An Empty Corner” he reminds us that no matter what happens in the larger world, we still have one another, and that might just be enough. Ode to Joy reveals that after their sabbatical, Wilco are more than willing to explore the boundaries of their music, and they do so with the confidence and sense of daring that have marked their best work from Being There onward. ― Allmusic

The inherent friendliness of Moonlight, Mistletoe and You buoys the first holiday album from veteran blues singer Keb’ Mo’ through its periodic shifts in tone and style. Keb’ Mo’ has long been known for dabbling in a variety of different American roots music, so the intermingling of blues, jazz, and Tin Pan Alley pop comes as no surprise. His easy touch ties together these shifts in sound, but his warmth can sometimes be suppressed by the crisp, clean production that veers just a little bit too close to antiseptic on occasion. Despite the digital gloss of “Merry Merry Christmas” and the bouncy “Better Everyday,” Moonlight, Mistletoe and You still winds up as a cozy listen, all due to Keb’ Mo”s emphasis on sweetness and good humor. Janowski’s Wagner cycle arrives at Lohengrin and by this point in the series some things can safely be relied on. The first is Janowski’s penchant for fast tempi which, in this context, carries the welcome advantage that each act fits onto one disc. It seldom feels rushed, however. When he broadens out it is for the more famously contemplative moments, such as In fernem Land or Einsam in truben tagen. In fact, the dawn interlude in the third act begins remarkably slowly but gathers pace as it develops, an effect that not everyone will enjoy.

The other normally dependable advantages are slightly less reliable this time around. One is the beauty of the orchestral playing, which is still extraordinary. However, it takes a while for the shimmer effect to set in. The divided strings of the prelude are ever so slightly shaky in the opening bars and I couldn’t really relax into it until the entry of the woodwinds. The scenes surrounding Lohengrin’s entrance in Act 1, however, are wonderful, as is the playing around In fernem Land. The string tone for the opening of Act 2 is wonderfully dark. The other advantage is the quality of the recorded sound. It’s very good, bringing clarity and light to the string and wind sound especially. However, the brass feel slightly recessed this time around: the important trumpet fanfares at the climax of the prelude are difficult to hear, and most of the big climaxes are a little underplayed, including the prelude to Act 3. It’s most damaging in the final bars of the second act where the theme of the forbidden question should thunder out on the brass but here struggles to make itself heard above the general orchestral texture which can come across as slightly thick and muddy. Perhaps I’m only noticing these flaws because these aspects have been so excellent in other instalments of the series, but it’s a pity that the magic is less forthcoming this time around. ― musicweb-international.com

Camel’s classic period started with The Snow Goose, an instrumental concept album based on a novella by Paul Gallico. Although there are no lyrics on the album — two songs feature wordless vocals — the music follows the emotional arc of the novella’s story, which is about a lonely man named Rhayader who helps nurse a wounded snow goose back to health with the help of a young girl called Fritha he recently befriended. Once the goose is healed, it is set free, but Fritha no longer visits the man because the goose is gone. Later, Rhayader is killed in battle during the evacuation of Dunkirk. The goose returned during the battle, and it is then named La Princesse Perdue, symbolizing the hopes that can still survive even during the evils of war. With such a complex fable to tell, it is no surprise that Camel keep their improvisational tendencies reined in, deciding to concentrate on surging, intricate soundscapes that telegraph the emotion of the piece without a single word. And even though The Snow Goose is an instrumental album, it is far more accessible than some of Camel’s later work, since it relies on beautiful sonic textures instead of musical experimentation. ― Allmusic

Abandoning the lovely soundscapes of Snow Goose, Camel delved into layered guitar and synthesizers similar to those of Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here on the impressive Moonmadness. Part of the reason behind the shift in musical direction was the label’s insistence that Camel venture into more commercial territory after the experimental Snow Goose, and it is true that the music on Moonmadness is more akin to traditional English progressive rock, even though it does occasionally dip into jazz-fusion territory with syncopated rhythms and shimmering keyboards. Furthermore, the songs are a little more concise and accessible than those of its predecessor. That doesn’t mean Camel has abandoned art. Moonmadness is indeed a concept album, based loosely on the personalities of each member — “Chord Change” is Peter Bardens, “Air Born” is Andy Latimer, “Lunar Sea” is Andy Ward and “Another Night” is Doug Ferguson. Certainly, it’s a concept that is considerably less defined than that of Snow Goose, and the music isn’t quite as challenging, yet that doesn’t mean that Moonmadness is devoid of pleasure. In fact, with its long stretches of atmospheric instrumentals and spacy solos, it’s quite rewarding. ― Allmusic
