Baby I’m-A Want You is Bread’s best album, showcasing its soft and hard sides (yes, Bread had a hard side) at their respective peaks. “Mother Freedom,” with its crunchy James Griffin guitar solo, and the superb soft rocker “Baby I’m-A Want You” made a brilliant opening which the rest of the album had a hard time matching. The songs range from wistful sentimentality (“Diary”) to spirited protest (“This Isn’t What the Government,” a poor man’s “Taxman” with an anti-war slant). The high points outnumber the flat spots, and the playing is very polished (with unexpected hard rock flourishes on “Dream Lady”), but this is still a ’70s period piece. Reissued in 1996. ― Allmusic

Motown is the black-owned Great Lakes R&B label synonymous with the ’60s but before their reign was Chicago’s Vee-Jay Records, ruling the charts for nearly a decade prior to the rise of the Detroit imprint. The tale of Vee-Jay has been told before in a variety of compilations, but Charly’s 2014 box set Chicago Hit Factory: The Vee-Jay Story 1953-1966 is easily the most comprehensive chronicle, lasting ten discs and encompassing all of the chapters in the label’s wild history. This includes singles Vee-Jay licensed from a variety of different sources, including blues sides by Elmore James on Fury and, notably, the first Beatles singles to be released in America, “Love Me Do” and “P.S. I Love You.” Charly takes advantage of the shifting licensing rules of the new millennium to include both of these singles along with the Four Seasons hits that often haven’t shown up on other Vee-Jay anthologies but, really, that’s just the tip of the iceberg on this exhaustive set. Every sound and style the label issued is here, divided into three discs of big hits and then a disc apiece for doo wop, blues, R&B, soul, regional hits, gospel, and jazz. Sequencing the ten discs like this helps put Vee-Jay’s diversity into perspective as well as emphasizing who their true hitmakers were: the laconic bluesman Jimmy Reed, the ebullient Dee Clark, the smooth assured Jerry Butler, genial Gene Chandler, and exuberant Betty Everett. All have almost all of their hits featured and there is plenty of room for doo wop groups like the Spaniels and the Dells, lots of space for soul and John Lee Hooker, and other music that sold better on LP than 45. Charly’s presentation perhaps leaves a little to be desired — these masters maybe could sound better and the whole package feels as if it was constructed on a budget — but there is a wealth of important music that is tremendously compelling and entertaining in this box. That it’s available at a good price is just a nice bonus — it’d be worthwhile at twice the retail. ― Allmusic

A new release, “Golden Age of Crossover” (SACD/CD), is added to the “Critics Series” that have been produced as reference discs for the auditioning of audio components and are one of our well-received Reference Record Collections. “Golden Age of Crossover” is a compilation of fusion music selected by an audio critic, Yoshio Obara. With the cooperation of JVCKENWOOD Victor Entertainment, Obara has carefully chosen 13 tunes of Japanese fusion—all of which are his favorites from school days— from its music list, especially from those recognized their excellence in sound creation. What is special about this disc is that the chosen tunes, which were issued from 1977 to 1987, include the ones composed by overseas artists or the ones recorded at the studio abroad, and in some tunes Japanese and overseas artists are playing vying each other. For these backdrops, the disc has “Crossover” for its name.

Over the past four years, Van Morrison has recorded no less than six albums. Most have been populated with excellent covers of blues, soul, and jazz standards with a smattering of original numbers woven in between. Three Chords and the Truth (titled after Harlan Howard’s famous description of country music), is his first collection of all-new original material since 2016’s Keep Me Singing. Morrison penned 14 of the 15 songs here. In addition to his road band, he recruited old friend, acoustic jazz guitarist Jay Berliner (who played on Astral Weeks) for some of the sessions. The album’s sound is warm, punchy, and immediate, despite being cut in five studios.

Opener “March Winds in February” boasts a punchy upright bassline, bubbling B-3 organ, brushed snares, and traded lead guitar lines between Berliner’s acoustic and Dave Keary’s electric. It crisscrosses Celtic R&B, gospel, and jazz; it’s timeless Morrison. “Fame Will Eat the Soul” is a raw-sounding duet with the Righteous Brothers’ Bill Medley, who out-growls the singer. “Dark Night of the Soul” references the metaphorical spirituality and hypnotic musicality that informed his records between 1980’s Common One and 1991’s Hymns to the Silence. “In Search of Grace” and “Read Between the Lines,” with their bumping, jazzy calypso B-3s, find Morrison digging deep into the memorial previous with grooving authority. The cultural indictment in “Nobody in Charge” is fueled by the same vamp that drove “These Dreams of You” so many years ago. When Morrison takes on the jazz-blues in “You Don’t Understand,” he’s supported by a meaty upright bass and a brooding organ. His singing wields the tension and authority of an apocalyptic gospel singer, and the tune purposely contains a direct harmonic nod to Bob Dylan’s “Ballad of a Thin Man.”

We hear Celtic Soul Brother No. 1 on “Does Love Conquer All,” and the skiffle and rockabilly devotee delivering the choogling boogie of “Early Days.” Morrison co-wrote the tender balladic waltz “If We Wait for Mountains” with fellow OBE honoree, lyricist Don Black. The title track is an excellent example of fingerpopping, hard-swinging R&B. “Bags Under My Eyes” is a humorous take on the perils of the road, delivered as a honky tonk waltz. “Days Gone By” completely reimagines — lyrically and musically — “Auld Lang Syne” by using bits of the original melody in a modern paean to acceptance and aspiration. Given Three Chords and the Truth’s 70-minute run time, there’s a lot to digest, but it’s worth it. Morrison is in excellent voice throughout; his energy is kinetic and his songwriting — even when he’s complaining — is fresh, humorous, soulful, and insightful. A natural companion to Keep Me Singing, this is Morrison at his best. ― Allmusic

Depending on your count (namely, whether you choose to include 1999’s I Wanna Be Santa Claus or not), What’s My Name is the 20th album Ringo Starr has released as a solo artist, but the real telling part of that statistic is how eight of those records have been released in the 21st century. During the 2000s and 2010s, Ringo has been treating the recording studio like an extension of his All-Starr Band, inviting his celebrity friends in to have a laugh while playing a few tunes. Not much has changed with What’s My Name, at least on the surface. Starr once again sits alone in the producer’s chair, and he corrals a group that features a lot of familiar faces, including Joe Walsh, Steve Lukather, Nathan East, Benmont Tench, Dave Stewart, and Colin Hay. Ringo isn’t shy about evoking the ghost of the Beatles, covering John Lennon’s “Grow Old with Me,” a choice that is a good bit more sensitive than a ham-fisted electronic reading of “Money” filled with clanky drum machines and vocoders. Grappling with the mayhem of modernity is an underlying theme of What’s My Name, surfacing explicitly on the opening “Gotta Get Up to Get Down” when Joe Walsh announces himself by blustering “Everybody’s on the internet, what’s up with that?” Such grumbling and griping is drowned out by the good vibes. Ringo admits on the title track, “I can’t get enough of peace and love/This is what I’ve come to understand,” and there’s a sense of gratitude flowing throughout What’s My Name, apparent in “Magic,” “Better Days,” “Life Is Good,” “Send Love, Spread Peace,” and “Thank God for Music.” Often, his good cheer comes across as corny, a situation accentuated by the big, bright surfaces — it’s the work of pros who are working at home, seeking only to please themselves. As the spirits are sunny and the songs tuneful, it’s hard not to find What’s My Name ingratiating, even though much of the album is so good-intentioned, it’s silly. ― Allmusic

Disc 1 finds Dylan in Columbia’s Studio A in Nashville recording alternate versions of compositions written for John Wesley Harding (October 17 and November 6, 1967) and Nashville Skyline (February 13-14, 1969) while introducing a new song “Western Road” (a Nashville Skyline outtake). This set is presented differently to The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society box set; Arthur is it is smaller, seven-inch square, three-inch deep package, which holds four CDs, four seven-inch singles, a book and some other ‘bits’.

The first two CDs offer the album in newly remastered mono and stereo versions (both with seven bonus tracks) while the third disc features music from a ‘lost’ Dave Davies solo album. CD 4 offers a collection of demos, rehearsals, theatrical versions and remixes. In total there are 81 tracks – five previously unreleased and 28 previously unreleased ‘versions’.

The four seven-inch singles feature international sleeve art. They are: Drivin’, Victoria, Shangri-La and Hold My Hand (Dave Davies solo).

John Coltrane had yet to move into his modal post-bop phase in 1958 when he recorded a session for Prestige Records on July 11 with trumpeter/flügelhornist Wilbur Harden, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb, the results of which were issued in 1962 as Standard Coltrane. His groundbreaking modal work with Miles Davis on Kind of Blue was still a few months into the future, which makes this set more historical than vital or transitional, although it’s pleasant enough, featuring Coltrane on several standards, including a ten-plus-minute version of “Invitation.” Other Coltrane material from this 1958 Prestige era ended up on the albums Stardust (1963) and Bahia (1965), and all of it, including these four tracks, has been collected on The Stardust Session from Prestige Records, which is probably the way to go. ― Allmusic

According to the original liner notes, this 1959 Willie Dixon session was cut during a two hour span in between flights. This certainly explains the relaxed, jam session feel of the recordings. Unfortunately, the songs come out sounding sluggish and stilted at times; this is partly due, no doubt, to the makeshift nature of the date, but also, more surprisingly, because of drummer Gus Johnson’s overly slick and formalized playing. On top of this, one has to contend with Dixon’s less-then-inspired vocals — it’s Dixon’s writing talents and A&R savvy in the blues world that warrant him a place in the pantheon, not his skills at the microphone. That all said, this still is an enjoyable disc to listen to, not least of all because of the quality of Dixon’s many originals and the freshness of pianist Memphis Slim’s playing. And while the vaudevillian comedy of a song like “Built for Comfort” can be traced to Dixon’s earlier pop R&B work with the Big Three Trio, rougher blues standouts like “Go Easy” and “Move Me” lead back to the Chicago blues world Dixon shared with Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. Not a first disc for curious listeners, but certainly a pleasant enough addition to the blues lover’s collection. ― Allmusic

Although Billy Joel never was a critic’s favorite, the pianist emerged as one of the most popular singer/songwriters of the latter half of the ’70s. Joel’s music consistently demonstrates an affection for Beatlesque hooks and a flair for Tin Pan Alley and Broadway melodies. His fusion of two distinct eras made him a superstar in the late ’70s and ’80s, as he racked an impressive string of multi-platinum albums and hit singles.

Born in the Bronx, Joel was raised in the Long Island suburb of Hicksville, where he learned to play piano as a child. As he approached his adolescence, Joel started to rebel, joining teenage street gangs and boxing as welterweight. He fought a total of 22 fights as a teenager, and during one of the fights, he broke his nose. For the early years of his adolescence, he divided his time between studying piano and fighting. Upon seeing the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, Joel decided to pursue a full-time musical career and set about finding a local Long Island band to join. Eventually, he found the Echoes, a group that specialized in British Invasion covers. The Echoes became a popular New York attraction, convincing him to quit high school to become a professional musician.

While still a member of the Echoes, Joel began playing recording sessions in 1965, when he was just 16 years old. Joel played piano on several recordings George “Shadow” Morton produced — including the Shangri-Las’ “Leader of the Pack” — as well as several records released through Kama Sutra Productions. During this time, the Echoes started to play numerous late-night shows. ― Allmusic
